Let me be the first to wish you and your family a happy, healthy new year. I don' t know about you, but I can' t wait for 2008 to get started. It will be a year of exciting changes for athletics at the University of South Carolina and Gamecock Nation.
Most importantly, 2008 will be the year we begin to change our culture and our destiny. It will be the year we settle for nothing less than battling for championships in all sports. And, the year we ask more of ourselves, our coaches and our student-athletes.
We had many successes in 2007: Fifty-one Gamecock student-athletes made the SEC Honor Roll- more than any other school in the conference. Twelve of our programs reached postseason play. Over 200 of our student-athletes provided thousands of hours of cumulative community service across the Midlands. Our football program received national coverage, including five televised games on ESPN. But it's not nearly enough.
No one will forget the excitement of a 6-1 record, a #6 ranking, and being discussed in the national conversation. And no one will forget the terrible disappointment of a five game losing streak and staying home for the holidays. We don't ever want to be home for New Year's again.
We can and will expect to contend for SEC championships and top bowl games in football each year. We will expect both our men' s and women' s basketball programs to be in the NCAA tournament every year. And we will expect to send our baseball team to the NCAA tournament. The same goes for all of our other sports.
We have realized some of these goals before, and we will set our sights even higher this year. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing with you the vision for the future of athletics at the University of South Carolina and the plan to succeed. Together, we will make the next generation of Gamecock Athletics something special to experience.

Happy New Year!
The Game is On !

Reads to me like a cheerful "get the job done now, or your butt's out of here" message to our coaches in all sports, especially basketball. It was also sort of a dressing down of the football program, imo. The words he used in the letter were what I expect a coach would hear in a personal performance review, imo.

I have no problem with what he's saying, I just don't care what he says, I care what he does.

The timing of this email makes a statement in itself. It's not just the AD wanting to wish us a happy new year. While we're all at home watching the rest of our conference play bowl games, he's tossing out a lifeline.

Whatever. Just get the job done Eric.

Pardon the joke, but in Hyman's letter, it says he expects the men's and women's basketball team to play in the NCAA tournament each year. If this is how he feels then can you explain to me why both our men's and women's coaches are still here when they have proven that they cannot meet these expectations. Until he takes actions on these expectations I will continue to disregard letters and statements he makes similar to these.

Spurrier from Florida ... and Odom ... well ... nobody cares ... the man is a damn Gamecock ... this is his job ... he's going to blow smoke up everybodies asses ... because that'll hurt his jobs in the future ... i'll stand side by side with the man

what will PSLs mean for us?

who in the sec has PSLs?

vegasmark
01-02-2008, 10:49 AM
In addition to GC Club dues, you'll have to pay $200-300 per seat for the right to buy tickets for a particular seat. According to those inside the GC Club, some current ticket holders control up to 24 seats each. If they have to start paying for the right to buy each seat at $2-300 a pop, they'll release some of those. In Hyman's mind, that's the only solution to bring in new money because you have hundreds of new donors that can't get prime seating because it is controlled by long time, though less prolific givers.

They may be coming, but I havn't seen any official word on teh matter. Just speculation.

On the same note, we really already pay a kind of PSL. The Gamecock dues are like buying a seat license (or the right to buy tickets).

I think the change we will see will be priority seating based on seat price. Better seats = higher higher cost tickets.

Which is fine in my book. Grandma doesn't need to be close to the field unless she is ready to unleash some unholy hell upon the nearest opposing player.

With all due respect, your speculation is incorrect. Ticket prices will remain the same.

True - there is no official release out about this yet - but if you call the GC Club, they will tell you the plan.

Then why in the hell did he give Odom an extension last year when it was obvious that team was not going to be anywhere close to the dance?? Hyman is a freakin' fund raising politician.. Worst argument EVER!

Hawaii also proved they didn't belong in that bowl game. They play similar high school teams with similar high school facilities. Good for them for beating up on the sisters of the poor (school for the blind) all season long.

They went up against a powerhouse program that has it all (including facilities) and they got destroyed. And now they wont be back to a bcs bowl game for a loooooong time (no matter the ammount of victories).

The fact is we have better facilities than Mizzou, Kansas, Hawaii, and several other schools....they played in bowl games...we didn't. I think that was his point.

The facts are:
#1 we can afford to have better facilities that what we currently have
#2 Forget the SEC for a second- we can't afford to let Clemson be ahead of us in the facilities arm race. In case you haven't noticed, they are. They already have the learning center\players lounge. The already have upgraded their baseball and track facilities. They have already given their football stadium a facelift and I am not talking about their west endzone project. They upgraded all their concessions and restroom facilities 3 or 4 years ago. They added brick facades inside the stadium and brick\iron fencing around it. We did build the new basketball arena, but they renovated theirs since then.
#3 some of us believe our athletes deserve the best facilities we can provide- the same way our fans demand the best out of our athletes and coaches (or else rank them out on messageboards)

BTW Mizzou, Kansas, Hawaii don't play in the SEC. They don't have to get up for big games every single week. Their conferences aren't 6-2 in bowl games. Their conferences don't lead the nation in attendance since forever. Their conference don't lead the nation in fundraising. They have an easier road to bowl games- we aren't playing in the pee wee leagues.

and hire who with what $?

i think thats been the big problem with our Ath Dept right? lack of funds, operating in the red, etc ...

i hate it that our Basketball team has sucked lately, but i cant say that i would rather have fired Odom only to hire some cheap coach that doesnt get the job done ... at that point what would we do? fire him and keep going through the cycle?

and we have made strides in the facilities war IMO - recently built a new BBall arena. Baseball is getting theirs now. and the ball is rolling with WB expansion and rennovation. All of this stuff just isnt going to pop up over night.

i will be extremely excited when we buy the farmers market. we could do so much with that land. go cocks

jstrom
01-03-2008, 10:33 PM
As always, seems too many want to be negative and only negative. Some appear to have their own agenda (fire this guy or that one). What I understand is that people want the negative approach to this memo applied to whoever it is they don't like or don't want at Carolina anymore. IF they applied their nonsense to the entire athletic staff at Carolina though? What about all the other coaches on staff...across the board? Maybe, if applied, there wouldn't be a single coach in any sport, men's or women's left in the capitol.

No, our fans are sick and tired of losers who believe that shoveling more money towards programs that fail on the field of play will solve the problem. Running in the black is no acccomplishment without success in the W column. Maybe Hyman ran TCU in the black, big F'ing deal. When was the last time TCU was mentioned in regards to Championship programs? He plays the flute, you align yourself and follow.

You ever think about the main reason for having athletics in college? W's and L's are a major part of the equation, but not the be all and end all. That's just from a "fan's" perspective.
