Three things to watch
The Gamecocks go into SEC play as banged up as they have been all season. Senior forward Lakesha Tolliver did not make the trip and will her second game in a row due to illness. Jordan Jones left Sunday’s victory against Savannah State with a bone bruise on her right knee, but did travel and is probable.
The Gamecocks have won three in a row against Alabama and seven of the past nine. USC won 95-35 last year in Columbia. Alabama averages only 55.9 points a game against a schedule that included only one team from a BCS conference.
The two teams have a common opponent in Alabama A&M. The Gamecocks won 88-41 at home while the Crimson Tide squeak out a five-point victory, 62-57.
Key player
Brionna Dickerson, G, USC
With the loss of Tolliver, USC is down to three players that have SEC experience. Dickerson might have to shoulder some of the point guard duties depending on the availability of Jordan Jones, but the Gamecocks need her to score as well.

Injury bug hits at bad time USC without Tolliver, while leading scorer is game-time decision before SEC opener

By CHRIS DEARING - Special to The State http://www.thestate.com/gamecocks/story/280352.html

At the end of Sunday afternoon’s postgame press conference, Susan Walvius stated, “the first season is over.”
She was referring to the non-conference portion of the South Carolina schedule, now that the Gamecocks open SEC play at Alabama tonight. And any hopes of post-season action will either be achieved or whisked away over the next several weeks.
And unluckily for the Gamecocks, it comes as they are nursing several injuries.
Freshman guard Jordan Jones, the team’s leading scorer, was thought to be out with a bone bruise on her right knee, but word came Wednesday that she could travel and will be a game-time decision.
Lakesha Tolliver, meanwhile, missed Sunday’s game and played limited minutes in the game before that with an undisclosed illness that forced her to be hospitalized. A timetable for her return will be evaluated later this week.
“It’s a whole new focus with starting the SEC schedule, and unfortunately we’re struggling to get healthy,” Walvius said. “Some of our younger players are getting more comfortable in their roles and this is an opportunity for them to embrace the chance to play.”
Not only are the Gamecocks battling the injury bug, they are probably the youngest team in the SEC. With Tolliver out for an undisclosed amount of time, only three players have extensive playing time in SEC games.
Demtress Adams, a junior forward from Lee Central who averages 12.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, said she, Ilona Burgrova and Brionna Dickerson have tried to prepare the seven freshmen and one junior college transfer for what they can expect.
“The most important thing for the underclassmen to do now is trust the coaches and listen to what we, as upperclassmen, are trying to tell them,” Adams said. “The timing is bad for the injuries and stuff but we have to overcome and have players step up like they have the last several games. There is no playing scored just because we’re in the SEC.”
Walvius has tried to prepare her team for the SEC by playing No. 1 Connecticut and No. 8 Oklahoma on the road as well as games against Penn State, Illinois, Virginia and Clemson.
“In general, most people outside of our league don’t understand how tough it is to play this type of competition every night,” Walvius said. “The hardest part for us is getting into the post season because once we’re there we’ve already played against some of the best teams in the country. So far this team has embraced this journey and it’s getting ready to step up a notch.”

this game will be a blowout.

carolina has put themselves in their best position to make the NCAA in quite some time.

I look for Carolina to be 12-4 (1-0) as they face off against the Volunteers this Sunday.

It took just 40 minutes for the 2007-08 edition of the Alabama women's basketball team to erase a 19-game SEC losing streak that stretched over two seasons.

TUSCALOOSA | It took just 40 minutes for the 2007-08 edition of the Alabama women’s basketball team to erase a 19-game SEC losing streak that stretched over two seasons.

It took 40 minutes for Alabama to even its record at 8-8.

It took 40 minutes to say, for at least one night, the Crimson Tide sat atop the SEC standings at a perfect 1-0 conference record.

In an inspired effort, Alabama outplayed, outhustled and outshot the South Carolina Gamecocks to earn a 65-54 win Thursday night in Coleman Coliseum in a game that wasn’t as close as the score appeared.

“How happy can you be for, and proud of a basketball team that has been through so much adversity this season?” coach Stephany Smith said. “I love how we persevered and the focus and the fight and our preparation, our attention to detail while we preparing the past couple of days.

“There are not enough words to describe how happy I am for this basketball team.”

Alabama’s last SEC win came Feb. 12, 2006 in a 51-49 win at Mississippi State.

Sparked by 17 points from its bench, including a career-high for sophomore Tamara Williams, Alabama never trailed South Carolina and was only tied once.

The Crimson Tide shot a season high 55 percent from the field in the first half only to better that mark with 56.5 percent in the second half. T

he Gamecocks were held to 36.4 shooting going 20 of 55.

Camilla Blands scored a game-high 14 points and Talisha Chandler found her shot from outside connecting on 5 of 6 shots. She scored 13 points and passed out four assists.

But it was the play of Williams off the bench that allowed Smith to give much-needed rest to guards Dedrea Magee and Caitlin Hollifield, who Smith converted to guard after injuries left the Tide thin at the position.

Williams had a four-minute stretch where she scored nine of her 10 second half points.

She started the run with a jumper and a layup. She followed up with two assists and a 3-pointer before another layup gave the Crimson Tide a 10-point lead at 48-38.

Alabama held a 26-9 lead with 8:42 remaining in the first half, but nine Crimson Tide turnovers had the Gamecocks trailing by just eight at the half 29-21.

South Carolina shrunk the Alabama lead to three on two occasions before Williams’ scoring outburst.

Smith said Williams’ four-minute span gave the team “great energy.”

Hollifield, who moved to guard in the previous game against Southeastern Louisiana, has helped direct the offense and given the team valuable minutes at the guard position after the team lost guards Katie Hancock, Alyson Butler and Nikki Davis before the season began.

Smith said Hollifield’s stats may not stand out, she scored eight points in 25 minutes before fouling out, but her return after missing nine games has given the team a boost.

“I’m going to tell you, getting Hollifield back is huge for our confidence,” Smith said. “She is playing a position right now she has never played in her life.”

Alabama’s leading scorer, Tierney Jenkins, was bottled up by South Carolina’s duo of 6-6 center Ilona Burgova and 6-4 forward Demetress Adams. Jenkins scored six points.

Alabama held South Carolina’s leading scorer, Jordan Jones to nine points. Burgova was tops for the Gamecocks with 13 points and Adams added 10.

Alabama (8-8, 1-0) will travel to Gainesville on Sunday to take on Florida at 1 p.m. The Crimson Tide return to Coleman Coliseum on Jan. 17 to host Arkansas.

Disappointing loss I hope we can get over it and get back on track again.

Devastating. I had been going over the schedule figuring out ways we could get to 7-7 in the SEC. I figured 7-7 would get us in the NCAA tournament. I always penciled in the Alabama game as a win.
