Spartanburg names Woodruff’s Brown new football coach

Freddie Brown was named the football coach at Spartanburg High School on Wednesday afternoon at a news conference.
Brown, who has coached for two years at Woodruff High School following his time as an assistant coach at Wofford College, takes the job after Doc Davis stepped down following a 2-9 campaign in the fall.

While at Woodruff Brown’s teams posted back-to-back 9-3 records and lost in the second round of the playoffs each year.

The Wolverines, who utilized a balanced attack during Brown’s tenure, were the Region II-2A champions in 2006.

Brown played football and was the student body president at Charlotte’s Independence High School and went on to play football at Wofford College.

He served six years in the U.S. Army and then joined Wofford’s coaching staff in 1999. He coached running backs there.

He is married to the former Alveta Jenkins, a Woodruff alum. The couple has two sons: Freddie III, a football player at South Carolina, and Treylen, who’s in elementary school.

I went to Wofford with Freddie. Freddie is very bright and has a good football mind. The inexperience should not bother you. Freddie's teams have won whether as a player or a coach. This is a very good hire for Spartanburg

I met with him last spring along with our head coach to learn some of his Off. system. As far as years of experience yes, but he knows his stuff and has lots of energy, he also demands hard work and commitment from his players. He is a hard worker and has great passion for the game. He is disciplined and has great organization to what he does. You will be surprised the job he will do at Spart.

Congrads Coach Brown - Go show them what you can do!!
"Watchout Dorman!"

Sounds like a good hire for SHS. Hopefully he'll reinvigoriate that program.

What's that all-time record? Has dorman even won 10 yet?

I went to Woodruff, and boy we sure would still like to have him. Excellent coach. All the football players are very upset says my little sister. Word on the Street is Woodruff is looking at Doc Davis, Spartan High's old coach they basically forced into retirement.

yeah, Spartan High dominates Dorman in football and basketball. When was the last time Dorman beat Spartan High in basketball? Thats a dang good question cause I have no idea.

(haha)

My how the times have changed...I lettered 3 years in varsity football for the Vikings (1 under Bill Carr and 2 under Ellis Johnson), I don't know what it is like to lose to Dorman. Never even considered the possibility when I played. The tide has turned in that one though. Spartan High isn't what she used to be...

And, ftr, SHS lost a lot of support with this whole Doc Davis fiasco. Doc was a wide receivers and tennis coach when I was there. He is a fine person. I cannot imagine a scenario where he would screw things up. I do know the facts involved in this case, and Doc was right in making the stand he made.

I wish Freddie Brown well, mainly because of the fact that his son is a Gamecock, but my loyalties to SHS have pretty much left with Doc.

(Funny note...When I was a little wormy sophmore (Coach Carr's nickname for me back in the day), I can remember our little Sunday afternoon meeting before the Dorman game. He told us how Dorman had only won one game in the past 18 years (I believe that number is correct, but it is close if not correct). He said that Dorman put on every page in their annual that they had beat Spartanburg and then listed the score. I thought that he was blowing smoke up our backsides. Then he pulled out a copy of that annual, opened it up to various pages, and pointed this out. He then laid the book on the table in front of him and dared us to find a page in which the score wasn't listed. No one took him up on the offer, but, it did let me know that we couldn't lose to them while I was there...and fortunately, we didn't.)
