COLUMBIA -- A who's who of the sports medicine community, including renowned surgeon James Andrews and former major-league pitcher Tommy John will take part in a three-day seminar that begins Friday and will focus on youth baseball injuries and their prevention.

One of the highlights of the seminar at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center will be a panel discussion Saturday that will include Andrews and John, who was the first to have the career-saving elbow surgery three decades ago that now carries his name.

"It's exciting," USC team physician Jeff Guy said Wednesday. "We've got lots of experts coming in." Nearly 200 people have signed up to attend the panel discussion, including one local recreational league that is sending all of its coaches.

"They made it mandatory," Guy said.

The miniseminar will include a review of proper and improper throwing mechanics as well as prevention of common injuries, Guy said. Also, those attending the panel discussion will be able to ask the experts questions.
"It's geared toward overuse and prevention," Guy said. "There's a lots of parts of the (overall) seminar that (focus on) this is what happened, they got hurt, let's fix it. The key is how do you get my office not to be filled with 13- or 14-year-olds complaining about elbow and shoulder pain."

Guy said when he was growing up youngsters, played baseball, football and basketball during that sport's season. Today, he said, that isn't the case, which has led to overuse injuries. "It's a hot topic, how we're seeing injuries we used to see in 18-, 19-, 20-year-olds we're now seeing in 14- and 15-year-olds. The whole concept of overuse is really becoming kind of a national epidemic."
