Ipod help

Alright so i just got an ipod for christmas and don't know much about them so i could use some help. Sometimes it'll just freeze up and theres nothing i can do to unfreeze it so i have to let it sit and wait for the battery to die then its fine. Is there anything else i can do?

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.my ipod seems to lock up on the beach. im guessing due to the heat
