Jenkins Leads Four Eagles In Double Figures With A Game-High 20

WU CREW 81 CHARLESTOWN 64
N. CHARLESTON, SC--Michael Jenkins scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures and the Winthrop Eagles defeated Charleston Southern 81-64 Monday night for their fifth straight win.
With the victory, Winthrop improves to 5-1 in the conference and 14-7 overall while CSU drops to 1-5 and 7-14 overall.
Joining Jenkins in double figures were Charles Corbin with 13, Chris Gaynor, 12, and Justin Burton, 10. Shelton Carter led the Buccaneers with 16 while Jamarco Warren added 13.
Winthrop shot 53.6 percent in the game (30-56) and the defense held CSU to 40 percent (20-49). The point spread could have been much greater had the Eagles shot better from the free throw line. Winthrop continued to struggle from the charity stripe going 13 of 29.
After falling behind 5-2 in the first three minutes, Jenkins put Winthrop on top 6-5 with 15:53 left in the first period and the Eagles never trailed again. The Bucs did manage to knot the score at 23-23 with on a 3-pointer by Warren with 8:06 on the clock, but a tip-in by George Valentine off a miss by Andy Buechert gave Winthrop the lead for good. Two free throws by Jenkins with eight seconds left put the Eagles up 37-29 at intermission.
CSU continued to battle in the second half and cut the Winthrop lead to just three at 42-39 with 15:47 remaining after Carter drilled one of his four second half 3-pointers. Burton then answered with back-to-back treys of his own and pushed the lead back to nine at 48-39 with 15:02 left in the game.
Winthrop extended the lead to as many as 19 with just under two minutes left on a long 3-pointer by Gaynor.
Winthrop will now prepare for its next game on Saturday when the Eagles travel to UNC Asheville for a first place showdown. The Bulldogs hold a one-game lead over Winthrop in the battle for first place. Tip off will be at 4:30.

Maximvs, whats up buddy? How bout them eagles? It has been kinda tough seeing us losing games. I saw the other day that UNCA is predicted to win the Big South and be a 13 seed. But now that they lost another one I have hope. I really hope we go dancing this year. I am going to Homecoming and hopefully the Big South Championship game. I can't wait to for Homecoming. I haven't been to a game since last years Championship.

ROCK HILL, SC – Michael Jenkins scored a season-high 28 points and Chris Gaynor added 16 as Winthrop shook off a sluggish start and defeated Radford 74-59 in a Big South Conference match up at the Winthrop Coliseum. With the win and coupled with a loss by UNC Asheville to VMI, the Eagles move one-half game ahead of UNCA into first place in the league standings.

Winthrop (17-9, 8-3) found itself in a 12-0 hole after the first media timeout as the Eagles missed their first seven shots and committed three turnovers. Radford8-17, 3-7) took the early lead behind the inside scoring of Joey Lynch-Flohr who scored six of the points and Amir Johnson who connected on two 3-pointers.

Jenkins ended Winthrop’s drought with 14:46 left in the first half, hitting the first of his five 3-pointers. The Eagles would keep chipping away, going on an 8-4 run in the last 3:22 to take a 30-26 lead at the break.

Winthrop increased the lead to as many as 15-point lead with 7:20 left in the game, but the Highlanders battled back, twice getting to within seven in the final two minutes.

Jenkins’ points came on 9-of-16 shooting – 5-of-10 from behind the arc. He also hit 5-of-6 free throws and pulled down six rebounds, helping Winthrop to a 44-36 advantage on the boards. In addition to his 16 points, Gaynor handed out six assists, and made three steals. Johnson led Radford with 21 points while Lynch-Flohr scored 15 before fouling out.

Winthrop will return to action on Feb. 20 when they travel to VMI for a 7 p.m. game. Radford will host UNC Asheville on Feb. 20.
