COLUMBIA -- Don't be surprised if University of South Carolina coach Dave Odom starts using his timeouts more liberally -- as he did 50 seconds into Saturday's 78-70 loss at Kentucky.

When his team is struggling, Odom said he likes to see it work its way through "that little period" of trouble when a foe makes a run.

"I don't think a coach can bail a team out of every situation. I think the team has to do that. As you get older, you should be able to do that. Our team has not," Odom said.
"We haven't been able to do that. so I probably need to step in and give them some help at that time and get them back to structure. My preference is not to do that. I think you grow more when you do it on your own."

But he said Tuesday that "maybe I ought to call a timeout (and say), 'Look guys, we're on top. This is what we're going to do. Don't worry."

A must-win? -- Forward Dominique Archie was asked whether tonight's game with Georgia was a must-win given USC has lost four of its first five SEC games and is 0-2 at home in league games already.

"Every game is a must-win," he said. "I guess you could say this one is. It's a big game. We've lost two close games, and we just need to get back in our heads we can win."

Five straight -- Georgia is seeking its fifth straight win over USC. The Bulldogs haven't won five in a row against an SEC foe since beating Ole Miss five times from 2000 to 2004. And the last time Georgia managed that against USC was from 1958 to 1960 when the Gamecocks were in the ACC.

Series sweep -- The team that has won the first game between USC and Georgia has also swept the regular-season series in each of the five years, with Georgia winning the last two years as well as 2002-03. USC swept the series in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

He's better off calling timeouts before teams go on runs at the end of each half..

Nice to know that's he's finally seen what fans and media have been saying for 7 years now. The coach has to help slow down those end of half and end of game collapses, either with strategic timeouts or change in personnel. Nothing much he can do about our size and inability to cause fowls. Devan is right. He shouldn't have to play 40 minutes AND take a beating to get a break.

Well, I understand the point of not bailing the team out of bad situations, but I always thought that Timeouts were exactly for that---to hopefully stop situations that are in the process of spiraling out of control. Coach O knows this---come on!!!!
