COLUMBIA -- Demetress Adams broke the school record with 26 rebounds and pumped in a game-high 18 points to lead South Carolina to a 59-50 win over Arkansas on Sunday in women's college basketball.
It was the first Southeastern Conference win of the season for the Gamecocks (12-10 overall, 1-6 SEC).
Adams broke Spartanburg native Denise Nanney's record of 24 rebounds against Anderson in 1975.
Brionna Dickerson added 15 points and Jordan Jones had 10 for South Carolina.
The Lady Razorbacks (17-5, 2-5) lost for the fifth time in the last six games.
"I thought tonight (Demetress) put the team on her back," USC coach Susan Walvius said. "To watch her rebound the basketball the way that she did and defend like she did tonight, 26 rebounds is incredible. . . ."
"It's frustrating not winning an SEC game (until today) because we have been working hard," said Adams, who said she was surprised by her total.
"I just went to the boards and did what my team needed me to do."

26 rebounds? What the hell! That's great!
Is that something that's more common in women's basketball? I feel like if Dominique Archie got 26 rebounds he would break NCAA records.

Basketball | Adams shatters school rebounds record in win
Junior records 26 boards to go with 18 points to lead USC against Arkansas
By CHRIS DEARING - Special to The State http://www.thestate.com/gamecocks/story/306567.html
At Sunday’s pregame shoot around, Demetress Adams listened to her teammates and decided that enough was enough.
The junior called the squad together and delivered a speech that she claimed had been a while in the making.
Then she went out and delivered at the Colonial Center. The Bishopville native shattered the school record with 26 rebounds and added 18 points as South Carolina snapped a six-game losing streak with a 59-50 victory against Arkansas.
“With everything we’ve been through, doing everything that the coaches have asked, it’s almost like what else can we do, what are we missing,” Adams said. “It’s frustrating not winning an SEC game because we’ve been working hard. It was just time to step up and say something.”
The victory could give the Gamecocks (12-10, 1-6) a shot of confidence going into the second half of the SEC schedule. The Gamecocks are healthy, and coach Susan Walvius said she believes the team can still earn a tournament berth.
“I don’t think our goals have ever been out of focus,” Walvius said. “I think this was a big win because it finally got that monkey off our team’s back. We’ve got Lakesha (Tolliver) back, and I like our big lineup. We’ve had some success with that this season and one player can really make a difference.”
It might not have taken a big-lineup for the Gamecocks to win the battle of the boards. The Razorbacks (17-5, 2-5) didn’t have a starter taller than 6-feet. After the season-ending injury to All-SEC performer Lauren Ervin, they have one player on the roster taller than 6-1.
Adams’ 26 rebounds erased the 33-year school record of 24 set by Denise Nanney in 1975. Adams had 10 rebounds at the half and continually found ways to get to the glass in the second half. Adams finished with nine offensive rebounds and 17 defensive boards.
Arkansas coach Tom Collen said Adams’ performance was attributable to his team’s size disadvantage
“Our greatest weakness is one of the few South Carolina strengths,” Collen said. “When they put together those three big kids, they are tough to handle. It’s tough when you box everyone out and they still have 6-4 Adams going over our 5-7 guards to get the rebounds.”
Adams’ 26 boards matched Arkansas’ team total. However, USC needed every one of those rebounds to overcome 25 turnovers. They ended with a 16-5 advantage on second-chance points and 30-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Walvius said getting the ball inside is almost always the plan, but it was a bigger focus against the undersized Razorbacks.
“It’s a no-brainer really,” Walvius said. “We’ve got to find a way to pass the ball inside even if that means passing it around the perimeter before we attack the defense. I thought we did a decent job of that.”
Now the bigger key is if they can do that the next seven games.

Nice win ladies! If they'd cut down the turnovers they'd be a much better team. 25 is too many. Maybe now that their players are back they can win a few more. Go cocks!
