USC fourth in composite baseball rankings

Arizona State is a consensus No. 1 selection and rival Arizona is No. 2 for the upcoming baseball season according to a compilation of five major college baseball preseason polls.
The University of South Carolina shares fourth in the rankings with Rice.
Clemson is No. 19.
Polls from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Rivals.com and USA Today Weekly were included in the compilation.
A team received 25 points for a first-place vote, with the scale dropping to 1 point for a 25th-place vote.
Arizona State (49-15 in 2007) was ranked first in three points, third in another and ninth in the fifth for 115 of a possible 125 voting points. Arizona (42-17) was selected first in one poll and had 109 points in the composite rankings. North Carolina was third with 107 points, with USC (46-20) and Rice (56-14) tied for fourth with 99 points.
The Gamecocks were ranked as high as No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball and as low as No. 12 by Baseball America. USC opens its season against East Carolina Feb. 22 at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia.
Clemson, with 36 voting points, was included in four of the rankings. The Tigers’ high was 13th in Collegiate Baseball. Coach Jack Leggett’s team was not included in the Rivals.com rankings.
Clemson (41-23 last season) also opens its schedule at home Feb. 22, facing Mercer.
The final five of the composite top 10 are Vanderbilt, Mississippi, San Diego, Texas and Miami. Other ACC and SEC teams making the consensus top 25 are Florida State (tied for 16th with Long Beach State), No. 20 Virginia and No. 24 Mississippi State.
UCLA, which received the other No. 1 designation, was 11th in the composite poll, followed by two-time defending national champion Oregon State.
