AGGIES LOSE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Texas A&M defensive coordinator Reggie Herring is leaving the Aggies to become the linebackers coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Morning News is reporting.

The Cowboys assistant position will be Herring's fourth different job in the last four months; he was previously defensive coordinator at Arkansas and then interim head coach at Arkansas for the Cotton Bowl. After the Cotton Bowl, new Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman named Herring his defensive coordinator.

And now Herring is gone after a month.

That Herring can leave the Aggies in a lurch like this is a good example of why schools should insist on putting buyout clauses in their assistant coaches' contracts. Now Sherman will have to start his defensive coordinator search from scratch because an assistant he thought had given him a commitment has bailed for a better offer. If Herring is going to walk out on the Aggies, the Aggies ought to get some compensation.

Of course, it's entirely possible that Sherman will fill the void left by Herring's departure by encouraging an assistant from another school to do the same thing. That's life in the coaching business.

I honestly don't think we have a worry in the world... I predict EJ will be here until he retires or gets fired.

At least he waited until after Signing Day.

Great observation CoverTwo...that was my first thought in reading this. Who all else would we have gotten if BVG had done this? I don't care that he is gone, but he could have helped us out on his way out. Reggie Herring, the former clemson a$$wipe, again manages to do something better than we have done... (we need an emoticon that bangs his head against the wall...I thought that we had one...perhaps I am just too pissed right now to find it...)

I guess I have to become a Reggie Herring fan now. It's always good to get a former DC as a position coach, IMO. Even better if you can get a former head coach as a position coach (Ron Cooper). I just don't see how we can keep Ron. He's one of the best position coaches in football (not just NCAA, but NFL, high school, the whole shabang). I don't think he's fit to be a DC, but I could be wrong. I know someone will give him a chance to be a DC, but I hope it's not soon. Let's pay him like a DC to be a DB coach!

COLLEGE STATION — While speaking to a group of Texas A&M supporters in Houston on Thursday night, Reggie Herring passionately pointed to his heart and said that's where the “Wrecking Crew” nickname should dwell in players.

Herring's heart, however, wasn't with the Aggies — and the Herring era for A&M will be a forgetful one, indeed. Herring, A&M's defensive coordinator for about a month, has accepted an offer to become the Dallas Cowboys' linebackers coach, according to a source with the Cowboys.

A source with A&M said Herring interviewed with the Cowboys on Friday. Another A&M official said he could not comment on the matter late Friday night.

Herring was Arkansas' defensive coordinator the past three seasons and was the Razorbacks' interim head coach in their Cotton Bowl loss to Missouri.

Herring gave no indication of the move Thursday, when he spoke to the gathering in Houston about the priority of restoring the “Wrecking Crew” defense.

Coach Mike Sherman will have time to find a replacement, especially with Wednesday's national signing day behind the program.

The Cowboys recently have interviewed former NFL head coaches Gregg Williams and Dom Capers for defensive positions. But Herring's impending hire fills the Cowboys' final spot for a position coach.

Herring, 48, is a former Florida State standout at linebacker and has 25 years of coaching experience on the college level. He served as North Carolina State's defensive coordinator in 2004, and before that spent two seasons with the Houston Texans as linebackers coach.

The Wolfpack led the country in total defense during Herring's lone season there, allowing 221 yards per game. The Wolfpack defense ranked 89th nationally the previous season.

Arkansas ranked 44th nationally in total defense this past season (358 ypg) and 26th in 2006 (323 ypg). The Aggies, under former defensive coordinator Gary Darnell, ranked 84th in total defense this past season (416 ypg) and 44th in 2006 (323 ypg).
