did he live?
He is in stable condition. He had to have hour long surgery to reattach the artery that was severed. Looks like he should make it.

I've always wondered how more guys don't get sliced up when playing hockey. Their skates are so razor sharp and the slightest nick can slice you wide open.
Hopefully this guy will fully recover.

man that looks like a terrible injury judging by how much blood is there.

It cut his carotid artery and he almost bled to death. You can see it here...

it asn't completely severed otherwise he most likely would have died. it was 90% cut but it was still attached so it could not contract and then they would have had to try and locate the contracted artery before "plugging" the leak

I watched a Iraqi civil defense soldier die like that. Shrapnel cut hit carotid artery in half and he was bleeding like a stuck pig. Our corpsman tried his best to save him my trying to find it but his color faded in less than a minute and he was gone. It was very gruesome to watch. People dont realize just how much blood if flowing through your neck.

Yeah the goalie is Chris Malarchuk one of the greatest to ever play the position. He got his entire throat slashed cuz he fell on the skate. Malarchuk was a beast he lost like 6 teeth from taking a stick to the face, and spit them out and kept playing. The bad part is if you watch the video of Zednik you can see the blood leave his face as he skates to the bench. He nearly collapses when he gets to the door.

That was scary to watch, but He is going to be fine... the atery was severed, and hanging on by a thread, which was good news for the doctors, cause it gave him a higher chance to survive... the cut was 1 and a half inch deep and wide, and by the grace of God he was alert, responsive, and is still able to talk. AND no other arteries was touched... it was a freak accident, and I hope that the NHL will look into implimenting some sort of neck protection for there players... but most importantly, Richard Zednik is as well as possible, and is going to be alright. He wont be allowed to do the normal routine for about 6 to 8 weeks, but that pales in comparison, IM just glad he is alright. I believe that if he stayed on the ice, he wouldve died... thank God for adrinaline. lol

There are neck protectors but the players choose not to wear them. I wore one in high school

there are 3 angles and what happened to Malarchuck, a player was going in, and was about to fall, and somehow, his skate caught Malarchuks neck and sliced it pretty good. it hit his jagular and his carotid I believe, but hes fine as well, coaching with the Columbus Blue Jackets...

oh, I knew that, but you know how in NASCAR they made it a rule to wear the neck harnesses after Earnhardt died, they should do the same, but I guess, just like in nascar, they are going to have to wait until someone dies a violent and bloody death, on the ice, in front of 20,000 in attendence, and another 20,000 watching at home, for them (the players) to get serious about there health.

gotcha...it would be nice but i think the league will look at it like it doesnt happen very often so they dont need to come up with such a rule.
oh and im watching the Avs and Ducks...during the second intermission they showed a clip from the minnesota/edmonton game and one of the Oilers got knicked above the eye with a skate...

Did anyone catch the fact, besides me, that both of these instances involved the Buffalo Sabres? One injury to, Malarchuk playing for Buffalo, and the other to Zednik, while playing against Buffalo.........Weird coincidence.

yeah, and a ref somewhere else, i guess earlier in the season, got kicked in the face by accident... so the NHL will definately be making some changes soon... they have to.

ive actually heard with malarchuk that the trainer stuck his finger directly inside his neck to control bleeding as soon as he got out there, and that if the trainer had been on the other side of the court (court?...ice? i dont know hockey lingo...sorry haha) and had taken just a few seconds longer to get to him he could have died.

well apparently he's been released from the hospital... good for him. that was scary. i about crapped myself when i saw the highlights on tv. he seriously could have died from that.
it's a wonder you don't see that kind of thing more often in hockey.
