Really SNEEZ, is that so? If you feel that way, I'll bet these are some numbers that would surprise you. Jr has more career victories at 17 than two series champions (Kenseth 16, Kulwicki 5) and the same number as another champion (Busch). To this point in his career, he has only three less wins than his "surname" did through his first eight seasons. He has won on every track configuration on the circuit. Plate tracks 7 times (Daytona 2, Talladega 5). Short tracks 4 times (Richmond 3, Bristol). 1 mile high bank track once (Dover). 1 mile flat track twice (Phoenix 2). 1 1/2 mile high bank track twice (Texas, Atlanta). 1 1/2 mile flat track once (Chicagoland). All this while driving for what is generally considered the 5th best team in NASCAR behind Hendrick, Roush, Gibbs and Penske. All this while driving for an owner who rarely goes to the track or the shop and appears to be disinterested in winning races. Face the facts. The kid is one hell of a race car driver. You can dislike him all you want. That's fine. There are several drivers I'm not fond of too. It still doesn't change the facts. Dale Jr is the real deal. Take it to the bank!

I don't like or dislike any of them and I would venture a guess at saying I'm a bigger fan of jr than any b/c his dad was a REAL driver.

wins don't equate to being great. how many wins will be remembered in 20 years. none. CHAMPIONSHIPS MATTER
He's a lesser son of greater sires.

DALE 7
Jr 0

until he starts to win big, IMHO he's a bust

al this being said, I hope he does win b/c he's not as big a deuche as others, plus itd be sweeter than pissing in stepmommas coffee for him.

I guess that goes to show you. I think less of Gordon and Johnson now because it means anybody can win in a Hendrick car.

I understand what you mean and believe it or not, this post ^ goes in the direction I'm talking about. Dale Earnhardt Sr joined Richard Childress Racing for good in 1984. The previous three years, he only won 3 times while driving mediocre equipment (Sound familiar). Once joining forces with Childress, Earnhardt won 67 races and 6 Championships in the next 17 seasons. He also had three runner up points finishes and also a third while only falling out of the top ten in points once (1992). Interestingly, when Earnhardt Sr made the move to Childress, he was exact same age as Earnhardt Jr is now. The prime of both of their careers. That's why I say we will now see how good this kid really is. Now, I don't expect 7 titles like his dad won. However, if he spends the rest of his career at Hendrick, I'll be SHOCKED if he doesn't win at least one Championship and maybe even two or three. Especially if NASCAR ever does away with the ridiculas chase format thereby eliminating fluke titles like the one Kurt Busch won in 2004.

thats my beef with Jr. He hasn't done anything and he's uber-hyped more than anyone in the ultraverse of nascar.

for absolutely NO reason...yet. I think he'll be good worthy day but..i mean...damn.

that being said the little bastard better win sunday I've got 50000vcash riding on him, b/c the vbookie gang-robbed me an extra 45000 vcash!!!

I would give sneez a break for his opinion. I agree with him to an extent. If it was not for his name, he would not be where he is today. I like Jr., but I believe his name is the only reason he is where he is. NASCAR and the Earnhardt fans of old needed someone to carry the banner. I like Jr. because he does not try to be his dad. It is unfair to compare Kulwicki and Jr. Kulwicki did what he did with half the budget the big teams of that day had. He had the opportunity to drive for many of the big teams but chose to do it himself and did it. I think Jr. realizes DEI is not where it was 5 years ago and who can blame him for getting an opportunity and taking with the best team in NASCAR. If he doesn't win a championship with Hendrick, it will never happen. I do think he has a good shot at it though.

Earnhardt Sr. did when a championship before 84 also. He won it in the #2 car with Ron Osterland. So he has 1 championship in mediocre equipment. The next 4 years or so will show how good Jr. is. I think he wins 1 championship with Hendrik.

Scranton Tiger

^ Thats why I said six Championships with Childress. Also, the Osterland team was anything but mediocre before he sold it midway through the 81 season. It was one of the top teams in NASCAR in an era when only 8 or 9 cars had a realistic shot at victory every week. As a matter of fact, that team even won a race in 79 with a substitute driver after Earnhardt was hurt in a wreck. David Pearson won at Darlington in the #2 car that year.

As for Junior, he worked his ass off to get where he is. As a resident of Myrtle Beach where Junior drove for a few seasons I can tell you that his father didn't give him anything. He has less than stellar equipment to say the least. Dale Sr wanted to see if Junior not only was serious about racing, but also if he "had what it took". Dale Sr, one of the best if not the best ever, thought he could drive and Rick Hendrick the unquestioned top car owner in the sport right now thinks he is a great driver. You'll forgive me if I take their word over the posters who say Junior was "given" everything. JMO

Sr. made Jr. work for what he has today. Give him credit for doing it the way he did for Jr. He did not give him a thing. I know Osterland was not a mediecore team until it was sold to J.D. Stacey and Earnhardt left shortly after that To drive for Childress the first time around and then two years in the Bud Moore ford. Racing was a different animal then and for much of the 90's. Now it seems like anyone young gets a good ride from the start. Back when I loved racing 80's to late 90's, you had to cut your teeth in subpar equipment for years, before getting a good ride. For me personally, I do not watch racing much anymore. I will watch it this year some just to see Jr, hopefully win a championship. I do believe however, that if was not for Jr. being an Earnhardt, he would not have the fan base he does. Earnhardt is NASCAR and will always be. IMO the Earnhardt name is why the fans love him, more so because his dad got killed. I like the guy, don't get me worng, but if his last name was Smith or Jones, no one would care if he drove for Hendrick.

I don't hate Jr. but I agree with Sneez that he is way overrated at this point in his career. I have never met him, but people I know that do know him say he is a genuine, down to earth guy, not a snob or jerk despite all of the attention he receives. I don't think he has shown he has the driving talent of Stewart, Gordon or Kyle Busch. Rick Hendrick got him as a driver for the marketability of his name, which was a genius of a move. Now if he can win a championship with Hendrick, they both make boat loads more money. I personally don't think he will win a championship, but I've been wrong before.

i don't think he is overrated... overexposed, definitely, but that's different than overrated. he's a good driver, but even the biggest dej fans will probably tell you he hasn't proven he belongs in the top echelon of drivers at this point.

You people saying that Jr is overrated and NOT a good driver are NUTS!! The kid dominated the Busch circuit long before ever even dreaming of racing with the big boys. If you remember correctly, there was a lot of talk for a long time about Jr's Dad bringing him up to the big show but Sr. wouldn't do it b/c he wanted to make sure Jr was the real deal. He was, and still is the real deal.

My problem with all this talk is that Jr haters are going to say one of two things now that he's with Hendrick: either "he couldn't get it done with DEI so therefore he sucks" or "Hendrick's cars are so good anyone can win in them so he sucks." If the latter statement is the case then how come Casey Mears hasn't won jack sh*t yet? That is flawed logic my friends.

If you think for one second that Jr doesn't have as much if not more talent than everyone in that Sprint Cup garage then you don't know SH*T about racing. Jr has been winning since he was old enough to get behind the wheel and now that he has the equipment to match he will be a force to be reckoned with. Bank on it.

Yes it's true Jr picked up many of his father's fans. However, he also picked up most of his father's haters as well.

I know as a kid growing up, I was not an Earnhardt fan, mainly becuae my Dad was a Ford fan. I do remember pulling for him in Moore's ford. I did not like Earnhardt at all in the late 80's early 90's. But I guess as a true fan I began to realize how much he was NASCAR and started liking him. I think more people like Jr. now, than liked Sr. I like the guy because he is so down to earth and doesn't seem to think his stuff doesn't stink. I think me and you could have some good conversations about nascar. You seem to very knowledgeable about the sport. I agree that some people don't like him because of his last name. Now will show how good he really is. If the first two races are any indications, he is off to a great start.

Yea, I'm a Huge NASCAR fan. Probably a little too much. 1/24 Die-cast and old races on DVD are like crack to me. I have been a fan since the mid eighties after seeing my first race in person. I became an Earnhardt fan because he won the race that day, which ironically was a Busch race, driving the #8 GM Goodwrench Pontiac. Wrangler was still on his Cup car then. Terry Labonte went on to win the Cup race that weekend in the #44 Peidmont Airlines car. If you have not seen it already, there is a web site you might enjoy called http://www.racing-reference.info/. It has just about any stat you can think of from every race in NASCAR history. It covers Cup, Busch, Truck, All-Star and Exhibition races.

I think he also picked up most of his fans from just his "southern" look. Plus, having a beer as a sponsor also helps.

My dad was a huge fan of Dale Sr. and just kind of jumped on the Jr. bandwagon.
