U.S. says Bonds failed steroid test in November 2001
Reuters
SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=3918) tested positive for steroids in November 2001, just a month after hitting his record 73rd home run of the season, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday. The allegation came in a legal filing in his steroid perjury case that referred to Bonds' long-time trainer, Greg Anderson. "At trial, the government's evidence will show that Bonds received steroids from Anderson in the period before the November 2001 positive drug test, and that evidence raises the inference that Anderson gave Bonds the steroids that caused him to test positive in November 2001," U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello wrote.
The U.S. government made the assertion in a document that asked a federal court to reject Bonds' motion last month to dismiss the charges that he lied about past steroid use. In December, the record seven-time National League Most Valuable Player pleaded not guilty to lying to a federal grand jury in 2003 when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. He testified in the BALCO sports steroid case, which ended up jailing his personal trainer, Anderson, and the head of the BALCO lab near San Francisco. The latest government motion also referred to a question by a prosecutor during the BALCO case to "determine why Bonds apparently tested positive for anabolic steroids in November 2000." To date, prosecutors have revealed little about the details they have in the case against Bonds, the greatest hitter of his era long dogged by suspicions about doping.

How did MLB...1) not know this...or...2) know and not say/do anything? To me, Bud Selig needs to be tried with all of these players...along with the players' Union headman Donald (scumbag) Furr. They both should be shown the door NOW....and face the same kind of indictments.

The more and more this is investigated, I think Selig and those others who knew should be ones tried, to hell with going after Bonds and Clemmons, go after Bud Selig this was his mess probably knowing him he told the players to keep their mouths shut.

It's already come out that the report was caused by a typo, at least to some extent. The actual failed test was a year earlier, and has already been reported before.

it was a fed's typo, they were referring to the 2000 failed test, he mistakenly wrote down 2001. though i'm not sure what difference it makes if he failed one, the other, or both, just as long as he failed one. but it is the same failed test we've known about for the longest

By Bob Nightengale (http://www.usatoday.com/community/tags/reporter.aspx?id=68) and A.J. Perez (http://www.usatoday.com/community/tags/reporter.aspx?id=1), USA TODAY
USA TODAY has confirmed that the document filed by the Department of Justice earlier Thursday contained a mistyped date. The updated story follows.
Barry Bonds tested positive for steroids in November 2000, less than a year before he broke baseball's season home run record, U.S. prosecutors charged Thursday.
The U.S. attorney's office in San Francisco charged in an indictment released in November 2007 that Bonds had tested positive for "anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances."
But Thursday's filing, in response to Bonds' request to dismiss the indictment against him, provided more specific detail about when Bonds' alleged positive test occurred.
Joshua Eaton, a spokesman for the Department of Justice, acknowledged an erroneous reference in Thursday's filing to a November 2001 failed drug test. He confirmed that the failed drug test was in November 2000.
"At trial, the government's evidence will show that Bonds received steroids from (Bonds' trainer Greg) Anderson in the period before the November 2001 (actually 2000) positive drug test," U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello wrote, "and that evidence raises the inference that Anderson gave Bonds the steroids that caused him to test positive in November 2001 (2000)."

Now, I specifically remember several people on this board, vehemently defending Bonds because he had "never tested positive for steroids"
So, go ahead....try and defend him now.
i don't think anyone doubts that he has taken something ... but until you posted this i didn't even know he had ever tested positive ... now i am NOT a fan of his

I've seen several people claim "innocent until proven guilty" since he had "never tested positive"

I defend bonds because I don't care if he has used some stuff before.
Everyone in the damn league is using the crap, so I don't think he needs to be made to look like some standout occurance.
Baseball just made a big deal of him because he was able to do it better then anyone else and break a few records.
Those clinging to the false ideal that baseball is pure except for a couple users are in a deeeeeeep state of denial. Bud covered it up when times were good, and turns on the stars when times get bad.
How that idiots still has a job still bothers me.

Some people cheat on their taxes, so I guess if I did as well, I could just use that same argument with the IRS...

So everyone else is doing it, so it's okay if Bonds does? That's the biggest pile of crap I've ever heard.
What's next....they went after Bonds because he was black?

Well, the difference there is that the IRS actually goes after people cheating on their taxes. If the IRS knew your were cheating, but turned a blind eye to it because they thought it would be good for business (like MLB), then you would have a comparable analogy.
So everyone else is doing it, so it's okay if Bonds does? That's the biggest pile of crap I've ever heard.

I didn't say it was ok, I just find it funny that most people think the resolution to the problem is catching bonds. Like putting him in jail will make everything gravy again. Point is, all of MLB is using. Making an example of this man, because he was (then) threatening to break cherrished records, is a crock. If you go after him, you have to go after everyone (which they are not).
If he used, he did. Who really cares?
He and others are paid to perform and entertain. Therefore, if he enhances both his performance and entertainment everyone is even getting more for their money!
Oh, it this is probably all just because he is black.

JAYBEZ: Bonds is going down for perjury, not for taking steroids.
Public perception is the way it is because hes an asshole, and he took steroids onto breaking one of American sports most revered records.
The courts are going after him for the perjury.
Why do people keep saying he is going to jail for taking steroids?
He isn't nor has a single person in sports the last few years
EVERYONE GOES TO JAIL FOR PERJURY

exactly...which is why i dont understand why he lied to the feds anyway?
its obvious now that he did, if he tested positive...so what- was he worried that if he admitted to taking steroids that people would think less of him than they already do?
Thats unlikely...
Perjury is hard to prove but I believe he is up against (or will be) 5 counts?
Have fun with that
They will plead out as most do

I don't really see how playing the race card matters here, but to each his own.
