View Full Version : Georgia Legislature Bans Some Out-Of-State School Plates
Clemson, Auburn and Florida grads, save your Gator and Tiger tags.
Because when time comes to replace them, the state of Georgia might not give you another one.
In a 142 to 10 vote Thursday, the Georgia House of Representatives passed legislation to stop making out-of-state university sports mascot car tags.
That is, unless the Legislatures in those states begin making Georgia plates for Bulldog Nation citizens living in diaspora in South Carolina, Alabama and Florida.http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2008/02/21/plates_0222.html
I find it ok to be honest
Waste of time? Sure
Allowable? Well, if other states don't allow their schools, why should they? I understand

I don't see anything wrong with Georgia's stand. We only do instate schools, but NC and VA both do plenty of out of state schools.
So, it's only fair.

Seems a little backwards... the state legislatures represent the citizens of Georgia, who more than likely register their cars in Georgia. They don't represent a UGA / GA Tech / etc... alum living in Tallahassee or Charleston. So, they have essentially legislated against the will of tax-paying Georgians (after all they must have a mimimum number of registrations before the school plates are cast) in order to appease the frustration of non-tax-paying non-Georgians. Thats a solid policy. Maybe we should ask them to lower out of state tuition next.

Put it this way, if some UGA fans in our state wanted a UGA logo on South Carolina's plate, would you want it? No
Would you want our legislators to allow it because some UGA fans are "their citizens"? No
The high, high majority of UGA/Tech people probably and obviously (judging by the ridiculously high "yes" votes) wanted it
I can see it....put us in their shoes

I was under the impression that the school tags got a part of the money that we pay for them in this state. Is that correct?

For the same reason that any state started doing this in the first place...
MONEY!!!
Oh come on guys, it was like $25 a person
That is chump change
If Georgia was getting a significant amount of money that was being used AND making a difference, we would have our own state doing the same thing.

Maybe they want that money staying in Georgia instead of going to other state's institutions of higher learning.

I could not agree more...you are 100% correct. Georgia legislators should be doing what makes georgians happy, not what makes people in SC (who happened to go to UGA) happy. It is BS...sure I hate seeing a clemson tag here in Tennessee, but hey, their alumni chapters petitioned the state and had one made. I have St. Jude plates on my cars here in Tennessee, but of the $35 extra per year I pay, only like $5 goes to ST Jude

If the school aint in your state I feel it is kinda stupid to put it on your tags...Its nothing but another way for the state goverment to make more money to spend on more B#@$$#t...and hell some people like Hawgy and Cack get mixed up easily with those tags....Damn...Hawgy says..I did not realize jawja univ was in South Carolina....

Lets get past the team aspect. I think Georgia has more important things to worry about. Two what if someone graduated from a college in another state. I don't care either way just giving another perspecitve.

I live in NC and have a Gamecock plate on both of our cars. You'd be surprised how many you see around town.
If you haven't seen one, this is what they look like in NC....

These raise A LOT of revenue for States, so I'm surprised to see GA take the stance they are. Can't say I blame them though.

I live in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. I am a alumn of The University of South Carolina. I have a University of South Carolina/North Carolina plate on my vehicle. Why in the hell would anybody in North Carolina be oppossed to that??? Oh, that's right. No one is.
I see all sorts of non-North Carolina plates around here. Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Boston College, etc. Obviously there are the UNC, NC State, Wake, Duke and East Carolina plates as well.
On a side note. Dare County, which is where I am, is the most educated county in all of North Carolina. The Outer Banks also has one of the best public school systems in the state of North Carolina.
Seriously, what is wrong with a UGA alumn having a UGA plate? Is South Carolina saying college educated individuals aren't welcome here unless it was a SC school? Who in the hell is offended by this? Why not pass a law that says you can't fly a college flag outside your home unless it is a SC school? Why not only let Gamecock and Tiger fans live in the state?
I am honestly at a complete loss as to who is oppossed to the concept of raising money through personalized plates or welcoming college educated people who support their school, the same way the locals do, into their community.
No wonder SC public schools are so poor. The people of South Carolina look at college in South Carolina only in football terms or only in rivalry terms and not in education is a good thing terms. Anyone who got a quality education somewhere else who wants to join a SC community is treated like the enemy. It is a good thing to have college educated people from other states, countries, cultures etc. living amongst you. Why would you be against their showing support for their team just because they choose to live in South Carolina?
Sorry for the rant but I just do not get this...at all.

I don't either hence why I agree with this bill. If other states want to make it ridiculously hard for one states schools to be on their plates, why should that original state do anything more for those restricting states?
If it were up to me, I would allow almost all schools on our plates IF they came up with a minimal amount of signatures/money.
The fact that Alabama/South Carolina bar it AND Florida makes it impossible is odd to me

Couldn't agree more. I wish South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida would open their doors to South Carolina license plates
Thus, I agree 100% with this bill that tells other states "If you don't open your doors to us, we won't do the same for you"
It isn't bullying AND maybe other states will get the point and one day allow this type of freedom
