Anyway, they state this little guy is a Cocker ... i was thinking english or springer ... anyway, hes a pup, but i wasnt sure if the cover credits were correct with "cocker"

I could be wrong but my sister always called her dog a boykin and it looked almost exactly like the pic..

but you are right boykin spaniels are suppost to be "solid liver color with a white mark on the chest if any" so im think my sister was wrong and she had a springer

Maybe they meant that it was Joe's dog.
Looks like a Springer to me though.

Springer for sure. Best dog I ever had was a Springer. Can't figure why you don't see too many now. They were extremely popular in the 80's. The Boykin is also an excellent dog, and they are solid chocolate brown. The only breed that originated in good ole SC.

i knew the boykin was our state dog, but never realized they came from good ole SC
good to know
i wish i would have never seen that coverdog ... i live in a very dog-friendly part of atl and dogs are everywhere ... i know i shouldnt get a dog, but damn if i dont want one! LOL
Im a huge dog lover and grew up a springer fan since we ahd a beautiful one. he was a part of the fam. but im also a big fan of weims (wiems?) ... and way - beautiful dogs but i hear they are too hyper and they have a tendancy to have GI problems (twisting of the stmach)

If you really want a Springer, PM me. I know a great litter, my dad got a puppy from the same parents a year or so back, and he is an incredible dog.

is the pup pictured an English springer? Is there another 'sub-set' of springers besides English?
My fam had one that was liver and white ... this guy looks black and white
You can have black and white and liver and white in the same litter. In fact, you can also have tri-colored springers (white, black, and liver) but you don't see those as often. Tri-colored springers are pretty highly sought after.

I really like the Welsh Springers. Plan to get a Boykin upon return to the
States. Y'all should check out the boykin spaniel rescue website.
BTW...I agree Garden and Gun is a great mag. I've been getting it since it came out. Good stuff.
