If you haven't see the video on Yahoo's home page of the passenger plane in Hamburg, Germany trying to land in heavy winds do yourself a favor and go check it out. Incredible!

I saw it on the news just a second ago. Think they said the Pilot was trying to land it in a tropical storm? I think that's what they said anyway.

That is what you get when you have Hog try and land your plane. You think by now his reputation would of preceded him.

As heavy as those planes are it's hard to imagine that thing could come in sideways like that. Also, why not divert the plane away from Hamburg if the weather's that bad?

155 MPH winds and the pilot tries to land???? What an idiot! The #1 rule of flying is don't land in a storm.

He was probably low on fuel being that the airport he was landing at was his final destination. The Air Force has landed B-52's in weather much worse than this over the years. I watched a video once where the entire B-52 was sideways and the landing gear was lined up with the runway and they still landed it.

Still, with civilians on board you'd think they'd try to come up with a different landing spot. Plus, these guys have the technology to know well in advance if they may face problems to tough to land in. It's amazing to watch. He almost bottoms out the wings twice!

That might of been the only place he could of landed. You never know how many planes they have stacked around at various places in the landing pattern waiting to set down. It all boils down to what the weather is like and how much fuel you have left. I am sure they weighed all their options before they attempted it. On a side note crosswind landings like this are not uncommon. It is just this one seemed to have the misfourtune of having extremely strong low level winds. I used to watch C-17's come into Khandihar air base almost completely sideways sometimes. You can check out more here.

Hmmm....so you just bring it in with your nose into the wind a little bit and at the last minute make the turn to straighten out. While it's common sense it doesn't take away the skill these guys have to have to make it work. Hats off to them!

Good point. This wasn't a freak windstorm. He knew about it long before he landed and should have considered landing elsewhere. I wonder if this clown still has a job today?

B-52 was sideways
The B-52s tandem landing gear allows them to line the gear up with the runway as you mentioned while the plane is coming in at an angle to compensate for crosswinds. I remember watching that when I was a kid the one time we were stationed at a SAC base.
