The 10 best cars in America. Not surprising: only one is a US brand. Surprising: two are Hyundais.

You couldn't give me a Hyundai. I don't care if the warranty was 200,000 miles.

I dunno, I keep reading that Hyundai has really stepped their game up in the past 5 years or so...and they back it up with the warranties as well. Let's face it, American motor companies are far behind when it comes to manufacturing cars along with the technology and design put into them. I can't think of one single American vehicle that LOOKS the best in its class nor one that could be considered a BETTER vehicle in its class.

When it comes to car design, the Japanese have been light years ahead of America. Compare Honda car models starting in the 1990s. It looks like we were still building for the 1970s and 80s.

A friend of mine's mom owns a Hyundai Santa Fe and loves it. She has had it about 3 years and it runs great, low on gas, roomy inside for how it looks on the outside, has neat features, and the warranty and price couldn't be beat. Low maintenance as well she said.

^^ The worst thing about a Hyundia is their re-sell value. You'd be crazy to buy one new since it drops drastically in value the day you drive it off the lot. Sure, all new cars do, but not like the Hyundia.

Hyundai has come a long way. They made some utter crap for a long time, but from everything I've read they've stepped it up big time. Truthfully, they'd probably have been better off coming out with a new "brand" than trying to salvage their previous poor reputation.

Have you seen the new Hyundai Genesis that they advertised during the Super Bowl? They benchmarked the BMW 5-series for the past 5 years and think they've developed a comparable platform.

368 hp V8
0-60 in less than six seconds

53/47 front-to-rear weight distribution
Hyundai says the car's body structure is 12 to 14 percent stiffer than a BMW 5-Series or Mercedes E-Class. Despite this, the unibody is lighter than that of either the 5er or E.

High-tech equipment includes: electronic stability control, XM NavTraffic, adaptive headlights, radar-based active cruise control, a 500-watt 17-speaker Lexicon audio system, and electronic active head restraints.

A leather-wrapped dash, door panels, and console lid surround the driver, while heated and cooled seats provide added comfort. The steering wheel is wrapped in engineered ultraviolet reflective leather to remain cool to the touch in extreme sunlight.

Genesis has a total of 8 ultrasonic sensors located on the front and rear bumpers.to help park in tight spaces. The car also offers a power rear sunshade, automatic electronic parking brake, proximity key and push button starter.

The car's eight airbags include dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags.

All that for around $30k, if people can get over the Hyundai badge, they may have a winner.

I trust consumer reports. I have a Toyota Camry. The MPG is the best part w/ gas prices where they are and all, and it rides smooth and haven't had any mechanical problems with it. When it comes to cars, I have no loyalty to any brand or where it comes from, as long as it's reliable and I can afford to gas it up...period.

Pretty interesting. It looks a lot like a Mercedes to me. The V8 puts out 375 horsepower. That's pretty impressive. If after the first year the reports are as good as the intial reports this car could really shake things up. People are looking for deals these days. That may be a winner for these guys.

There are many of the "experts" suggesting now that Hyundai's are getting better and are becoming just as reliable as the big car companies.

you read reports from "gurus"
I trust myself and the people who actually KNOW HOW CARS WORK and see these damn things day in and out.
lol

trust me, they are nowhere near as trustworthy as a GMC, and try to get a crucial part...1to 3 weeks before you can get it.

Uh I do not know who you have been talking to buy Hyundai's from say three years ago and today are totally different cars. The ones made today are every bit as good as a Japanese or American car. I work on vehicles all the time and have never had a problem getting any part for a Hyundai. Back in the Datsun(Nissan) and Toyota were total POS's when they came out but they kept on getting better as the years went on. The same thing is now happening with many Korean made cars such as KIA, Hyundai and Daewoo. All of these cars have come a really long way in the quality dept to become good reliable vehicles. All of that being said I still only buy American and would not own one unless they setup a plant to manufactor them here in the US. I put a new water pump on a KIA the other day that had 284k miles on it and that was the first replacement part it had ever had other than spark plugs, oil filter etc.

Until about six years ago I always had GM vehicles. Family employee discounts were just too good to pass up and I can't ever really remember having any horrible experiences with GM cars. But then my wife decided she wanted a new SUV.

She test drove ALL of them LOL.....I told her I thought the Honda Pilot would be the best, but she liked the Hyundai. I told her, "No way...not going to waste our money on a Hyundai. I'd rather go expensive and get something super nice." So I told her to go and drive the Lexus again...and the BMW again. She did...said she still insisted she liked the Hyundai best.

I did a little research and determined that many of the "experts" were giving the Hyundai vehicles good marks on initial quality....so I did what any man would do and let her get the Hyundai.

Since then, I've bought only Hyundai (2 SUV's and 1 Car).......have yet to have a single problem with any of them.

This is not the first time Hyundai has put cars in at the top of the heap....I think JD Power's overall brand quality of 2007 had Hyundai ranked third behind only Ferrari and Lexus.....yes better quality than Toyota and Honda.

I don't work at a mechanic shop, so it could be that I've just been lucky....but it seems to stretch the logic a bit if you then have to assume that JD Power, Edmunds, Consumer Reports, Car and Driver etc. all got lucky with them too. Much more likely that Hyundai actually makes a very good quality car right now.....I expect resell value to gradually change to reflect that improvement over time.

I also seem to remember reading somwhere about five years ago Hyundai hired Volvo's saftey engineering team....that would make sense because Hyundai's now seem to score pretty good on all the saftey tests.

^Good post! Every owner that I've asked said similar things and no, I don't own one.

It's not as much about American, but I would hate to buy a car that I can't really say where it is from.

I'm guessing, South Korea for Hyundai? Malaysia? Madagascar? Sri Lanka? I give up.

Because of how global economies are nowadays, cars really have no one country where they come from. They may be assembled in one country (sometimes) but in reality the components come from several countries. Buying American, or buying from any one country anymore is almost impossible.

Yeah, I have a client that is a Japanese owned company, but they operate here in Charlotte. They make parts for Japanese automobiles that are assembled in the U.S. I'm not getting any business from U.S. Automakers.
