View Full Version : Restaurants in Columbia

We're coming down Saturday morning for the Kenny Concert. We'll be getting in town around 12. What are some good places to eat in Columbia near Assembly and the Stadium? We are coming from Spartanburg. Nothing fast-food and nothing REALLY, REALLY fancy. Just something good, unique, and sorta quick.

Thanks

If you know where Five Points is, head down there. Yesterday's is a great restaurant. Also California Dreaming is a nice restaurant, on Greene Street.

Doc's Barbeque on shop Road. Less than a mile from the Stadium.
There are a couple of Deli's up on Rosewood. As well as a Lizard's Thicket just off Rosewood right behind the Technical College.

It'd probably be for us to eat kind of away from the stadium to avoid traffic. I was thinking about Yesterday's or Damons.

Where exactly is Yesterdays? How do I get there and get back to the stadium?

Go to the Salty Nut Cafe. The food, waitresses, and atmosphere is all amazing. You will not be sorry

If you're coming from Spartanburg get on I-77 at Exit 16 (off 26). Go two exits past Bluff (Garner's Ferry Road) turn right on Garner's Ferry and go down about 1/2 mile. You'll come to a Wal-Mart shoping center. There's a Ruby Tuesdays there at the entrance to Wal-Mart and if you go through the Wal-Mart parking lot, there's a Ryan's on the other end.

Salty Nut is good. I also like Mr Friendly's right across the street. Its an updated "Southern" food place. Its not fancy/formal but a bit more than an applebee's, ruby tuesday, etc...

take 126 huger street
take a left on blossom
follow blossom till you see harden street
take a left at harden street (welcome to 5pts, haha)
yesterdays will be on your left, it'll be the building with a street on the other side and the man in the tub on the roof.

and you will be set.

You'll be waiting a while, but, I also recommend California Dreaming.

If you have time to ride over to the Harbison area (Irmo).......I would also recommend Carraba's. (they have call ahead reservations.....just off the Harbison Blvd. exit on I-26)

Salty Nut sounds like what you're looking for. They have the biggest deck and saltiest nuts in 5 Points.

In the Vista...maybe 5 Guys? Best burgers & fries I've had in awhile. Liberty in the Vista is good. Damon's sucks in the Vista.

Don't go for the places that won't be packed automatically...California Dreaming (which is probably too much for what you want).

Overall, I'd say Salty Nut is your best bet. They have good food, chill and relaxed scene, have an outside deck, and the waitresses are pretty hot. They also have peanuts you can eat and toss on the floor. If you like chicken salad, get the Grilled Chicken Salad Sandwhich!

Rockaways my boy, Rockaways...

Yesterday's is good, but not great.
Salty Nut is very good.

For my money it's either Rockaways (you'll thank me later if you go there) or Salty Nut (waitresses make up for a lot, they're all a bunch of sorostitutes)

I was going to say Rockaways but he'd never find that place. Pimento Cheesburger FTW! Yesterday's isn't really that great...bout the same as a Lizard's Thicket except with an atmosphere. The food is average at best.

Oh man, I went to Rockaway's after the Spring game...

had the jalapeno burger and thought it was great...only problem is, we had the worst service that I've had in YEARS...

I mean this girl was absolutely pathetic...could never seem to flag her down, there werent that many people in the restaurant, she couldnt remember half of what we asked for...it was pitiful.

the food was awesome, but the service will more than likely prevent me from going back.

trust ColaCock on this one. it isn't like the pimento cheese sandwiches you scraped from the container and put on bread. it is GOOD. not a sweet pimento, just real good.

pimento cheeseburger, pimento cheese tots. do it. you'll need a friend to share.

I have a new word to use. Maybe it was worth the 2 minutes reading the rest of this thread. Same mediocre or worse restaurants that have been in Columbis for decades. Rockaways being the exception.

If I asked for restaurant advise and someone sent me to Grouchos or Andy's Deli I would hunt them down and torture them.

Two of the most overrated, overpriced places to eat in Columbia...Andy's being the worst of the two. The portions at Andy's are so small it only pisses you off after eating...the bags of chips- I swear I opened them one time and counted 7 chips in the bag. Also, they nuke the hot sandwiches in the microwave so the bread is kinda chewy when it comes out. Rip off, I will not eat there.

i will agree, over priced, but so is everywhere you go to eat.

however, honestly, i get halfway through my astronaut at andy's and i'm stuffed. and i like my bread chewy, i dont want stiff bread.

i don't want stiff bread either...but i don't want it chewy. i want it normal...fresh. you can walk across the street to Sammi's and get more food for less money and it taste better...the composition of the sandwiches at Andy's is ridiculously primitive. for example, the astronaut: bread, cheese, meat, thousand island (or whatever) sauce---done, that will be 7.50 please and don't forget your bag of chips my friend!

andy is NOT my friend. i need to make a shirt that says that...kidding.

but really, i compare the pricing to what you get and there is just way too much around it IMO to make a smart decision to eat there. but if it floats your boat, go for it!

As of last night, we decided on Yesterdays. But some of these post actually changed my mind. I don't even know what kind of food Yesterdays has. Just sounded good and I know a lot of people like it.

I am leaning torwards Salty Nut. What kind of place is it? I mean I am going to have my mom with me so I don't want to be "that kind" of place if you know what I mean. What kind of food do they have?

Also, Directions. To Salty nut, and from there to stadium!?!?!

Yesterdays is like Lizards Thicket but with an atmosphere...best way to explain. You can get vegetables and your meats...chicken fried steak...roast beef...etc etc. It is pretty much a "tourist spot" in Columbia, if you will. It was on MTV's Road Rules at once. I've ate there quite a bit, but not by choice each time after the first. Good sweet tea though...but...

Sweet tea even better at Salty Nut. Salty Nut is a laid back kind of place with a deck wrapping around it. Ever been to Salty Dog Cafe in HH? Kinda like that. Food is served in baskets and they have everything from salads...to wraps...to burgers...to chicken/cheesteak philly. The tots are REALLY good there and so is the honey mustard. They have peanuts that you can eat and throw on the floor. Way hotter waitresses at Salty Nut as well...plus individual TVs at the booths.

Salty Nut is on Greene Street (the road that runs through campus in front of Russell House). You can hook a left on Greene Street from Assembly and it will eventually be on right once you pass campus. OR you can take a left onto Gervais (from Huger or Assembly) then go down until you get to Harden St (take a right, this street splits 5 Pts) and then hook another right on Greene Street. It is on the left.

ColaCock
04-23-2008, 04:19 PM
To Salty nut, and from there to stadium!?!?!

When you leave Salty Nut, your best option is to go down Greene towards Harden and hook a right. Then go down and hook a right onto Blossom...take that all the way to Assembly and hook a left and you'll be on your way to Willy B.

Or you could use GoogleMaps.
