UNC's Head Womens Coach who previously coached at Francis Marion and was by passed for the USC job when Nancy Wilson was hired.I'd be surprised if she left UNC at this stage of her career.

Yeah, I agree with an above post. Hyman's probably doing the same thing he did with Horn and asking a coach her opinion and going from there. I think this is a better approach. Its much more focused on the game than the politics.

She has wanted the job in the past. Nothing wrong with inquiring about her interest. But it is doubtful. I'm afraid that ship may have sailed when we didn't give her the job 20 something years ago.

Its women's college basketball. I don't think it is possible to have a "big name coach" in that sport.

She comes down to Francis Marion all the time. She got her first coaching shot there and she won two Div II national titles at FMU. She is a very nice lady and I have talked with her several times before but I just can not get over her huge ears. I have to always try to concentrate not to stair at them.

She's a winner! The powers-that-be were to stupid to hire her in the past. Hopefully, they will get it right this time.

And who are they? Not really making a point. Seriously, everyone has heard of Summit but damn she had to win like 50 national championships for us to know her name. By the way, those images of her in a cheerleading outfit ruined my fetish for cheerleaders.

All Hyman should say is, hey I wasn't here when USC turned you down. I'm here now and I want you. I'm a fellow unc grad, so I wouldn't lead you wrong. What do you think? Wanna join us?

hey, maybe Hyman being a turdheel might help out after all. Hatchell would be a HUGE get for us....then again, Hyman could just be consulting with her about possible candidates as well.

UT's women's coach started out as a Volunteer. You could say she has reached the Summit of her career. You could probably even say she has that coaching thing down Pat.

Hatchell is 56; I think we would ideally rather have a younger coach even though she has been very successful. I'd like to look at Jenn Rizzotti.

I totally agree with you. We need to do what we didn't do with Hatchell and hire the young energetic coach from Francis Marion Heather Macy. I am telling you I have meet this women and she has a passion for the game like no one else I have seen. She is young and I think she would really do us a great job!

99% of America can't name a womans coach not named Summit or Auriemma
I never heard of Stringer or Yow until you mentioned them. Of course, I now know stringer from the nappy-hoes comments but until you said rutgers, I wouldnt have known that if you hadnt told me she was rutgers womans coach

This morning on the local sports talk radio our local guy "the bad boy" said that he was very good friends with Sylvia's best friend and he said that Hyman talked with her and she basically told him that for her to leave we would have to pay her $1 million a year. He said that she was pissed that she only makes $260k a year at UNC and other top name coaches like Summit at TN make over $1 million. I think this actually might be a ploy by her to get UNC to step up and actually pay her the money but you never know. They kept on asking on the radio if Gamecock fans would be alright with paying the womens basketball coach more than the mens (Horn makes $870k a year).

I would be right now. Maybe once we have a program on the elite status then we could pay her over a mil, but not at this time. We could double or triple her salary though.

If you knew anything about womens basketball, I guess you would know...Sylvia Hatchell is the coach at UNC, she is a pretty good coach...Gail Goestenkors took Duke to the National Title a couple of years ago..she is a Texas now...she is a pretty good coach...and Auriemma...well hes an asshole, but hes done his share of great things at UConn...but...nevertheless...he is an ass...

It could probably be said that with the exception of UT, those other school's women's teams have ridden the coat tails of thier men's programs. No way should our women's coach make over a million because it would be really hard to argue that Hatchell's success could be repeated at USC.

Everyone up here in Norfolk keeps talking about USC going after ODU's women's coach it's been on ESPN radio like 5 or 6 times in the past 3 months up here on the local sports show, even made the tides game the other night during the small talk when the game was getting boring.
Here is there site if you care.

I'm a big basketball fan, especially college basketball. That means that, whether I like it or not I also know alot about womens college BBall as well as the NBA.
I certainly do know who Hatchell is and I would be more than excited to get her, but it would take alot to woo her away, especially at this point in her career. I think Hyman might go after a similar type of coach to Coach Horn.
That being said I do know who Geno Auriama (sp?), Kay Yow, Pat Summit, Sylvia Hatchell etc are. And I would be very uncomfortable paying a new womens coach that much more than a new mens coach. Now, if she had been here since the dawn of time and won consistently (like Summit) then it might be a differrent story.
But I think it is incorrect to assume that these women are riding the coat tails of their men counterparts. As far as the men: UCONN has not always been good, actually they used to be terrible before Jim Calhoun got there. Also, Kay Yow has enjoyed marked success above the Mens' team at NCSU. LSU did go to the final four in men a few years ago, but their womens team has been there something like every year in the past 5 years, even with three different coaches.
Just to reiterate, I do think it would be silly to pay a new womens coach any more than a new mens coach, simply because mens BBall makes a ton more money than does womens.

Tar Heels look to keep Hatchell
With USC’s interest now known, UNC is trying to rework her contract
By JACK DALY - The Durham Herald-Sun
With South Carolina looking at Sylvia Hatchell for its vacancy, North Carolina’s athletics director said the Tar Heels are committed to keeping Hatchell as their women’s basketball coach. “She’s done a tremendous job of leading this program,” Dick Baddour said. “I hope that she’ll continue to do that.”
Hatchell met with South Carolina officials late last week at Hatchell’s beach house in North Myrtle Beach, Hatchell’s agent, Jeff Meadows, confirmed. “Where it goes from here, I can’t say,” Meadows said.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if she stayed. I do think she is genuinely interested in USC, especially if we offer her a raise. But it would be tough to overcome 22 years of service.
I think she is Hyman's first choice, but if not her then I think he will look to a young up and coming coach, much like Coach Horn.

I think Hyman is probably using her to get advice on good up-and-coming womens coaches, and she's using him to get her contract re-worked. It's good that we're getting advice from someone so well-respected in the game, and she obviously has more insight into the prospective hires than Hyman (or nearly anyone else) would.
It's a mutually beneficial situation, but I agree with many of you that we don't really stand much chance of pulling her away from UNC. Only if UNC's AD puts together an insulting, easily beatable offer will we have a shot.
