Hyman's list of targest includes Temple's Staley

Three-time Olympic gold medalist is winningest coach in Owls history

By JOSEPH PERSON - jperson@thestate.com (jperson@thestate.com)

Temple coach Dawn Staley talked to South Carolina this week and is interested in the Gamecocks’ head coaching vacancy.

Staley, who has taken her hometown Owls to the NCAA tournament in six of her eight seasons, spoke by phone with a USC athletics official but has not had an in-person interview, according to an industry source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

No doubt Staley would be a home run hire, but she won't come cheap. "Staley, who turns 38 this weekend, signed a six-year contract extension with Temple last year that made her one of the 20 highest-paid women’s coaches in the country, according to the source. Staley has a guaranteed annual package of roughly $400,000 and a sizable buyout, the source said."

Wasn't Staley in the original WNBA commercial where Lisa Leslie, Cheryl Swoops, and Staley went to the pick up courts - "We got next"?

I hope we get her!

With UNC deal in works for Hatchell, focus is on Staley

Tar Heels coach will get raise, while top Owl already has a rich contract

While one candidate for South Carolina’s women’s basketball vacancy pulled out of the running, discussions with another candidate intensified.
Sylvia Hatchell, North Carolina’s Hall of Fame coach, withdrew from consideration for the USC job Thursday with the promise of a revised contract from her athletics director — the scenario most observers predicted when the 56-year-old Hatchell’s name first surfaced in connection with the Gamecocks last week.

Meanwhile, USC’s search for Susan Walvius’ successor appears to have turned to Temple coach Dawn Staley. The former Virginia and WNBA star was in Columbia this week to interview with USC officials, according to two sources close to the situation. A possible stumbling block with Staley could be money.

so she make $400,000 a year, twice as much as Susan did and she also has a big buyout from what this article says ... so what are we willing to pay a head coach in the womens league anyway? gonna have to more than match that one ...

I don't imagine Hyman would instigate an interview with Staley if we didn't plan on ponying up.

gogamecocks.com says that the TN women's assistant is #2 on our list. I'd say she'd be my #1. She should come cheaper being an assistant, and you can sell her a chance to break into the head coaching ranks in the SEC where she can coach against her mentor, Pat Summit, and create her own legacy here at USC.

^ I'd rather have a young up-and-comer with head coaching experience, who's won, than a Guthridge-esque assistant who couldn't land a head position already after 27 years. In addition, Staley is one of a select few involved in women's basketball who has a high-profile name. This alone would exponentially help the Gamecocks.

Go get Staley!!

Holly Warlick went for a second interview Friday with South Carolina about its women’s basketball head coaching vacancy.
This time the trip went all the way to the school campus in Columbia, S.C. The Tennessee Lady Vols associate head coach was flown there Friday morning to speak with school officials and toured the facilities before returning in the afternoon.
Warlick interviewed with a school official at an off-campus location last Friday. http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2008/may/02/warlick-has-second-interview-south-carolina/

If you go to the Temple website at Scout they have an insider article talking about the fact that Temple women's basketball coach Dawn Staley is the highest paid athletic employee at Temple at $400,000. I guess this just shows how a lot of schools up north view football. http://temple.scout.com/

Temple doesn't have the fan base that we do. Their average attendance for football is about what ours is for men's basketball. Our largest crowd for women's basketball happens to be the largest regular season total outside of Knoxville. While our women don't draw well on a regular basis, they do have the potential to draw well when they're good. They have in the past.

USC seeks cash to hire Staley

Sources say Hyman wants to go beyond planned budget for high-profile coach

By JOSEPH PERSON - jperson@thestate.com (jperson@thestate.com)

South Carolina is trying to come up with a financial package to lure Temple coach Dawn Staley to Columbia. USC athletics director Eric Hyman has spoken with university officials about spending more money on the next women’s coach, according to multiple sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Gamecocks likely will need the extra resources to land Staley, who is among the country’s 20 highest-paid coaches with an annual guaranteed deal worth about $400,000, according to an industry source. Staley’s contract also includes a sizable buyout, the source said. Former USC coach Susan Walvius, who resigned last month following an 11-season tenure, made about $200,000 a year, plus incentives.

We screw Ray Tanner on the baseball stadium and we give the boot to some old time GC members because we are broke yet we want to pay really big bucks for a non revenue sport coach? This makes no sense to me.

how did we screw tanner on the stadium?
was it the granite they found, or the bitch-fest the local neighbors threw because of construction noise?

How did Ray Tanner get screwed on the baseball stadium? Second if somehow he was screwed over by the University while having a new stadium built in his honor (regardless of the typical construction delays that can happen on a project this big and this costly being built in the always difficult to work with city of Columbia SC. All with-in a realistic budget) then how does that relate to the University's womens basketball program?

Do you believe women's sports at USC are a waste of money?

My young daughter and potential future Gamecock thanks you for your continued and future support...sorry, just making a point.

I have no problem with any opinion on this matter. However, I will say this. Hyman, Sorenson and the Board at USC are responsible for and concerned with ALL of it's student/athletes. Male and Female. I believe they all should have the best available coaching, facilities and academic support in the SEC.

This would be a great hire and could do wonders for our program...even if some fans don't care...and even if it doesn't turn an immediate profit.

Its only non-revenue because teams fail to make the investment in it. Women's sports continually gain popularity. If we can compete with a big name coach, (i.e. one who was honored with carrying the Flag into the Olympics and makes continuous NCAA appearances) we will get more people interested. And, I am pretty sure the men's team is still non revenue, still paying off the colonial center, and next year baseball will be in the red as well. You want to be big, you have to spend big. I want our school to compete on all levels, not just the Men's big three.

Ultimately we built one of the most expensive baseball stadiums ever built no doubt the bureaucracy caused it to take way to long. Ray Tanner has the patience of Job and has been very understanding of it all to a fault.

Reality is there are only two revenue sports at most schools mens football and mens basketball. Womens basketball was the only womens sport I ever attended while at USC. I guess I will be ok with them wanting to make Dawn Staley the face of womens sports at USC even if it is a loser. I would hope Hyman might give her a similar contract to the one he gave to Darrin Horn one that includes some type of attendance bonus. I would hope maybe we can get attendance up to at least 5,000 fans. I would bet most fans are like me in that like me the main womens sport they ever attended or ever watched maybe on TV was womens basketball. Dawn Staley would be a huge asset to USC. Sports sometimes has a residual effect in attracting students to attend a university and who knows she might attract women to USC.

Maybe if the women's basketball team won, it would generate more interest...Just a thought...
I think Ray Tanner is pretty happy about his new stadium...
For the poor GC members that can not afford tickets, its unfortunate, but there is a price to winning...Besides winning, athletic and academic facilities are always a huge thing with recruits...I would think that in the long run, most people would rather pay more $ to watch a team win...

The baseball stadium lost the Victory Tower supposedly due to lack of funds. My question is, "Was Hyman lying when he said we were broke or is he lying now when he says we have all of this extra cash to throw?"

i read the latest development to mean hes trying to FIND the extra cash to throw...

so, technically...both could be true. lack of funds for the victory tower...and now, he sees a REAL need for extra money so hes trying to find where to get it from (cause it aint in the original budget)

According to both the Gamecock Anthem and Temple Scout sites Dawn Staley has been hired as our coach, if this so welcome aboard Coach Staley. This would be a home run hire as she would be the face of womens sports at USC.

The eight-year coaching era of Dawn Staley at Temple University is apparently almost over. She's close to signing a contract to coach the women's basketball team at the University of South Carolina.
A high-ranking Temple athletic department official said this morning that Staley's departure is likely to happen.

Best of luck to her, a fews things of note, Tanner's stadium is a year off schedule, that is how I think most people believe he got hosed. And 2. that is a lot of money to spend on a sport that cant support itself, however, having 2 daughters myself I am interested to see how things turn out. I am interested to see if USC fans will support her past the middle of the season.

My question is, isnt she the first African American coach that USC has hired in the one of the "big four" ie football, baseball, men's or women's basketball? If so that is a big step that alot of people have been calling for at USC so that shoudl make a vocal group happy. On paper she looks like a good hire for the program hopefully she will pan out.
