There was an article in USA Today not to long ago about this kind of stuff as well.
In Mich, the Det area, the reorged an entire conference because of gas. The article highlighted the Cath HS league of Mont. The AD for the league said that there had schools that had to travel over 400+ miles to play each other.
but to answer your question I have no idea about SC cause I am in Tidewater VA. But I just wanted to type cause I was bored.

SEC should be reorg.
-Ark and should go to the Big 12 and change the name and add Houston to make it the big 14
-UK should join Big Ten to make it the Big 12...b/c there's already 11 teams...idiots.
UNC and Mizzou should join the SEC

Problem is that Mizzou is not considered a southern or eastern state.

It is affecting GA as well. I would suspect some schools may drop less popular sports or maybe the chess club or debating club?
Gas prices have Georgia schools rethinking sports travel
Cobb spent $450K on transport in '07-'08, expects 20-25% cost hike this year

Published on: 07/01/08 http://www.ajc.com/highschool/content/sports/highschool/stories/2008/07/01/gascosts_0702.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab With diesel fuel prices 34 percent higher than they averaged in 2007-08, the state of Mississippi has cut high schools sports schedules by 10 percent. The state of Tennessee is radically changing its league structure to limit cross-state travel.
In Georgia, there is currently no plan to address rising fuel prices that could cost each high school thousands of dollars more in the upcoming academic year. However, officials want ideas to cope with the issue.
"Do we have to do something drastic? If we don't, I'm not sure we'll be out there traveling," said Earl Etheridge, chairman of the Georgia High School Association's reclassification and football committees. "Gasoline's getting to be a tough situation. It's the responsibility of schools to do their fair share to decrease the number of trips we have."

Mizzou is further away than Arkansas anyway.

Sure makes a lot of sense to move the State Football Championships to Clemson...
It'd be nice if the legislators and Clemson subsidize the cost for all the lowcountry schools and fans, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Did they move the championships there or something? Or do you want them to?

Bowden and some Clemson alums pitched a fit because they thought having the games at W-B gave us a recruiting advantage, so they pressured the high school league to move them to Clemson next year.
Never mind the fact that Columbia is the center of the state and has the hotels/restaurants/ease of travel that clemson lacks.

Schools cutting bus service because of fuel prices Updated 12h 58m http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-07-09-schoolbuses_N.htm ago | http://i.usatoday.net/news/_photos/2008/07/08/schoolbusx.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:;) http://i.usatoday.net/_common/_images/clear.gif http://i.usatoday.net/_common/_images/_inside/enlarge.gif (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:;) Enlarge (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:;) By Paul J. By Gwen Purdom, USA TODAY
School administrators are spinning their wheels trying to cope with the soaring costs of fuel for school buses. The bottom line: More students will walk farther this fall.
"All the less drastic measures have pretty much been exploited," says Robin Leeds of the National School Transportation Association. "All that sort of easy-picking fruit has been picked."
Fuel costs are up 35%-40% since last year. Schools are making more students walk to school and axing buses for extracurricular activities, and more operate on four-day weeks:
• Garden City, Mich., schools have eliminated Saturday transportation for extracurricular activities. Last year, the district cut out daily buses for high school students, but after two weeks, the buses were back when parents expressed safety concern
I would bet some schools will go to maybe a four day school week with maybe longer hours because of gas prices.

C'mon man, I'm sure many Clemsun fans will be willing to lend out their barns to the teams for one night.

My kids' school in Atlanta just reorganized to a conference that has teams up to 90 miles away. Bad year to do that, I suppose.
What it does is make things more expensive, that's all.

We finally got in a region where we don't have to travel so far. Our farthest game is in Downtown Charleston so it's only 30-40 miles at most.
