University of South Carolina track team lends hand in Iowa
Perched on high ground, members of the track teams from Clemson University and the University of South Carolina here for the NCAA Outdoor Championships were safe from rising water in central Iowa, but Friday morning, members of the USC team helped prepare Des Moines for cresting flood water.
According to a report filed by USC sports information director Michelle Schmitt, athletes, coaches and staff reported to a local United Way center and received directions to a site where they filled sandbags for stacking along the river.
The Gamecocks volunteer team worked side-by-side with Des Moines residents to shovel sand into bags, tie the bags and help load them onto dump trucks.
