The Summerville football team will not play in the inaugural Texas High School Showcase presented by the National Football Foundation. The event will be held Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 at Texas Stadium, which is the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Summerville football coach and athletic director John McKissick said his school decided to honor its contract to play Conway at home that weekend.
The Showcase is organized by Intersport, which also helps produce the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, and the Under Armour All-Star Football game in Florida.

Well, it wasn't so much a case of Da' 'Ville honoring the contract as much as it was the hell Conway would raise if it wasn't.

A simple costs/benefits analysis proved the pay out didn't warrant the expense of taking a high school team 1200 mile away to play a football game.

I like this, It would cost schools more money to send the teams and not to mention the time missed in school, last I looked, grades are most important and no reason to drive half way across the country to play a game no one watches any way. That is no one but the teams fans who are playing. They need to stop all this going all over the country to play ball and actually learn to read and spell there names.

Of course as everyone knows, Summerville needs the TV exposure to aid in recruiting.

<------- Summerville grad.

I do know the recruiting thing is sour grapes by opponents. Yes, parents will move to Summerville to get their kid on John McKissick's squad. But then again thousands of parents want their kids in Dorchester School District 2 and it has nothing to do with football (that's why my parents moved from Berkeley County when I was in grade school.)

BUT

Yes, I know for a fact there are kids who are "red shirted." Usually they stay in the 8th Grade for an extra year. The most famous case for this was Perry Cuda. Perry was in the grade after me and didn't graduate for another two years after me. Plus, I'm not sure but he may have been held back (or failed) even earlier. By the time he was a Senior he was as old as some of the coaches.

Again, though, Coach McKissick doesn't coordinate or encourage that stuff. PARENTS make this decisions (a la Todd Marinovich.)

I don't care how Summerville does it... if Wando could get their football teams to be anywhere as good as Summerville is year in and year out, I'd be all for it. But no, the culture at Wando isn't good for winning football championships.. there's just too many primadonna rich kids that go to the school for that.
