Hills loses appeal for redshirt year.
Wide receiver Joe Hills is listed in the University of South Carolina as a freshman, but the Palmetto, Fla., native is actually a sophomore.
The reason?
The 6-foot-4, 202-pound Hills played in three games, not one as the media guide says, including against Mississippi State on Sept. 29, the fifth game of the season.
"If you play in the fifth game, they take your redshirt away. I thought I was ready to play, but I wasn't," Hills said. "I'll just take it and run with it."
USC appealed to the NCAA for a redshirt year for Hills, who said he found out about three weeks ago the appeal was denied.

too bad. but hey...just gotta make some noise while youre here.
And that is a good reason few true freshmen should be anxious to get on the field. Unless you are really good enough where the coaches want you out there as a real difference maker, you will seldom play and lose a year of competition.

Unfortunate but not the end of the world. Hopefully Joe have a great new few years and leave us wishing he had one more.

Stinks that he lost a year. But, all in all it was a pretty funny article.
WR is one position that we can stand to lose a year.

Kinda like Brian Maddox.... Really wanted to play, and probably should have redshirted...

May not factor in. Very possbile that the NCAA changes the rules where you have 5 to play 5 within the next couple of years or so I have heard ..... If that ends up being the case then we do not have to worry about it .....

Can't complain too much... after all, we got a slew of other WRs that played last year RSed, so losing a year of eligibility out of the entire crop isn't too bad. I do swear though I only remember seeing him in one game (MSU I believe) trying to catch a fade since he got hurt in fall practice. Oh well... it's not a huge deal.

There is a proposal in the NCAA to change athletic eligibility to 5 years to play 5 and they are expecting it to pass .....

Joe Hills is a good football player and I don't know it's a risk of losing him but based on our recent history I almost swear it's better to play 'em than redshirt'em. Redshirt, play two years and go to the draft. Play THREE YEARS and go to the draft. Which is better for the University's football program? Early GAME experience or a year holding the clipboard?

sure you'd like to have the extra year if he stays all 4 years, but at that point we didnt find the 2nd receiver yet. had to get him out on the field and see if he could make an impact, did the same thing with lecorn and it worked out.

I think the new rule was going to effect redshirting as well. Maybe even do away with it if they adopt the 5 year plan.
