View Full Version : Split between Davis and Maddox?

I think Davis is going to be a force this year, but is he going to be able to carry the load as a full-time back. I certainly hope so.
I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on the projected split of carries between Davis and Maddox (or anyone else).

Davis will be a beast this year. Maddox had better step up or he may get passed up on the depth chart.

Davis is effective if he can run the ball about 12-15 times a game. I like the way he catches the ball out of the backfield. Someone else has to step up to give us 8-10 carries. I would like to see Maddox but if not, then Baker or Miles. No matter what, they need to average 4.0 yards per carry. When was the last time one of our runners broke a long one? I can only remember Derek Watson's run against Clemson or maybe Bobby Wallace's run against Middle Tennessee State.

i think maddox has already been passed, by many reports of his performance.

Cory Boyd had a couple jaw dropping runs last year

I'm now officially confused about how many games (?) Davis must sit out. I thought it was only one game (the UAB game as announced by Spurrier). On Upstate tater radio yesterday (with George Rogers as guest host), they were talking about the first two games. That is incorrect isn't it? davis will miss the UAB game? please help...

Being down here in Florida, I only get to see 7 or 8 of Carolina's games. I remember one run of Cory's where Todd Ellis shattered my ear drums. Mike Davis has always been a power runner and I love him for it. Remember the game two years ago in the swamp? That game was a killer.

There is no doubt that Davis can be a full time back. The only thing that worries me is that when he gets close to the goal line, he has total abandonment of his body. I know he is in great shape, but so are the LBs and SS on the other team.

I agree with your assessment of a "long run". CB had some good TD run's last year, but when is the last time we had a 70 yard TD?
Granted they don't happen everyday, but it seems like we have had less than the norm.

I like Maddox because he's from Anderson. I always like the guys that stay in state. Just like Mike Davis. I would love to see alot of 2nd down and 4. That opens the offense up to different options. When its 2nd and 8-9 then the defense knows you're probably going to throw. I think the offensive line is the farthest along since Spurrier has been at Carolina.

First off i am confused, i thought that maddox had a good spring and was looking good in practice so far. I havent been able to make it to a practice yet though. I have heard coach state that baker has a ways to go but that kenny has looked decent in practice. Hopefully i can make it to the scrimmage today at three so i can get a better look.
And can anyone confirm which games davis is actually sitting out. seems to be some descrepencies on which ones. thanks

If the O-Line creates the holes then anyone of our runners are capable of doing the job. I like the fact that we depth on the O-Line and that they have to practice everyday against one of the toughest defenses in the SEC. I'm real excited about this year as long as we don't lay any eggs.

In the spring SOS said Mike would most likely sit out the UAB game.
I expect Miles to rs. I know he has looked decent so far, but that is w/o pads. This wouldn't be a the first time the first week someone has looked like a no brainer to play, but once the pads come on it's a different ball game.

Someone should put up a list of who has to sit out some games...
Davis is out 1 game?
Isnt Meredith out for 2?
Are either of the Lindsey brothers?

Davis = UAB ONLY
Meredith = 1st two games (NCST/VANDY)
Lindsey's = fine

From what I have been hearing, Miles has been better than Baker (and Maddox practically). I think I remember that it was the intentions of the coaches to redshirt one and play the other. So far, Miles has only played a few days and has outperformed what Baker has done in the whole spring practice. I know they haven't put pads on yet, but comparatively, Miles has been playing better than Baker in what we have done so far this fall.
So, if all the above is true, then I expect for Miles to get his share this season...of course, its still a little too early to tell.

Again, Miles will be a freshman all american and IMO may end up with more carries than Davis at the end of the year.

I think that Mike will get the majority of the carries and then the rest will be split between Wallace and Maddox. Both Miles and Baker will more than likely RS. I think between Mike, Bobby, and Brian we can get the job done good enough if we have decent O line play. Coach did say at all of the Gamecock club meetings that it was Bobby's senior year and he was going to get a good many carries this year.

i think it should be davis 12-15 carries, baker 5-8,maddox 5-8,id then put wallace 4th and red shirt miles because.
btw, did wallace get a red shirt for last year

I want us to be able to start a drive at our own 30-yard line and know we are only one play away from 6 points. We need a burner. We know that we can move the ball steadily, which is what will wear a defense down, and we'll have our share of moving the ball... However, I would love for us to break 5 or 6 long ones that have the potential to turn the game around... or kill the opposing defense's spirit... I don't care who is being handed the ball as long as they can make that happen...
I despise Clemson with every bone in my body, but when their offense takes the field, they are always a few good blocks away from 6 points b/c they have so many burners... I am ready to have some legitimate big play threats...

Maddox has been a no show so far...and a slight disappointment to some bc alot of people penciled him as a premier back...he's not a quanittiy yet.
IMHO baker or Miles may break the two deep behind Davis and Wallace

If things continue the way they are going, I think Miles may make #2 by mid season if not sooner. The thing about this is...Can Miles block. If he cannot pickup the blitz he will not play much. This might be where Brian has a substantial lead.

MIKE DAVIS GETS THE MAJORITY OF PLAYS AT THE TAILBACK SLOT.
BRIAN MADDOX WILL BE A LOT BETTER BACK THAN SOME OF THE POSTERS HERE ARE SAYING. IT WILL BE A LONG SEASON AND BRIAN HAS ALL THE TOOLS TO BECOME A VERY GOOD RUNNING BACK.
ERIC BAKER WILL ALSO SEE THE BALL A FEW TIMES EACH GAME AND MAYBE MORE IF HE DOES WELL.
BOBBY WALLACE, I JUST DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS ONE. I WISH HIM THE BEST AND HOPE HE GETS TO PLAY SOME THIS YEAR AND SHOW OFF HIS TALENT.
TAYLOR RANK, THE HEART OF A LION. HOPEFULLY, HE WILL PLAY ON SPECIAL TEAMS AND ALSO SEE SOME SPOT DUTY AT RB???
KENNY MILES - ALL THE TALENT IN THE WORLD AND HE WILL BE MOST LIKELY ON THE RED SHIRT LIST.

Why is everyone so down on Maddox? I have not got out to practice yet, but it seems he has not impressed anyone yet. Is he getting alot of reps?

My favorite Davis run ever was when he knocked Gaines Adams on his ass.
Damn that was sweet.

Bobby Wallace for 80 yards, either last year or the year before. Either way, your're right it's been way too long

Kenny Miles will be too good not to play this season..He brings GAMEBREAKING speed to our backfield which has been sorely missing.
Backfields these days usually have a back that runs between the tackles and a back that has homerun ability..Davis and Maddox are essentially the same type of back so that should mean either Miles or Baker seeing quite a few snaps to help give defenses more to prepare for.
If Miles passes Eric Baker on the depth chart then I would like to see Baker either redshirt or go move to linebacker (where he played in Prep School)..The coaches at Fork Union said he was a nasty hitter w/ Florida speed..

I couldn't agree more. I was really thinking that Chris Culliver was going to give us that threat, but now he is on defense.
Trust me, I hate Clemson. But CJ and Ford, and even Davis give them those options where they are one play away from the House.
As an example, last year in the Clemson game, I remeber specifically that Cory Boyd broke off a big run or short pass (can't remember which) to the outside and had nothing but daylight to the endzone. Don't get me wrong, it was still a great play that probably picked up forty yards or so. But I remember thinking that CJ or Davis would have been gone.
Now don't slam me or call me a tater. I would rather have our team than their team and we have certain strengths that they don't have. But I do wish we had that one guy on offense that was always one play from going the distance.

miles will also walk on water, resurrect stom thrumond for the georgia game, eat 3 pounds of boiled peanuts in one sitting and then part the red defensive tackles and take it to the house.

In the SEC you need more than one good back. Davis will be the man this year and Maddox, Baker and Miles will get their share of carries. It's about time we had a problem like this, too many good backs.
