View Full Version : If the SEC Expanded....

What two teams would you like to see join the SEC?
I personally would go with Memphis and South Florida. Especially South Florida. Good team with a lot of potential. Memphis because it's a natural rivalry for Tennessee and/or Vandy.

Louisville and Central Florida!

That is a interesting question. I don't really think the SEC will expand but if it did I would like to see clemson and memphis join.

North Carolina and Missouri drop Arkansas(trade with big 12) and Vandy to the Big East

I say we get rid of Arkansas and put them in the Big 10 where they belong, then we add South Florida, Louisville, or even West Virginia.

I don't think expansion is feasible. but just for shits and giggles.
ECU - To get the SEC into North Carolina (ACC country)
and maybe someone like Memphis or Louisville

i dont really want it expanded, but i know we were one of the benefactors in 92'. if you add two, at least one has got to be a top level school. i also dont really see a top tier program that is around who is not tied in to another conference. if i had to take schools from other conferences i would NOT take west virginia or north carolina as stated above. kind of a crazy thing to have a west or north something in the conference. i guess i would put fla state and uab in. fla state is strong and uab, after years of recruiting, could be competitive.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE GEORGIA TECH AND CLEMSON, GA TECH WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION WITH THEIR STYLE OF DEFENSE AND RUNNING GAME AND CLEMSON WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE JUST SO THEY WOULD HAVE TO PLAY WEEK END AND WEEK OUT WITH A QUALITY LEAGUE OPPONENT AND PLUS THAT USC CLEMSON GAME WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER, COULD YOU IMAGINE IF CLEMSON WAS IN THE SEC WEST AND US IN THE EAST, AND WE MEET UP IN ATLANTA WOW!

you ever been to Little Rock? if so, I think you'd understand why I'd want West Virginia to replace them...even though I'd have USF or Louisville first. Little Rock is about 750 miles to the West...Morgantown, WV is only about 450.
which one you wanna drive to on a Friday night for a Saturday game? lol

08-07-2008, 04:51 PM
well that makes some sense I guess but as long as Arky is in the SEC West division...
but really...how the HELL can Clemson be in the SEC West?!??!

i don't think it should be expanded, I think 2 teams should swap, as I said Arkansas for Missouri, and Vandy for UNC...though the ACC should trade Vandy to the Big East for Louisville
SangareeCrew
08-07-2008, 04:54 PM
The no-brainer would be Louisville......in fact, I would be in favor of adding Louisville if Arkansas ever goes to the Big XII, which they would do in a heartbeat if given the chance. If we were to just add 2 to the current league, then I would have to go with Louisville and Clemson, but Clemson probably would not have the cajones to join the SEC. Another interesting team to consider would be Memphis.

Funny thing is I bet on other boards (UT, UF, UGA, Ole Miss) they are saying get rid of South Carolina...
Anywho..the SEC wouldnt expand to over 12 teams...so we would have to drop a team or two. Realistically, us, Arkansas, and Vandy are the teams I see as those teams. But it has to be thought of in more than just football terms. I say drop Kentucky and Arkansas - send KY to the Big East and Arkansas to the Big 10...And lets pick up USF and ECU..hell I dont know.

i say no expansion, keep the teams. in fact, all conferences should have 12 teams and the same format as the SEC and ACC
BUT....
if anything, Vandy to Big East, Louisville to SEC East (makes the Louisville/Kentucky rivalry matter). that's it. i would say move Arkansas, but who would we get that would fit in the west? Houston? no.

First of all, Vandy is a FOUNDING MEMBER of the SEC. They are going nowhere (and they have a LOT more SEC championships than Carolina.)
Secondly, Georgia Tech WAS ALREADY in the SEC. They left. They ain't coming back.
Finally, if the SEC expanded to 14 teams (not a bad idea with a 12-game schedule,) I'd support Louisville (a second Kentucky school,) and definitely Clemson.
Clemson wouldn't do it but two schools each from South Carolina, Bama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee would be great. Louisville in the West and Clemson in the East.

it'll never happen but i wouldn't mind seeing Clemson & GT join the SEC. they would add good depth to an already unbelievable conference.
i agree with achilles on the clemson thing, carolina doesn't have any room to talk about what clemson could or couldn't do in the sec. they kick our ass a hell of a lot more than we have kicked theres. that ain't got a damn thing to do with which conference either team is in...

arkansas belongs in the sec........this debate/rumor comes up from time to time about them joining the big twelve to which a large majority of posters quickly dismiss. Arkansas is very proud of its southern heritage and sees its memebership in the sec as futher validation of its southern roots

It would probably a financial decision , Maybe an increase in TV coverage. Living in Eastern NC we get no regional coverage all regional goes to the ACC. We need to add NC and Texas to coverage area. You no your not going to get an ACC team. I say East Carolina and somebody in Texas such as Texas Tech or Texas A&M . That would be hard to pull in those two. Anybody else in Texas that would be available? Even a Virginia or West Virginia team would be good. It would definetly be a TV coverage expansion.

I wouldn't be in favor of adding anyone that would make an already brutal conference even more brutal. That being said, Clemson would be an obvious choice since we already have to play them every year. Outside of the Tigers though, I would be in favor of any team that would almost guarantee a sure win every year.

Florida State to the west division and Georgia Tech and Clemson to the east. I would then (just as some others have said) move Arkansas to the Big XII. UK could go to the Big East (natural move to make rivalry with Louisville more intense.) Vandy could then move to the ACC (even though they're not in a coastal state.) I think the move of these three would be great. I believe some rivalries like Ohio State/Michigan or Auburn/Alabama get more attention because they also carry the pressure of conference standings. I do realize that this doesn't always help like the Mississippi/Mississippi St. rivalry.

I would have to say Memphis in the west, went to the Liberty bowl and that was a fun trip. That would be a fun road trip. For the East, I would have to say either Central Florida or East Carolina.
Whatsgoingonhere?
08-07-2008, 09:56 PM
Louisville and Virginia Tech or Florida State.Florida State was invited before US. They said, "no." They'd rather PAY $500,000 to be a big boy in the little ACC sandbox than pay only $150,000 to be just another team in the SEC.
Nope. They had their chance. They can now wallow where they landed.
I really don't want any team that decided NOT to pursue SEC membership when the opportunity arose to participate (FSU, Miami, Tulane (again).)
Whatsgoingonhere?
08-07-2008, 09:59 PM
Then again, look at this way: the SEC as it is can claim to be just about perfect. Not too much, not too little, competitive across the board in every sport, raking in the dough, producing stellar athletes and scholars and the envy of every other NCAA organization in the country.
Why dick with it?

SINCE THIS IS FOR FUN - ONLY, I WOULD SAY WHAT A COUPLE OF OTHER POSTERS HAVE ALREADY STATED:
ADD EAST CAROLINA - GOOD RAID INTO ACC COUNTRY AND PUT THEM IN THE EAST DIVISION. EAST CAROLINA WOULD KINDA BE LIKE USC WAS WHEN WE FIRST GOT INTO THE SEC, IT WOULD TAKE THEM A WHILE TO GET PRETTY GOOD AS A FOOTBALL TEAM.
ADD LOUISVILLE - PUT THEM IN THE WEST DIVISION. HERE YOU WOULD ALSO PICK UP A GOOD BASKETBALL TEAM. THEY WOULD ALSO BE A GOOD RIVAL FOR KENTUCKY.

Well, Clemson ain't coming. They are happy being a big fish in a small (football) pond (not intended as smack, just the truth). They have a stellar ACC program right now with top notch facilities for their league. If they would move to the SEC, they would have at best average facilities. They would have relatively nothing to gain and a whole lot to lose.
North Carolina is out for one reason........basketball. Say what you want, the ACC is the premier basketball conference. UNC is not going to leave that.
The best bet is to pick up schools from smaller conferences (Conf USA, Sunbelt). I think that South Florida and either Memphis or Louisville would be great pickups. Another one kind of off the radar would be Southern Miss.

08-07-2008, 11:04 PM
ok... it's not happening... now that we have that out of the way... only speaking in hypotheticals, i think the first calls would have to be to acc schools who may be tempted to move such as clemson and georgia tech. outside of that, i'd think west virginia would make sense as would possibly south florida if they continue to put money into their athletic dept... i think texas schools may be a bit too far west to stretch and i don't think the nc acc schools would want to join. louisville would be ok if we were desperate but i really don't think schools like memphis, ecu, or whoever else in that ilk would have enough resources to compete in the sec.

Really? I have not heard this? I can see them moving up to div I in football but I don't see it being in a BCS conference. The facilities are far too small and that school, though nice, is a headache to get in and out of. Maybe it is being rumored, but I can't see it happening!

i grew up in florida and let me tell you this..UF had a losing football program until the 80's and had a non existent basketball program until the 90 mid nineties. and they had been in the sec for 60 yrs. in the short time that we have been in the sec we have 1 sec basketball championship, 2 nit natnl championships, 4 college world series appearence, 1 collegiate track title and have vastly improved our football program. imo, we have showed ourselves well.
