Davis injured; Maddox moves up to No. 1 RB
University of South Carolina senior tailback Mike Davis, who is the Gamecocks' leading returning rusher, hurt his shoulder Thursday night and could be out for a week, coach Steve Spurrier said. "Mike Davis just fell on the ground in drill," Spurrier said. "Nobody touched him. So he missed the entire practice. He'll probably be out a week or so."
The 5-foot-9, 214-pound Davis rushed for 518 yards and five touchdowns last season while also catching 23 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown.
With Davis sidelined three weeks before USC's opener vs. North Carolina State, sophomore Brian Maddox of Anderson will moved up to No. 1 ahead of junior Taylor Rank and freshman Eric Baker, Spurrier said.

Really enjoyed watching Maddox on that espnU reality show last year. He was always doing the voluntary workouts. Very impressive.

Spurrier doesn't even mention Bobby... what in the world.
I really hope he's trying to keep focus off B-wall so that when he comes in a game he'll blow the D away... but I have a feeling its less sneaky than that. I hope he hasn't had more off-field or academic issues!

I don't know it for sure, but I'm putting two and two together.
Spurrier had said in a couple of interviews this summer that we needed to get Wallace in the game and get the ball in his hands. . . He said last week that there were a handfull of guys that didn't want to get with the program this summer, and said we'll deal with them this fall when they start practice. . . . . I have heard some people say that Wallace was one of those that wasn't as consistent in his voluntary workouts as most of the rest of team. Not certain about it, but it would make sense.

What about kenny miles? Guess he's not ahead of baker in spurrier's eyes.
He imight be our second best back in my eyes, but he is a true Fr and not likely to see the field this year with the number of capable backs ahead of him. According to last night's reports by spurt even Rank had a great practice... I guess we can all expect Davis to be #1 and Maddux to be #2 this year. I'd love to see Miles get a shot as a true Fr, but again it is not likely. Baker has looked relly good too, so I expect he'll be our third options with Rank as #4 and miles Rs... I was really imrpessed with Wallace in the Spring, but if he was not putting in work over the summer he has effectively ended his own career here.

08-08-2008, 10:35 AM
Unfortunately you guys won't be able to attend practices anymore, but I'm pretty sure once they start getting into the actual gameplan and plays you will see that Miles has a long way to go on knowing the blocking schemes as a RB. That's what was holding Baker back in the spring, and that's what held Maddox back last season. I believe it will be in the best interest of our program to rs Miles.
Now on Wallace. Not to take up for being a slacker, but man I can understand his frustration at times. He's been here four or five years now, and really hasn't played much. Most of that had to do with the talent in front of him, and I'm sure that can get you down. Even the laziest person on our team has worked their tails off compared to what everyday people do. He could be just going through the motions for his final year of college and may be trying to enjoy the overall experience a little more. I'm just guessing. This doesn't excuse him, but it is understandable.

I don't understand the "out for a week" statement. How does Coach know that? Was a specific injury/bruise diagnosed that he may not be sharing publicly that would make him say that, or is he just giving us a random estimate? Will he need a MRI?

It was prolly just a guess..we're all kinda in the dark about anything related to his injury i guess we should find out within a day or two but as of now i couldn't even tell you if it was a bruised shoulder or a broken collar bone
i never understood all the hoopla over Bobby Wallace.

Wallace isn't being mentioned as one of the top three because he's not an every down back. He's a 'situation' back/receiver.

any Athletic trainer o physiologist would be able to tell that pretty quickly if they were worth a damn...broken collar bone is pretty simple to diagnose lol

i always liked bobby because of how he's built and the wiggle to his game, those short stocky make you miss backs have always been my favorite. he may never get significant action here but i still think he can produce if he gets on the field. bobby is big enough to be an every down back, or spot duty back behind mike.
its reasonable to write him off because he hasnt done much yet, but its also worth noting that he was undersized his first year, and caught up in a numbers crunch or injuries his 2nd and 3rd years. this is a make or break year for him, he can still go back and probably get another year of elgibility, but i take the non redshirt last year as the coaching staff saying this is your last chance. plus we probably want to move forward with maddox, baker, and miles if wallace doesnt show anything this year.

Whelp, I've seen it before...WITH ME! Played hs football and remember extending my arm during a play and just collapsing to the ground in pain, untouched. Went to the doctor and sure nuff, had a stress fracture in my CB. Apparently when the muscles attched to my CB flexed, it was pulling the bone apart...very painful. Arm in sling for 2 months.

Davis fell during a drill Thursday night. Coach Steve Spurrier says Davis will be out a week or so. He came into the season as the starter. He was the Gamecocks' second-leading rusher with 518 yards last season.
Spurrier says sophomore Brian Maddox will move up to the first team in Davis' absence.
Backing up Maddox will be junior Taylor Rank and freshman Eric Baker.
http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8810735
To me this is just saying that Maddox will be taking the majority of the snaps in practice, not that Davis will be out so long that Maddox is now number 1 on the depth chart.

He has the talent and always has, he's also been in SOS doghouse since day 1, either he has academic issues, or off the field issues
What has he done since he has been here that says he deserves to be in the rotation?
Here are his stats:
05 - 41 rushes , 135 yards , 0 TD's
06 - 5 rushes , 107 yards , 1 TD's (a chunk of those yards came on is only TD run of the season against 3rd stringers from MTSU)
07 - Didnt play and didnt apply for a redshirt.
Sorry, but where is the "talent" or "production"?..The reason he hasnt been given a chance is because he isnt good enough..He isnt better than the backs in front of him..If he was good enough, he would be the backup to Mike Davis and not Brian Maddox.
Also, Spurrier runs his team using the saying the best players will play. He doesnt play favorites and the players that bust their butts and play hard and are the BEST usually are the ones out on the field..Clearly, Bobby isnt good enough to beat out Mike Davis or Brian Maddox for the matter to see playing time..Why should our coach play him if he isnt good enough to earn PT? I dont care what Bobby Wallace did in high school..Its cool that he was Spurrier's first "hand picked" recruit..But Spurrier was picking from the bottom of the barrel when he first came here..He needed speed in the backfield and Bobby was available so he took a chance on him..Heck, Chris Smelley has yet to live up to his 4 star Gatorade POY accolades he got in high school yet you dont see people yelling to give him a chance..The fact is, the staff has moved on and are now looking to the future with Baker and Miles..Bobby is a good guy and a good teammates..but a significant contributor in this offense, he wont be..Especially when your head coach is saying he is hanging around.
