My 12 yr old daughter was in the junior GC two years ago and because of some issues with unrealized benefits and the club's neglect to follow through on a promised comp membership last year as restitution, she's no longer a member. Today she received the following email:

Dear Allie,

Over the last year I have tried to consistently communicate with you on major developments from the Athletics Department. Today is no exception. In fact, today we are making one of the most strategic announcements in Gamecock Athletics history. In an ideal world, I would have been able to personally meet with each one of you, and hopefully I will get the chance in the coming months.

For now I hope the video found below is useful. I’m appreciative of Tommy Suggs, who joins me in the video, to give you the background, overview and goals, for the future of our Athletics programs- a future that positions our university, the University of South Carolina, to consistently battle for championships in all sports. Thank you for taking the time to watch, listen and consider, but most of all, thank you for being garnet.
Additional information related to this announcement is now available on our new website: www.thegarnetway.org as well as on the Gamecock Club website: www.gamecockclub.org.

As always, I appreciate the support and passion of Gamecock Nation. There is only one “us” working toward making our Carolina a championship caliber program.

Sincerely,

Eric Hyman

SHE'S 12 and a FORMER member! I'm sure this is a mistake, because certainly Hyman and the GC wouldn't beg CHILDREN for their money, would they? Though I find it hard to believe they wouldn't know their Junior members from their adult members. Despicable, if not an error.

btw, this is the first email she's ever received from the university, regardless of what the copy says.

so, how much can she donate?

More than likely her name ended up in a mass e-mail list that they used by mistake

Hyman doesn't care if he has to smash some piggy banks. He's just trying to get that money.

That's the same email I got. I would assume it was just a computer generated list and she happened to be on it from past involvement in GC.
They are serious about raising money!

On a side not: Tommy is really starting to look old!

I'm with ya, but here's the thing:

A kid's age is included on his/her membership record. Anyone harvesting email addresses into a list that includes Junior GC members is, at the very least, totally incompetent for such a task. My membership record has the same email address associated with it and I didn't get one of these. Now, it's likely they eliminated duplicate addresses from the mailer list, which is standard for this type of thing, but her record shouldn't have even been pulled. Not only is she just 12 years old, she's not even a current member of the Junior Gamecock Club.

I'm not angry that they want my child's money, because I think (I hope anyway) they know better. What I'm ticked about is the escalated shameless begging without any regard for the audience. Everything official that comes out of the Ath Dept, no matter what it is, seems to include a plea for cash. It is tiresome, to me at least.

Not true at all. It means, at the very least, that they are human, and as such, are not perfect beings. And for other non-perfect humans to expect them to be, or then be banished into being "totally incompetent", bespeaks of a rather large degree of irrationality.....

the real question is did she give any money or is she gonna be a tightwad?

not to sound mean or anything, but there are going to be bigger problems in life than to worry about the athletic dept. accidentally sending your 12 y/o an e-mail. stop worrying about it delete it and move on. no sense in stressing or creating a problem of something so meniscule. I received an e-mail too and it's b/c I used to be a student gamecock club member a few years back, but I am no longer a member in anyway. Just a mass e-mail. Delete it and move on to more important things

Everyone who has donated to the University in the last 10 years got the email or a letter or both. It is called marketing. They are not trying to get your childs trust fund, just a part of it.......

I've donated to the University (not much at all though) and they must've lost my email, I haven't gotten it yet....

Doesn't she get $50 from Grandma for her birthday or something? Surely she could part with half of that to help with the Gamecocks' success.

Irrational? Seriously? In the event this is an error, you really think that sending a big-bucks (or any, really) donation solicitation to Junior Gamecock Club Members (children) is a competent performance of the task? Can I come work for you? I promise to perform my duties with this exact degree of precision.

I know about bigger worries, kiddo. Moreso than I hope you ever have to know. Sometimes its the smaller things (like college athletics) that provide a distraction from the overwhelming emptiness and sorrow that potentially consumes some of us on a daily basis. If we all moved on to more important things, there'd be no need for Gamecock message boards or any other form of entertainment. I do appreciate you're thoughts on the subject though - thanks for chiming in.

Apparently, yes. Yes, they would....

I actually think this whole thing is funny. I feign anger but I'm honestly amused by the thought that the push for more dough is so strong that the GC has stooped to soliciting children as part of a broader target group. Maybe they'll get enough lunch money from the kids to complete the facilities plan and reverse the childhood obesity problem in the process.

I receive a solicitation from the univ at least once a month. They just send out stuff to anyone with connections to the univ. I feel like they are acting like credit card comp sending aps to everyone.

Sorry, but exactly where in this email do they even mention money, much less 'shamelessy beg for money from a 12 year-old'????

Is it in the embedded video or something becuase the email itself doesn't even have the word 'money' in it so I don't really see what's so offensive...?

Yeah, I was reading this and wondering the same thing. I don't see any mention of donations in the email at all.

I have certainly accidentally clicked the "reply to all" on occassion when swamped at work. Its not a big deal. My whole family got the same email. My mom even got a Viagra solicitation the same day I think. If I fired someone every time they made a mistake like that, I wouldn't have anyone left to do the work. That being said I don't think gAmekok really intended to make such a big deal out of it. He was just posting something he found interesting and pseudo humorous.
