Wanting to get some of your opinions on who you think is the best QB to play in SC.

Kentrell was a very good player but it would be hard to say he was even the best QB Gaffney ever had. It was a different game then but Roger Harris was a helluva QB in the early 60s. This is a question that will require a lot of thought.

Derek Ross was also a great QB who played for Northwestern in '97.

But I think you can say that Kentrell Jones had one of the best performances ever in a state championship game.
He was 25 of 40 for 467 yards and 3 touchdowns and added 45 yards on the ground for a total of 512 yards.

Here is a clip from the 1997 state championship game between Gaffney and Northwestern when Kentrell Jones was 25 of 40 for 467 yards and 45 rushing for a 512 yard performance.

YEAH. Gaffney lucked up and beat us that year....We had to come back from down big but lost late when one of our Db's missed ball and Gaffney WR scored to win by 7

Who did Roger Harris play for?
Roger Harris played for Gaffney during the Bob Prevatte years...early 60s. Steve Fuller at Spartanburg was pretty good too. No disagreement on Freddie Solomon...saw him in the 1969 Championship Game.

Derek Ross was playing opposite of Kentrell Jones in that '97 State Championship he threw for over 300 yards in that game.

James Island had a good quarterback back in the day... Marty Crosby was his name I believe.... held the national high school record for touchdown passes in a career for awhile.

Steve Fuller at spartanburg 74-75 was a good QB

Freddie was not only the best QB,but most likely also the best player at any position.

Some of you younger fans get the notion that whoever you see that impresses you are the best ever. Remember there has been a lot of football played in the state of SC, most of it before you were born. Freddie Solomon and Steve Fuller are just two of many excellent QB's the state of SC has produced.

Tony Rice won the National championship at Notre Dame....anyone do that?

Wasn't the rocket on that team...the Heisman runner-up? That team was loaded with talent. Rice wasn't in the running for the Heisman.
Besides, Rice didn't play his first year because of his 690 SAT score.
Rice was the only starter that didn't play pro

I thought the question was who was the best HS QB to play in SC??? Not what QB went to the pros from SC?

Again, statisically speaking, Rice isn't near Jones or Korn. Best in college isn't best in HS or vice versa. Korn may have been the best to play the HS game in SC. Rice was surrounded with talent. Who couldn't shine there?

If you never saw Rice play in high school, he was awesome. Korn and Rice were totally different QB's. Korn was more of a passer. Rice was totally an option QB and when he came out of high school there wasn't a better option QB in America. Like I said before, the state of SC has put out many talented QB's over the last 40 years. Rice and Korn are definitely two more to add to the list.

Yeah...rice was a hybrid QB. He was the jewel of Holtz's first recruiting class at ND. I'm familiar with story. I tend to side with the Peyton Manning type QB's. The ones that are intelligent, can make quick decisions, and make very little mistakes. Those are the best QB's. Any stud can run the ball, but it takes a greater person to lead an entire offense.

This thread is not who you liked the best but the best QB that has played in SC. And you're right. Rice was a stud.

Actually, the thread is about Kentrell Jones. I don't believe that he was.
True, Rice was a stud, but not the best QB to play HS football here. Korn has better stats under his belt than Rice does. So does Jones.

Agreed. Kentrell is not even in the top 5 IMO.Freddie Soloman was the best. Rice,Fuller and Korn are way ahead of him, plus a few others.

The rocket was good, the team was good. But STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, national Championship game: Rocket: 0 TDs Tony Rice: 2 TDs

Another name that hasn't been mentioned yet that would be one of the top 5 QB's would be Perry Cuda. Although he flopped in college, he was still a Parade HS All American...I'd still put him behind Korn, Jones, Solomon, and Rice

Statistically speaking the best QB in SC History, at least at the HS level is Willy Korn. Beyond HS, Tony Rice would have to be the most accomplished (as a side note we do have a SC HS QB who is playing in the NFL right now, pts for whoever can guess it). However Korn's 281 completions and 53 TDs is tops in the books.

Everett Golson -- current QB for Myrtle Beach High School could go down as the best ever. I sure would like to see him end up in Garnet and Black.

Porter-Gaud had a QB in the mid to late 80 named Peter Bassett that was probably the best pure passers I have ever seen.

the best qb ever in south carolina was Billy Ammons at Camden in 1964 he is still the only HS football player ever from south carolina to be on the cover of SI. That team beat a very good Easley team that year to win state 27-0. Oh yea by the way that team only gave up seven points all year and didn't give that up until the playoffs. I am pretty sure they are still the only team to go the whole regular season unscored on. Billy was a mobile QB with a rocket arm wento on to play at clemson and then came back and coached camden to a state title in 1990 with stars like Bobby Engram and Vonnie Holiday.
