Ok icockys, i have had a cable router hardwired to my playstation just to play NCAA. Well i know have a Linksys wireless router. I hook the ethernet cord to the Linksys from the cable router in the "internet" spot on the back and my laptop connects and says it has excellent connection. I then put another ethernet cord from PS3 to Linksys in one of the four spots available. Sounds great huh???? NOOOOO.....my laptop will not pull up a web page or anything, i've took firewalls down, everything i can think of. Also my PS3 says network error. Please help i'm going to try and post pics to show which model the wireless is.

Try unplugging the router and the modem. Then plug in the modem and let it fully start up. Then plug in the router and let it start up with all devices attached. If that doesn't work go to your setup for the router (should be like http://168.....etc. It will be an IP address. You might have to set up which devices can attach. I had to do that with my netgear.

your laptop should always be able to log into the router since it is a network address not an internet address. It is the same as getting into another computer on your network basically. Is it a new router? What is the model number?

the address for the linksys should be:
http://192.168.1.1
username: admin
password: admin
log in and check what connection type is selected, it should be "DHCP Automatic configuration"
If that is selected, go to the "status" link and let me know what the ip addresses are...

By default, your wireless router should have shipped with DHCP turned on. It may also be turned on inside your modem. I would suggest you contact your ISP to make sure the modem is set in bridge mode (turning DHCP off). Leave DHCP on in the wireless router setup.

when i look at the info of the connection it says all the info was provided by DHCP. I am getting totally lost at this point, but helpful

alright, let's start from the beginning to make sure everything is wired/setup correctly:
1. you have a coaxial cable going into your modem.
2. then you have a RJ-45 (ethernet cable) going from your modem into the main port on the wireless router.
3. that gives the wireless router the juice now, whether it is broadcasting a wireless signal or a wired one...i recommend all connections come from that (router, not modem), regardless if the modem has more ports.
i think you are mistaking your "router" from your modem in this situation. the linksys is a wireless router. what you plug the actual coaxial cable into is a modem. make sure there is NOTHING plugged into that besides the coaxial cable, the power (of course), and an ethernet cable going from the modem into the wireless router. everything else should come from the wireless router from now on...

disconnect everything from modem (leave cable and power).
1. power on the modem and do a hard restart (push that little button in with a pen or something until it starts to go through motions).
2. plug ethernet cable from modem into router. power router on. if things aren't working then...do a hard restart on the router.
this happened to a buddy of mine recently and i don't really remember what i did to fix it. i want to say i just logged into the modem or router's settings (by going to 192.x.x.x.x...the IP for your modem) and doing the option that said "reset" or "restart". it just refreshed everything.
he had disconnected things when moving and had some new pieces of hardware and i think it just got confused. after that, he was all good.

that just means you are connecting to the wireless router but the router isn't seeing the rest of the world...
pull the power on both and then plug them back up and see if they can start talking...
if not plug the ps3/computer directly into the modem via the ethernet cord... and reset the power on the modem. if that doesn't work the cable company may have a problem

i got the modem from my father in law. he had used it before, you think that matters?

Yeah. Your cable company has to have it hooked up using the Mac address or something like that....call them first. It is a problem with that, not the router.

if all of that doesn't work try this:
un-plug the PS3 from the router.
turn the router and modem off.
turn the modem on and let it completely start up (should take about 1-2 mins).
turn on the router and let it completely start up (should take about 1-2 mins).
Try your internet connection. If that doesn't work go to Start -> Run -> type in cmd in the new window that opens up type: ipconfig/release and press enter. type ipconfig/renew and press enter. You can close the window when it is done.
Try your internet connection. If it works then try to connect your PS3.
It may be that your PS3 is causing the problem. It may have the same IP address as your router which can be changed fairly easily. It will be in the settings of the router you should change it from what it is to something like 192.168.10.1.
