View Full Version : Cack's Toast Of The Game: Week 1

I flirted with this on and off last year and it seemed to get good responses ... so i will do this for each game this year ... i will state once again like i did each time last year ... this doesn't go to the person with the best stats ... but the person whom I FEEL had the best performance

EVERYONE RAISE YOUR GLASS ... FOR WEEK 1 vs. NC STATE ... CACK'S TOAST GOES TO ... COACH ELLIS JOHNSON

i honestly can't remember the last time the Gamecocks pitched a shut out ... not only pitching a shut up ... but giving up ONLY 10 first downs and causing 3-4 turnovers ... complete dominance on defense tonight ... we were one of the worst run defenses in the country last year ... and NC State is a run first team ... and we SLAMMED the door in their face thanks to Coach Johnson :clap::clap::clap::clap:

Honorable mentions
Chris Smelley ... coming off the bench and throwing 3 TD passes
Coach Spurrier ... throwing the ball deep down field with a 27-0 lead late in the 4th quarter
Coach Ray ... nearly blocking a few punts and getting a LOT better punt return to help out the offense

Let's all raise our glasses in honor of this performance. Here's a health Carolina...Forever To Thee

D was awesome. I was complaining early about the O-line and O-line Coach, no holes, no sync, no rhythm?? Don't get me wrong, not to
be down on Beecher whatsoever but when Smelley went in, the holes
were there. WHY?????

The Defense looked great out there. The offense sputtered like school kids for 3 quarters. Then, they looked great too.

I'd love to find the old records from the 80's. We put a fanny whipping on NC State that was Black Magic butt kicking. I think it was a shutout, something like 47-0. Not real sure about the score but that's close. Hehe
On our last touchdown, all the fans in WB was yelling "go for two". They had robbed us the year before in Raleigh and payback was hell. :cocky:

Some may not agree with me, but I believe that we should hand out the award to Carlos Thomas. I noticed a turn around in our offense after he made that pick and we got that TD. The game could've been very different if Carlos didn't make that pick.

personally I think by the time smelley came in they had already run out of gas. I thought that beech played well. he obviously was overthrowing people, but I think that had a lot to do with jitters. booing him was pretty ridiculous. I thought he read the field better than I've seen any gamecock do in a while. I will admit that smelley has come along way with his progressions. for being tommys first real game...not bad. these 2 are going to battle it out all year. good effort out there. awesome how they were all cramping up and we seemed to be totally unharmed the whole game. hats off to the conditioning coach. definitely the best opener we have had in a while. 3 things that should be looked at this week that jumped out at me: 1. still no consistent outside run containment. 2. o line. 3. watch succop win the groza award

way to grind one out gamecocks. this teams got heart...something we haven't really had in a while...they believe.

way longer than I expected. sorry.

I wanted to give props to Captain. He was all over the field on defense. Then on special teams making nice punt returns when normally we would get 2 yards. And on special teams coverage he blasted in for a tackle.

I want to toast Mike Davis for losing weight and showing more speed in his first game in his senior senior. Davis had 14 carries for 101 yards and a TD. A good start to the season.

It was a good game. I loved the way our Defense looked through out the whole game. IT took awhile but the O line started to show some life in the 4th Q. I dont know about Beecher. Hes a good QB but the Oline has to give him more time and he has to trust our WR. Smelly Did one heck of a job after Beecher got hurt. Living in Alabama I get a lot of haze for being a SC fan but its good to get the 1st win under our belt so now if AL looses to Clensuxs I can talk a little..

Capt showed a lot of poise returning punts. I liked how even though he might get hit he was fielding the punts and not letting them bounce. The whole defense was fantastic! I also thought that Jarriel King become pretty dominant in the end of the third quarter into the fourth. I hope that change sticks for next week

are there saves in football or only wins and losses for a QB?

If so, Smelley deserves the save.
