Google Inc. (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=GOOG%3AUS), owner of the most popular Internet search engine, will offer its own free Web browsing software to challenge Microsoft Corp. (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=MSFT%3AUS)

Don't know how I feel about this since I have to test against Opera, IE, Safari, Firefox and it doesn't seem really necessary but oh well.
I will try it out
I just hope it is simple and smooth
I don't want some browser full of features every where and all that

Google is pretty inovative, though. It would take a lot to get me away from IE, but google has some pretty cool stuff. It might be revolutionary....who knows? Since it's google, it should get a fair shot.

Unfortunately for Google, there already is a major contender right now against Microsoft in Firefox. They are going to have to do A LOT of catching up to IE and Firefox, and not to mention they are going to need to produce something that will draw users away from the browser they are currently using. Good luck with that.

I will definitely download it as I'm a big fan of Google. I hope it isn't like Lively though, very cumbersome. Firefox can't be beaten in functionality though, which is my main draw to the browser. If it weren't for the extensions, and the bookmarking UI, I wouldn't be so attached to the browser.
I'll download it later today and try it out. Even if it's not great, I'll still keep it installed for future limited use/updates.
God I hope people switch fast from IE. As soon as I find a free way to do it, I'll print off dozens of Firefox flyers and just post them all over campus.

If one could easily remove IE without it messing up programs, it would be worth it

Google polishes product line with Chrome browser

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- The new Web browser that Google Inc. (http://financial.washingtonpost.com/custom/wpost/html-qcn.asp?dispnav=business&mwpage=qcn&symb=GOOG&nav=el) released Tuesday is designed to expand its huge lead in the Internet search market and reduce Microsoft Corp. (http://financial.washingtonpost.com/custom/wpost/html-qcn.asp?dispnav=business&mwpage=qcn&symb=MSFT&nav=el)'s imprint on personal computers.
The free browser, called "Chrome," is being promoted as a sleeker, faster and more secure alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which has been the leading vehicle for surfing the Web for the past decade. Despite recent inroads by Mozilla Foundation's Firefox, Internet Explorer is still used by roughly three-fourths of the world's Web surfers.
Have any of you tried this yet I really like Firefox, but I am sure Google will really work hard to be a player in this field.

There's a sizable thread about this like 3 threads down.

I'm a huge Firefox fan--but I downloaded it today. I can say, I'm impressed. Its fast (faster than Firefox) and looks really good for a beta. Not enough to make me switch from Firefox (yet)--but not bad at all.
The thing is--Google basically funds Mozilla. It should be interesting where this goes. They took parts of the Mozilla code, along with Apple's Webkit code (which are both open source, so no issues there) to make Chrome. I don't think they're actually going after the browser market as it is, but trying to create a browser that works better for web API's. Its in their best interest to make a browser that works faster with things such as Google Docs, Gmail, and other "cloud" apps. To me, this is about going after Windows as much as anything. Why Windows? If you're able to use Web applications for everything, then why do you need an operating system? Could this be the Google Operating System we've all been looking for? If you combine this with Google Gears, it might.

I'm interested to try it out.... I've been using Mozilla for a while though, so it'll take a bit to adjust.

Google also is counting on Chrome to become the linchpin in its effort to distribute widely used computer programs like word processing, spreadsheets and calendars through the Web browser instead of as applications installed on individual machines. If the crusade is successful, it might undercut Microsoft’s profits by diminishing sales of its Office suite. http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/stories/2008/09/01/google_browser_web.html
Here is a review of this browser which sounds like it is a work in progress that has potential http://www.ajc.com/business/content/shared-gen/ap/High_Tech/TEC_Tech_Test_Google_Chrome.html?cxntlid=inform_ar tr
"Luckily, there's a small add-on program for Firefox that lets the user prevent Flash files from running automatically when a page loads, and it turns Firefox into a stable, efficient browser."
Does anybody here know the name of this Firefox add-on mentioned in this review I need to download it.

Here is a comparison of IE8 and Chrome from MSNBC, which is jointly owned by Microsoft and NBC. Interestingly, the reviewer seems to like Chrome better. Or at least I get that impression.

Nothing beats the functionality of Firefox due to extensions and awesome bookmarking system. I'll still keep the browser installed, and I'll update it as time progresses, but I'll stick to Firefox.
Where is the "home" button

Must have Firefox add-ons are Adblock Plus and Flashblock. I believe Flashblock is the program they are referring to in the article you mentioned above.

Well it looks like if you post on Cockytalk with Chrome, Google says they own your posts.
http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/08/09/03/0247205.shtml?tid=158
Apparently Google cut and pasted their terms of service from some of their other software and well, I am sure they will change this quickly.

i'm going to try it out. if google makes it, it should be worth the try at least. i figured that google would soon try to buy mozilla firefox and thunderbird instead.
i don't like firefox3 much (address bar dropdown sucks, loading is choppy esp on cockytalk reply posts, etc) but it is certainly better than IE and, for my machine, slightly better than Opera or Safari.
I'd say:
Firefox
Safari
Opera
IE
if i was to rank them without trying Chrome yet.

after only about 20 mins of using it, i have to say that:
-installation was oddly slower than i thought it would be
-i can see a few bugs
-runs VERY fast, maybe even faster than Firefox
-uses screen space very well, although the loading bar that appears is strange
-i like the "show passwords" and usernames...as LONG as you are securing your PC and the only user.
my biggest COMPLAINT right now is that i have 3 of the same processes running from the browser...wtf?
by they way, the home screen can be added to the toolbar in the options...click the top right wrench and set it.
