So I have about 2,000 pictures and counting that I've collected from various message boards and what not. Mostly Sigs, logos, avatars, pictures, ect. All of which I use frequently.
The only place I have them is on my laptop. I started thinking what would I do if my laptop crashed, or got stollen? I would be screwed.
I need a way where I can save ALL of my pictures where if something happens to my laptop I can transfer them over to my new computer.
What is the easiest and cheapest way to go here?
I want to do this soon before I regret it

External hard drive, can be pricey depending on size that you buy. Quick, easy, done through a USB port. Also DVD-ROMS.

Like I said I have 2,000 pictures around there. I would probably update them every couple of weeks. What kind would I need?

I have a Western Digital 500 gb that uses USB or Fire Wire. Depending on the RPM of the drive, fire wire makes it upload faster. They are all plug and play so it is easy. You can get them up to and over 1 TB. I am guessing that since this is all on your laptop you have less than 100 gb. I'd go woth about a 500 gb one, you can put your music there too. You can get a good 500 MB one from 80 to 100 bucks. Western Digital, IOmega. Make sure you get the right one because there are some that are PC or MAC specific. Office Depot, Best Buy, Staples all have them.

I have a 250G external as well as a 250G portable external.
My first external must be plugged into a wall to use. I leave it attached to my PC at home and shared on my home network. It works great. I also have a portable one that runs off of USB power. I have it attached to my laptop (velcro on the top). No matter where I am I have all my pictures, over 10,000 songs, and over 100 movies!
They sell them in lower memory as well. You can easily get a 60G external HD for cheap. New egg is usually the cheapest. They are great for the long run, you never know what you might need to back up, or take with you. I love them! I'm closing in on buying a third. When I ultimately make my own PC, I'll have 500G that I just plug up... without a problem!

Well-Do I have to keep it with my laptop?
I just need something where I can put my pictures on it- then put it in the fire safe incase anything happens- and every so often get it back out- and update the new pics.
Can you give me a link to what I would probably need (specific)?
Ive never delt with these as you can tell and I'm clueless

http://www.pricewatch.com/hard_removable_drives/ Select the size you want to find the cheapest deals...
1TB USB SATA 7200rpm (speedy enough) $138.
500GB (ditto specs) $70
(good site to find low prices - includes shipping in the prices...)
At 1MB per pic, you've got a bit over 2GB (if they're bigger, of course you have more...). DVD-RW will hold 4.7GB...always an option until you get something external.

160G - 80$ - Plenty of space for your pics, music, and whatever.
I would recommend a Western Digital or Seagate, but they do not make any much smaller than 160G.
There are some that are as low as 40 - 80G for cheaper...but I personally do not have an experience with any of those brands...(links below)

If you don't already have them in all in the same folder, I'd suggest doing that; makes it easier to backup. Then right click the folder and select properties and that'll tell you how big a backup device you need. Flash drives are getting bigger and are fairly inexpensive. They're not as cheap per GB as the external hard drive but they're easier to take with you if you want to share or pick up new pics from friends. Just be sure to scan for viruses.

i second this, i mean last week i picked up a 2 GB Flash (thumb) drive from office depot, for $9.99, and picked my wife up a 4 GB for $17.99, and if i had gone last Sunday or Monday (Labor Day sale) i could have gotten a 8 GB for $23.99 ( this is normally a 40-60buck drive) they even have flash drives as large as 32G but they are very pricy, plus they have no moving parts like a hard drive does, so that is one less thing to worry about failing

We got a external hard drive from walmart. I put over 16000 pics on it and keep it in a fire proof safe.
