Now that the off-season is here, let's continue our endeavor to name the CockyTalk All-Time Gamecock Football Team. We had previously voted for QB, WR, RB, TE and LB. Those votes are still open and you can reach them by clicking the links at the bottom of this thread.

Now, we are going to vote on the greatest DBs for the All-Time Gamecock Team. This time you are going to vote for your top FOUR DBs. The top FOUR will make the team.

If you feel I left someone out, please post that person's name in this thread.

I chose,

Brad Edwards
Bobby Bryant
Bryant Gilliard
Dick Harris

Note:I probably would have put Ko Simpson in if he'd stayed. I just don't think two years is enough to judge someone on.

Edwards and Harris are definitely there for me. I am still thinking about the other two.

I went w/ Brad, KO, Dunta, Sheldon. I don't personally remember watching some of the older guys, so I couldn't really pick them.

I picked Brown, Edwards, Simpson, and Freeman! Those four guys would start for any team at any time!

Freeman and his damn comment after one of our clemson losses. "I guess I should have played the ball!" Damn it you are a DB! That's your job. To play the ball.

btw,
I still think he is a great player. Plus he went on to play for my dolphins for a few years, but I couldn't vote for him because of that statement.

Two guys who I think deserve to have their names mentioned on the list are: Tony Watkins and Rashad Faison. I wouldn't put either in my top 4, but I think they deserve to be on the poll.

I voted for Brad Edwards, Ko Simpson, Dunta Robinson, and Sheldon Brown

I'll give my age away now, but Alex Hawkins and Bobby Bryant are two of the best to EVER play here. Bryant could close unlike any other. Alex Hawkins was just...Alex Hawkins.

I went with Harris and Edwards as the two best. Then I picked Dunta and Goodman.

Ko could have been, but two years is not enough to put him here IMO.

Had to add Tony Watkins on my list.... he was a tacking MACHINE!

I wanted Faison in my top 4. The only reason he didn't get drafted was due to his size not because of his performance.

Bad Brad Edwards
Dickie Harris
Rick Sanford

I voted for Dunta, Ko, Eiland, and Brown. Yeah, I hated to see Tony Watkins and Rashad Faison weren't on the list. I would have picked them both. I'm only 25 so I don't know much about some of those guys. I do know Rick Sanford is from my home town of Rock Hill. My dad says he was overated.

What? No Tyler Hellams? I may be older but a 4th quarter punt return for a 7-6 victory over Clemson is certainly worthy.

I agree about Tony Watkins. The best tackler out of all the guys that made the poll. He was tough as nails. Some of you older guys will remember him playing with a cast on his hand after breaking his thumb. It was kind of criminal the way he used that cast! Another DB, not that I think he's the greatest of the DB's to play at Carolina, but I'd have to give Frank Adams an honorable mention also. Good return guy (witnessed a kickoff return for a TD, La Tech?) played above his abilities with a lot of heart against awesome SEC competition.

How can Terry Cousin even be listed as an option on this poll. He had a decent NFL career, but I'm sure most Gamecocks like me are still wondering how the hell he wound up in the NFL.

I'm suprised to see Arturo Freeman get that little of votes.. I remember back when he was here he was always all over the field making plays and tackles. But of course I didn't get to see some of the guys mentioned in this thread since I'm young.

Deandre Eiland was awesome...If Ko Simpson would have stayed all 4 years, he would have won hands down.

Brad because of that interception return against klemPsin and he dated my sister...why oh why didnt she marry him!!!
Dunta, Andre, and Sheldon
Terry Cousins...I remember his nickname being Toast when he was here. He did do a great deal better in the pros, but was often times seen trailing receivers while here.

Must not be enough people voting who saw him play???

And he was a good special teams guy/punt blocker.

I voted for Sheldon, Brad, Dunta, and Arturo. We've really had some good players in this position over the years.

You mention a lot of great Gamecocks....but really its gotta be Dickie Harris and the rest. The man was awesome. Every time he returned a kick, you just knew he had a pretty good chance of taking it to the house. I'd give anything to have someone like him now...(and by the way, he played a pretty mean game at d-back too)
Go Cocks!

Harris' senior year, he even played in the offensive backfield against Clemson. He was good..played a number of years in Canada...

But.. from an NFL career standpoint, Sanford is the stud. We've sent some good ones..but they have to sustain good play for a number of years in the pro's to match Rick.

Dickie Harrie was the best return man Carolina ever had. I was at the GA game where he had his career game and it is my biggest football memory at Cariolina. It was also an away game so I was lucky as I went to few away games.

Yes, Dickey was quite a ball player. Very very good.

Edwards, Sheldon, Cousins, and Ko! Looking at this list reminded me of how many good DB's we've had.

Dickie Harris was the man. Best return man ever (led nation, All American) and QB's seldom threw on his side of the field. Vince Dooley almost became ill because of him and more than once claimed he was the best he ever saw.

Bobby Bryant was great, too. Had a long and productive career with the Vikings. Second or third in their career interceptions.

Brad Edwards because of his big interceptions at USC, productive pro career. Was a HS QB and used that knowledge to anticipate plays and routes being run against him.

I almost forgot even though we were at Carolina at the same time and we are the same age one of the greatest of all times, Alex Hawkins. GO CAPTAIN WHO.

Chris Major. Oh anyone remember Chris Major? If he doesn't make a last second tackle on a Citadel kick off return in the first game in '84 then we don't get to be Number 2 in the nation with a chance at a National Championship. Not one of the all time great DB's but he deserves some recognition if Ben Washington does.

Ko could have been, but two years is not enough to put him here IMO.

If Ko had been on the sideline for 2 years and then had those two great years as his junior and senior years, you would likely have voted for him. Therefore, it shouldn't matter that he was only here for 2 years. Those two years were amazing years - career years.

Add Pat Watson, he once had 5 interceptions in a game against Wake, and Stan Juk, who is now a Cardiologist in Cola was another good db. Now, I' m showing my age.

Someone needs to find some film of what Dickie Harris did to Georgia in Athens. He ran back two long kicks for TD's that game. Opposing teams would not kick to him after that, and when his up blockers caught a kick they would pitch it back to him. He went to the Canadian Football League.
