This is just a rant but when I was a kid. There were a couple of great bowl games on New Years Eve....even some leading up to New Years Eve.

Not great teams...but great games.

Then..I remember waking up. eating some lunch, (or a late breakfast) and watching "ALL".... Let me state that again....."ALL" of the best college football had to offer throughout the rest of the day.

Sugar Bowl...
Orange Bowl...
Fiesta Bowl..
Rose Bowl..

The Gator was an afterthought (an appetizer if you must) ...The Outback wasn't even in existence.
The Cotton Bowl was OK but it was over at 3...

But Then We Bought Pizza for the Big 4 Baby! Alot of Pizza...Hell, the whole neighborhood would be there.....Then we would bring in the TV with the Antenna's so we could watch two at one time..

And guess what...They all played on the same day!!! New Years Day Meant something.

To hell with all those black eyed peas and Collard Greens... (Show me the money)

We wanted to watch College Football. We pulled for underdogs...We switched channels to make sure we didn't miss anything....

We culled the collard greens and the blackeyed peas.....(We don't need no stinking money)

There was No Utah...No Cincinnati...No BS..or Bcs..! You played to get in those bowls...Your league championship didn't dictate it...

I miss those days...

The BCS has ruined the bowls. New Years day used to be about watching some great bwol games. All the big bowls were on. Now they have spread them out over the next few weeks - plus we get games like UGA vs. Hawaii.

If the Iowa-South Carolina game isn't proof that there are too many bowls then I don't know what is.

Please don't give me the "extra practice time is good for teams" either b/c somehow this team got worse with 4 weeks to prepare.

I agree with what you said, but the outback bowl has always been a staple of the new years day bowls (I am the same age as you b/c I looke to make sure you weren't older than me)...it was always the 11:00 game...it used to be called the hall of fame bowl. But I agree with all sentiments here...the BCS has greatly devalued the other bowl games and has given fans very little in return...the bcs is a failure

If you notice hardly any of these lower tier bowls are sold out anymore. That is exactly what needs to happens. Hopefully we will see more and more people loose interest and these money hungry sponsors will get fed up b/c they are not not seeing a big enough return. Then some kind of playoff system with finally be in sight. It will not happen over night but maybe this is a beginning. Just a thought...

I vaguely remember the Hall of Fame bowl. Didn't put 2 and 2 together.

No....... actually we would have lost 52-10 without the extra practice!

^^ grin

Seriously though I have not watch but a handful of games - just not into this year I was slightly intrigued with the Penn State SoCal game yesterday but could really give a care about the others outside Carolina.

Back in tha day there were some good match ups and about 15 bowls with top teams having 7+ wins not 6-6 with conference bowl ties in give you a million dollar payout - ridiculous.

feel the same way....I've only watched a few minutes of a hand full of games, and thats including ours. This bowl schedule is stupid and ridiculous.

68 teams make bowl games. 65 basketball teams make the NCAA tournament.
Get rid of about 20 bowls and drop the conference tie-ins. If a team's not in the top 30, they shouldn't be in a bowl.
