In Greenville - Skins - It's been a long time since I've had one but it was so good.
In Columbia - Jimmy's Hot Dogs - Hands down the best hot dog in columbia. Maybe the best in the state. It just a little gas station place off of two notch road accross from the brickyard but they have awesome hot dogs (and chili).
In Charleston - Jack's Cosmic Dog - Technically Mt. Pleasant, but Jack's is becoming one of my favorites as well.

I've been eating Hot Dogs from Rush's since I moved down here. They're not that great, but all the other places people told me to try (said they were the best in Columbia), like Sandy's, Hot Dog Heaven, Zesto's etc. . . . Have been a big disappointment.
Also, on the line of Hot Dogs:
Anyone know of a place here in Columbia that has good Sausage Dogs?
Kilbosa, Smoked Sausage, doesn't really matter. I've been making my own for a few years, but would like to find a really good place where you can buy them.

Jimmy's Mart is definately the spot for the best hot dog. Jimmy's a good guy too.

I like Ricky's and Boots and Sonnys in Spartanburg because the chili is so good (heavy pepper flavored). The same family started both of these restaurants.
The people who own Holmes Hotdogs in Acardia have pretty good hotdogs but they are the nicest people have have clean, cool looking place.

I'm not sure how anyone couldn't like Sandy's hot dogs. I love them and usually get 2 super dogs (1/3 lb) when I go. You can even buy them by the box (50) and use them for tailgating. :woo:
Believe it or not another place that has good dogs is Five Guys. They cut them open and lay them flat on the grill. I think they use Nathans hot dogs? Try one of their bacon dogs (hot dog with bacon). Delicious. The bad thing is they don't serve chili.
I also buy Johnsonville Stadium franks at the grocery store. They're about the size of a Sandy's super dog. Throw 'em on the grill or griddle and you're set!

Probably just my taste, but I had the Superdogs from Sandy's twice, and I didn't really care for them at all.
I don't usually eat Hot Dogs with Grilled franks myself. I do grill them now and then, but when I do, I inject them with some whistishire sauce and usually just eat them off the grill, or eat them on buns with Peppers and Onions (like sausage dogs).
When I make Hot Dogs, I have a special way I make my Chilli, and I boil (well, not really boil. . .it's more like putting them in near boiling water for about 15-20 minutes) the weinners.

I make a pretty mean hotdog. Cooked in a skillet with onions add a slice of bacon, little bit of relish, mustard, ketchup, cheese. Toasted bun. No chili. It's pretty good.

Here in Florence the best hot dog is at the Sundae House on West Palmetto street. http://sundaehouse.net/
At the beach the best hot dog is at Sam's Corner period! I am a little biased as a member of my family owns it.

I agree. WeenieHeads isn't bad either in Spartanburg. Ricky's is my favorite though in the area. There's a good one in Wellford at the light near the landfill and in Lyman across from Food Lion (I can't think of the name of either).

Don't even waste you time ordering a hot dog from Rush's. Get yourself the Chili Cheeseburger basket and throw some vinigar on those fries!

My grandfather passed away Jan of 99 but he worked at the brickyard over 40 years as a foreman. Back in the day, all the guys from the brickyard would walk across the street and get some lunch. My grandfather told Jimmy one day that he needed to start selling hot dogs so he went out and bought a hot dog steamer. Didn't even know how to wrap them up. My granddad had to show him. That's how it all started and he's been selling hot dogs for decades now. He still tells me that story everytime I stop by. If you sit at the booths by the wall, there is still a picture of Jimmy and my grandfather hanging on the wall. Great guy!
I've also had my fair share of Sam's Corner's hot dogs (lived in Garden City for 3 summers during college). They aren't bad either if you want a late night meal while listening to the music on the pier.

gross. i've had a few of them, most recently in charlotte. their prepackaged ones you get in the stores are better than fresh. i've never been impressed by them, honestly i think its all b/c of the name.
skins is pretty good, granted i've only eaten there once, when i lived in anderson...my mom wasn't too happy my friends parents took me there, she hates that place. i don't know why. but it was still a good hot dog.
but my vote?
Holmes- Spartanburg
best hot dogs i've ever had. beats out rickys and sonnys by a landslide! my mom took me there one day after a day of shopping (a rarity for us). Told me this was one of her all time favorite places to eat. chilli cheese dog & a glass bottle of cheerwine for me please!

I have done that several times my man.
I either get a couple of hot dogs or a Chilli Cheeseburger basket from the one on Garners Ferry Road.
And viniger on the fries is a "Got To" Thang !

Never cared for Skins...
My fave place is a local gas station/mini-mart called Durham's. Best hotdogs around for me because of their chili. Of course I normally only put mustard and chili on my hot dogs!

My vote for today would go to Hamburger Joe's in North Myrtle Beach (or Garden City)

damn...Nice call...I loved this place when I was in school and loved their dawgs...There was another place that was a hole in the wall after the Cherry Rd/321 split on the right. Best Hot Dog all-time...It was a sketchy as hell looking place that only a college kid would venture...
Here in Cola, the best all time-I would go with Eds Hotdogs(it closed down about 10 yrs ago)
Now, you can't go wrong with Rush's...Nice simple hot dog with good chili and just enough diced onions.
5 Guys has a helluva good dawg with cheese and bacon that you can add 50 different things if you want to.

Didn't see your post earlier.....Ricky and Sonny are brothers......got their recipe from their dad. Then they had a falling out and opened separate restaurants. I wouldn't give a nickel for either dog!
Years ago I did a morning radio show in Spartanburg and did an on-air "search" for the best hot dog. I proclaimed Holmes the hot dog capital of the upstate. Did several remotes out there, and did a few Dorman pregame shows from there too. I think since then, Joel has turned it all over to his sister Treva, but it is one fantastic hot dog.
One of the best I've ever had was in Elberton, GA, at a little place called Whitney's. It's right on the square there in the middle of town. The chili has beans of some kind in it. They pile it so high with chili and cheese that you have to eat it with a fork. If you're ever down that way, you should give it a try.

:woo:The Blue Top in Graniteville, SC makes a good hot dog! Their cheeseburgers are also pretty good too!
The Old Dixie Lee in Bath, SC on the Jefferson Davis Hwy, used to make the best hot dogs and foot long hot dogs this side of heaven, back when Miss Lee ran the place. That lady sure could cook!
That was back in the Sixties and Seventies!

I know what you mean.....but let me point you to a good place. There is a little store at the corner of South Main and Pennsylvania Avenue in Greer. Two little old ladies make them and they are really good. It's just a small convenience store...you can barely turn around in it, but they know how to make a good hot dog. The Clock, Pete's, and the other Greek joints are OK, but these are really good.

Spartanburgs World Famous "The Beacon". I wouldn't recommend eating there often, lotsa grease. It's an experience going there, The cooks start yelling at you when you walk in the door.
I hate boiled weiners, roast the hell out of them.
JL Toppers is really good on Woodruff Rd. in Greenville. Great Fries.
If and/or when you venture outside of South Carolina and want to know where to get a good hot dog, I can give you a few suggestions. In Manhattan, go to Gray's Papaya or Papaya King; in Chicago, go to the Navy Pier; in the Los Angeles area, go to Pink's; in Boston, go to Speed's (there's one at Faneuil Hall and they also sell them @ Fenway); and in Atlanta, go to The Varsity. The original one is in downtown Atlanta, but there are 3 others in the Atlanta metro area, and 2 in Athens (one of those being a Varsity, Jr.). All of these hotdogs tastes differently, but they are all very delicious.

If you are in Charlotte you need to go to Byrum's General Store. I hated hot dogs but they have one with chili, slaw, mustard and onions that is out of this world and they are like 2 for 3 bucks or something. It is a hole in the wall for sure. It is actually more of a bait and tackle store right off of 485 at the 160 exit heading towards Gastonia....exit 3 or something I think.

You guys might laugh, but honestly, Five Guys is a great spot for hot dogs as well. They are high quality, all beef dogs, grilled just like their burgers. Definitely an excellent place to grab a hot dog when you want something other than a burger.
