Hate 'em, love 'em or just so-so for you? Where is your favorite place to eat them? How do you like them best? Fried, steamed or raw.... it doesn't matter to me. I have had the pleasure to taste them from Louisiana to Florida up to the Chesapeake Bay. Love to put them raw in a Bloody Mary and let em soak.My family loves to make oyster dressing during the holidays and special occasions.Years ago there was a place off Folly Rd. in Charleston called " Bowen's Island". Oysters were small creek oysters but real sweet with a great salty flavor. It was an old cinderblock building at the end of a dirt road, couple of dogs hung out on the porch, and old newspapers(to line the tables) stacked to head high. When I first went there in 1974 they had a shrimp room and an oyster room. If your party wasn't all in agreement as what they were gonna eat, they could not sit together.Had a open fire at the end of the oyster room with a hole in the ceiling for the smoke, when your oysters were ready to come off the fire they scooped them with a coal shovel and walked to your table and dumped them.It was customary to sign your name on the wall after dining also.It burned down several years ago but was rebuilt with a new owner, Anybody have a update?

I used to live at Folly many years ago. I would frequently stop at Bowens. If you wanted the oyster roast you had to go in a special room. No one else could go in. "Oyster eaters only in oyster room!" a sign over teh door read. Old Mr. Bowen would chop wood all day for the fire. He would go in and shovel oysters on the fire and then onto the picknik tables in the room. You wojuld just sit and stuff your face. Mrs. Bowen would run the front fry room. They died and the place closed up. A nephew bought it. He had an odd couple of degrees. Law and ministry I think. A few years back he decided to run for office. US Senate maybe. I don't tink that the pwers that be took kindly to it. Somehow the newly rebuilt place burned down in the middle of the night.
BTW, I had a mess of fried oysters at a local Indian River joint here last night. They were excellent!

That's a shame to hear. I lived on Folly twice during the late 90.s and early 2000's. We would eat at Bowens quite frequently, it was also a good place to rent out for parties, especailly that large screened in porch area- threw several engagement parties and 1 New Years Eve party there.

Hate 'em. Best place I ever had them: McGarvey's in Annapolis MD as a shooter with tabasco instead of tomato juice.

Raw, on a cracker, with some horsradish, tobasco sauce, all day long you cant go wrong.
I,ve had em many places but we got a place down here called rhineharts seafood. its a place you write all over the walls, your food comes on a paper plate, plastic spoons and forks, and a lot of booze. its a great place if you like that type of place.
I would have loved to go to that place that burned down.

Thanks Gamecock Girl, man am I happy to know they are still in existence.I knew that Robert had taken over after his Grandmother, but thought it was kaput. My best memory while dining there was back in the 90s and it snowed out on the island but not intown. I asked if they could serve me that afternoon outside where I could watch the snow. They dropped my oysters on the stump where they split firewood as I watched the snow cover the marsh. As the snow front came in I saw a rainbow arcing over the creek just ahead of the storm. Never had I seen anything like it before, beautiful. All by myself for 2 hours watching this, eating the best oysters on the planet witha couple of cold beers in almost complete silence.Thought I shoulda been in church...lol. Also if you go, be careful when it is a full moon. Sometimes the high tide will come over the road and you might have to wait to get back to Folly Rd.Great excuse for more kobeerz.

I frequent Bowen's Island a lot. Took my parents there a couple of years ago before the old building burnt down. Dad loved it but I thought my mom was going to have a heart attack! It's been up and running again for a while now. They just use the dock area as the place to order. Still use the outdoor back porch as seating area and they also use the covered area at the end of the dock as well. It still has an amazing view at sunset and probalby the best oysters you'll ever eat! I've always that it was "odd" that the place burnt down while the guy was trying to run a campaign??? If you ever make it back down to the coast let me know. The beers will be on me (my family is originally from the newberry/prosperity area - still got a bunch of distant's up that way)!

A big steaming bowl of oyster stew with some melted butter and a toddy of sherry floating on top ain't a bad deal either!
I only like 'em steamed. Bowens Island was one of the best places I had them. Now my favorite kind are the kind cooking in my backyard! Where I can walk out, eat oysters, drink beer with friends, and relax.

Wintzells in Mobile.

A&B is great! A tad pricey these days though. I remember going there as a kid when it was less uppity than it is now.
I had a large plate of fried oysters this past weekend and they were wonderful. I hope to get my fill in these next weeks before the summer interregnum!
