I used to own a tarantula when I was in middle school. However, I never took care of him. One day I came back and found half of his legs gone. There was also a part of his leg in front of him. Turns out, he was eating his own legs because I never fed him!
Other than that though... just a dog, a few fish, and a cat.

Not too unusual of a pet... but a funny and strange story still!
When I was in the sixth grade my science teacher had two hampsters in his classroom named Jack and Jill. Every weekend a student got to take the two home and care for them until monday. Then came my turn.
It wasn't hunger because she had plenty of food, it had to be hormonal. I awoke sunday morning to find that Jill had eaten more than half of Jack. She ate him head first, the only part of Jack that was left was his hind quarters!
I learned a lesson very early about thinking quickley on your feet, imagine explaining that to your classmates monday morning!

I had 2 pigeons that I raised from chicks. They were pretty stupid as far as birds go. but I could call them and they would fly to me. Their names were " shit" and " head".

I also have an 8 month old Anery Corn Snake named Draco. She's the same as this one (markings) except the Redish Brown color has been
bred out. So basically she's like a Black and White image of this one.

Corns are notoriously gentle snakes. . . probably the most docile of any bred of snake. They'll stirke in the wild when they're cornered, but once you pick them up, they calm down very quickly and adapt to captivity very easily.
This one was wild caught, and it took me about a week before she stopped striking at me, but I haven't had it so much as even attempt it in the last 7 months.

When my wife and I were dating, we stopped at a Waffle House in Anderson on our way back from a Braves Game one night, and there was only us and one other guy in the resturaunt. I noticed the waitress kept looking over at the guy sitting next to the window, and telling him to "Go Get It". She said that about 4 times, and I was thinking a drug deal was gonig down or something
This guy goes outside, and comes back in with a Skunk and I thought my wife was going to tear that place down getting back to the rear of the store. . . the guy started laughing and said it had been descented and he had had it for several months. That thing was cool as hell.

Wow, Spurt... We are complete opposites. I am terrified of the most smallest and tamed types of snakes; any snake at all freaks me out. Yet, I am completely comfortable with scorpions, spiders, roaches, and every other living thing in existence. I once woke up when I was camping once with a scorpion on my chest. It didn't startle me at all, but another guy found a snake in front of his tent and I sprinted the other direction.

I had a few slider turtles when I was in high school and in college...but they eventually got pretty large and I set them free. One of them I put a wide red rubberband around his shell and set him free in a local pond...went back a few times and never saw him. Started out the size of a half dollar.
My brother has a Rainbow Boa in our apartment now.
Before the snake, my brother had a ferret and it was one of the coolest pets ever.
I had a Guinea Pig as well...named Gus...and he had a heart attack (I think). I got home one day and his leg was stuck in the grate of the cage...figured he panicked.
Also, I HATE spiders. I don't mind snakes much at all...I can usually spot them out...spiders are sneaky little bastards and I don't trust them at all. Ewh...gives me a funny feeling thinking about them.

The captive bred snakes are extremly gentle. . . . If you decide to get one, wait until a reptile show comes into your area. . . you can buy them from reputable breeders at about 1/3 the cost of one the same size at a pet store.
There's a show coming to Columbia at the Hejaz Temple in three weeks, and I'm planning on going just to check out the snakes. . .I'd like to have a few more, but promised the wife I'd stop at two.
And I know how you feel about waiting until you move out. . . I have wanted one of these since I first saw one 40 years ago. My mom and dad wouldn't have it, and my first wife told me she'd take the kids and leave if I bought one.
I had to wait until I was 54 but it was worth the wait.

I honestly think it's due to what you saw in other people's reactions, or to
something that happened connecting to either of those events in your
childhood that cause you to develop certain reations like that.
I had an uncle that lived on a big farm between Fountain Inn and
Simpsonville, and I used to love going to visit him out there. . . . He
use to take me and my cousin out in the woods with BB Guns, and let us
"Pretend" hunt and would explain gun safety, and how to aim / shoot and
all that good stuff.
We ran up on a black snake one time near his barn, when he was letting
us do some target shooting, and he told me . . ."Never kill a snake around
your house or storage area" Told me those things keep the mice and
lizards away from your house and barn. I watched him go over and pick
it up with a stick and move it inside the barn and we went on out to
Shoot. . . . . Since then I've been facinated with them. I used to catch
Green Snakes, Garters, Black Snakes with some friends of mine, and we'd
keep them for a short time and let them go.
I had a large black spider crawl up my leg when I was drying off after
taking a shower when I was about 6-7 years old after my mom had told
me about someone in the family being bitten by a Black Widow a couple
of weeks earlier, and had to go to the hospital. . . . . That Spider looked
like a triantula to me, because I was so scared, and after I knocked that
thing off my leg, and ran off screeming. . . I felt things crawling on me
for the next couple of days ! . . . .Have never liked Spiders and bugs since
that day.

You're dead on. My mom was always scared of snakes and passed her reactions on to me. I have had a few bad experiences with snakes during my life too. When I was 9, my dad was digging holes to put up a clothesline in our backyard. I was helping him, and he stuck the post hole digger in the ground a few times. On one strike, a slew of baby copperheads came scurrying out of the ground. My dad screamed at me to run inside because they came out so fast and I was very close to the spot. I remember how scared that made me because of my dad's reaction. I also once saw a snake in a creek eat my golf ball when I was about 10 or 11. That one was a water moccassin.

My wife had a deer that would come in the house and everything. The Momma deer got ran over by a bulldozer of her grandpa's while he was clearing land. They named it "Buck" but come to find out, buck was a girl. They put a orange vest on it when it would go outside and everything. They had it for a few years, but finally nature ran its course and male deer started showing up at the edge of the yard. She finally ran off with them. I thought that was too cool

Wow. . . cool mom !
Ball Pythons, and Boas are nice when they're young. Move very slowly, and will wrap aournd your arm or wrist, and sit there like nothing in the world bothers them.
Corns are a little faster and tend to pick a spot and go. After they tolerate being held, they move a little slower. . . . . Boas and Pythons
develop an attitude when they get older though. They can actually
break the skin with a bite even though they're non-venomous. I like
holding the younger ones, but you have to really like those snakes to
raise and keep them.

I've run up on a couple of moccassins playing golf. They get real scared
and will flash their white mouth to let you know to "Back Off"
Takes a lot to make them strike, but when they do, they mean business.
If I can find it, I'll post a picture of what I ran up on playing golf one
time !
Was playing down in Edisto a couple of years ago, and there was a
water hazzard on a Par 5 18th hole, right behind the cabin where my
wife and I were staying. I walked over to where my ball was hit on
the other side of the hazzard, and there was this 8' long Really Dark
alligator sitting up on the bank sunning !!!!
After I snapped a picture of it, I told the guys I was playing with I was going to drop one on the OTHER SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY and hit from there. . . . .they didn't have a problem with that.

I think this is what I saw a couple with at Myrtle Beach with one time.
We were over at Broadway at the Beach, and noticed a crowd around
a couple of people. When we got up to them, we noticed that there
was a young couple there that had a couple of animals with them that
looked similar to this one. . the guy had one, and the girl had one. They
were letting people pet and play with them. . . .the ones I saw were
a little smaller than this one, but looks a lot like what I saw. !!

ya'll are going to think I'm nuts, but I used to keep venomous snakes for a while...
...I had several species of non-venomous as well, but at one point I had about 12 snkaes. The craziest thing I had was a rhinocerous viper, but I also had two species of rattlesnake, a copperhead, and a cottonmouth...
...the wife made it clear under no certain terms that the venomous snakes would all have to go (which I had no problem with), for a long time I kept a California kingsnake and a Honduran milksnake, unfortunately I don't have pics handy, but I'll try and dig them up

There's a big market for "Hot" snakes in the US. I love going to reptile shows and looking at them, but this old boy has his limits. I respect them in the wild, but I don't want to get within their "Business" district.
Gaboon Vipers are real popular right now, which tells me there are way too many people out there with death wishes. . . .those things are HIGHLY venomous, and have 2" fangs to "Make Their Point Clear".
Beautiful snakes, but as long as they stay in their containers, I can
enjoy them from afar !

Have no clue. . . . they really are beautiful creatures, but having one in
your house as a pet !?!?!?!?!
I was reading a book once about raising snakes as pets. . . the guy that
wrote it was very good at general information about snakes, but there
was one chapter about caring for and keeping Hot Snakes. . . . .Loved
the warning he posted in the first page of that chapter.
He said he always gives this advice to people who want to get into
keeping venomous snakes of any kind:
"Buy or catch a non venomous Watersnake. . .these are very aggressive
non-venomous snakes that do not like being handled. . I suggest to get
a Black Racer or Red Bellied Watersnake. . .these are the most aggressive
of that group. . . . . Keep this snake for about 8-10 months. Feed it,
clean it's cage, and do the normal things you have to do with any snake
and everytime this snake strikes you, get a post it note, and write on it
I COULD BE DEAD RIGHT NOW ! . . . Or, IF I'M NOT DEAD, I HAVE JUST
SPENT SEVERAL DAYS, IN THE HOSPITAL AND FORCED MY INSURANCE
COMPANY TO PAYOUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SAVE ME FROM
DYING" !!
He said then "At the end of that 8-10 month period, look at and read all
the post it notes, and if you still want to go buy and raise a venomous
reptile . . . .BE MY GUEST" !

My roomate has a tarantula that molted last year , so now he has 2, yikes! The coolest pet I ever had by far was my ferret. I called him FerretKahn just cause it sounded cool. He was the craziest pet. The dogs never could figure out what he was, other than a moving toy. He would run up in the couch and poke his head outta the corners and stand on 2 legs and just plain act sketchy. I left him when I left my ex and I still really miss him. As a kid we had a guyinnie pig.
Also - used to go to the pond and catch tadpoles, bring them home, put them in a fuishbowl along with some sand and stuff and watch them turn into frogs. Then release them.

I know, but I don't really miss her.
I tell my wife now everytime we go to a pet store, "That's my next Pet" !
Ferrets are cool as hell. . . My wife says they look like elongated rats to her, and she actually has a phobic Reaction to rodents, so I wouldn't
do that to her, but if it weren't for that, I'd have bought me a Ferret a long time ago !

Next time tell your wife about how a mongoose kills rodents and snakes and then tell her thats what a ferret is. As long as the scent glands are gone, they are awesome pets. Don't ever leave them alone with a Jack Russel though, the house and you, will be gone!

Me with VooDoo, my older Corn Snake.

I also have an 8 month old Anery Corn Snake named Draco. She's the same as this one (markings) except the Redish Brown color has been
bred out. So basically she's like a Black and White image of this one.
I love snakes. I'd like to have a rattlesnake. Fatten it up, then eat it. I always pick them up when I find one.

I had a ferrett for a little over a year. I ended up giving to a lady that had 8 other ferretts. I didn't have the time to mess around with cleaning his cage all the time and my dog wanted to eat him every time he saw him

I keep a Tater locked in a cage in my basement. I feed him stale Fritos and Nestea twice a week. He's really quite docile, but that might be b/c I hang newspaper articles of our baseball wins against them just outside the cage just out of his reach.

A ferret wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell with my pet.

One of my friends keeps venomous snakes and he had a gaboon for a little bit. At the moment, the worst things he has are a Canebreak Rattlesnake and a Diamondback. He has various other snakes, too. One of them is an Emerald Tree Boa - this thing has the fangs of a venomous snake but no venom glands. These things are like 2 inches long and look painful as hell...and she's got a bad attitude.
Personally, I like the Gold Eyelash Viper:

I really can't understand why people would want to keep Hot Snakes, but at the same time, I understand the attraction, and in a sense I can admire their actions. Snakes are not a normally kept animal in most homes, and it takes a person who just really likes herps to keep and raise them.
I just wanted a Corn Snake since I first saw one, and when I finally got one I am just now understanding what I've missed not having one for the past 40 years. . . . . . . . I love watching snakes of all kinds, but I respect the venomous ones from a distance. People who buy and raise them are taking a big risk in doing so, especially if there are other family members in the house to consider, but having wanted a Corn so badly and finally getting one (now two), I can relate to wanting a snake for those who really like them. . . . Even though I won't go there as far as Hots are concerned, I understand someone's want for them.
I do think there are people out there who buy them just because they think it's "Cool" to have one. . . . NOT THE RIGHT REASON. But if it's just a love of snakes (even though dangerous), I understand that.
Nice Looking Redtail BTW !!!

Spoke to a lady who had an Amelanistic gopher snake a couple of weeks ago, and she let me hold it for a while. . . much faster than the corn snake, but once I got used to their speed, I fell in love with the thing.
Really beautiful snake, and I came real close to buying it. . . but I resisted the temptation.
It was exactly like this one

I used to have one of those too. Damn, are they ugly; and they smell bad too. So, I released it back into the trailer park...
