Who has the best?
I had some at East Bay Crab Shack here in Charleston last night and they were pretty amazing. Know of any other good places to get Crab Legs?

Joe's is just a chain and they are the same everywhere. You can do better. MUCH better.
Blue crabs. Plentiful all along the east coast. Try a mess of garlic blue crabs some time!
Stone crabs. Quintessential Florida. Only one lobster sized claw is harvested. The crab will regenerate it. They are cooked immediately and then chilled. They are usually served with a mustard based dipping sauce followed by key lime pie. And beer. Lots of beer! Joe's in Miami ships them all over. Check out some pics: http://www.joesstonecrab.com/index.html
Typical crab legs. You are mostly used to snow crab legs as they are the cheapest. Give some of the better ones a try. King crab legs are much larger and have more meat. Dungeness crab legs aer a bit smaller but also a tad sweeter.
Soft shell crab. Hey, things get crowded inside that shell as the crab grows! The answer? They molt. Just hop out of the small shell and grow a new larger one. You have about a 4 day window to grab the little sucker while it is naked. Just cut off the face, squeeze out the brains, scoop out the gills and the remaining whole crab is edible! Breaded and fried they make super sandwiches! They can also be sauteed or grilled. You don't boil/steam them like hard shells though.

I usually just catch mine... but the Crazy Crab (or is it Krazy Krab?) in Hilton Head is really good.

Watermen's, Higgins, or Ed's. Best Crabs on East Coast. The Crab legs are incredible.
You can order Watermen's online (pretty good crab cakes):

King Crab is quite a bit tougher to get the meat from than Snow.

The Original Charleston Crab house (James Island) used to have the best I've ever eaten, but the past couple of years, they've really disappointed.
The single best serving of Crab legs I've ever eaten in my life came off a Shoney's Buffett (again, in Charleston).
My wife and I were going through there about 3 years ago on our way home from Edisto, and were trying to figure out where we wanted to stop and eat. . .we both just decided to go by Shoney's a grab something quick and head home.
They were having a Seafood Buffet that evening and I don't know what it was they that made them any different but those were the best Crab legs I've ever tasted. .. . I almost exploded from eating so many, but couldn't stop !!

Good post.
For years I have made a promise to myself that no matter how good it sounded, I would never order soft shell crab again. I just don't like it.
I recommend Crustacean in San Francisco for their garlic Dungeness crabs.

I would have to disagree. Not a big Joe's fan. The best places are on the coast somewhere, don't have an exact place in mind right now but anywhere at the beach will give you the freshest and best crab legs.

Anywhere you get king crab or snow crab, you are getting it frozen thus it is all the same (unless you are in Alaska). The same is also usually true for cold water lobster, unless you boil it alive yourself.

Well ya'll missed the sale at Piggley Wiggley. $2.99/lb for snow crabs. We ate a bunch on Tuesday.
If you don't know how to cook em you should learn. It is very simple.
When you can sit on your back porch listening to good music of your choice, enjoying a great wine, pigging out on crab at 1/4th price of a restaraunt, and finish up with a good cigar without people trying to shuffle you off into some outside corner, why go anywhere else. The only thing I miss is some of those young Charleston girls not walking around and that only gets me in trouble with the lovely bride.

We just had a bunch of snow crabs last week. My wife makes the best. Dip them in garlic butter and have a cold beer! Holy Crap! Now I'm hungry. The key is learning how to crack the leg open and pull the meat out in one piece.
