REALLY digging that design Cola. Who wants to take the lead in pushing this through Pastides? It would probably generate a decent amount of revenue for the school if they went about it the right way.

Multiple colors adds complexity and either requires a very high-end cutter to produce or a vinyl printer (think bumper stickers). Again, unless that was made a pretty fair size, it would be super tough to weed the details out, and especially that thin inner oval.

Just curious how much experience you have with vinyl cutters? Wouldn't be difficult at all with the capabilities of cutter printers now. Even if some area was printed onto the vinyl and the rest was cut...many ways to accomplish a sticker like this. Most don't stack vinyls an top of another anymore to produce a multi-color vinyl sticker.

I actually envisioned some of that area of the sticker not being present in actual vinyl form...being "blank".

Example maybe:

A decent amount. I've got a small drag-knife cutter at the house, with plans to upgrade to a nicer tangential cutter in the future. I use FlexiSIGN Pro 10.x software to perform the cutting.

What cutter would you recommend for this? I'd like to know what out there can cut that fine inner oval, regardless of color count.

Alright, so I cut a test unit of Cola's design. The only modifications I made were 1) removing the squares beneath the gates (as Cola also did), 2) eliminating the impossibly thin inner ring, and 3) replacing '84 with my own graduation year of '08:

http://i.imgur.com/x76VTlA.jpg

As you can see, this is a unit done at a 6" scale. This is WAY bigger than the Clemson decals we've all seen. The ultimate problem is this: the design is simply too complex and has too many narrow parts in it to cut at any size that most people would want to purchase and put on their vehicle. For instance, the "1801" text (on a 6" decal) measures only 3/4" wide and 1/4" tall. The number "1" alone is 1/16" by 1/8". I don't care what cutter you have, you simply cannot cheat physics. Now, you can continue removing elements of the design to make it easier to cut, but this would further water down the image. Altering it also means that it is no longer the official university logo, and so it would be unlikely that Pastides or anyone else would sign off on it.

I think the only feasible option for this particular design would be to make it a printed decal (bumper sticker).

Love cola's too.

Didn't like GTs as much. But would def buy colas or Goza.

I actually made two more: one using the tree from the University Gates, and one using a standard palmetto tree I cut. I cut both at 4" tall (which I feel is the right size for these), and the tree from the University Gates is still impossibly thin where the palm fronds come together and form V's in the middle. These, though, are very much doable at 4":

I would take that design from Cola on the back of my truck in a heartbeat. One thing about Clemson's is that it is more of a solid sticker type. If these were made as Cola explained, with a good bit of the decal being "blank", then it really won't cover a lot of your back glass. I could deal with a 6" decal if that were the case. If it were a 6" sticker, I would be having no part of it.

One thing also. If this gets pushed to Pastides, and he sees that it has enough of a push among alumni, then they can get the right people involved to design something that would be acceptable.

The onyx dinner rings were not cheaper. Trust me. It is the ring I have.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to knock the decision of going the cheaper route- those rings are crazy expensive, I still don't even have mine yet! I just assumed they may have been cheaper than the official option.

No worries. Just giving information.

They are also much more fragile. I had to send mine back to have the band engraving redone as they did it wrong, and in the process of them fixing the band, the onyx shattered. I got an entirely new ring out of the deal.

I like Cola's design the best, though I understand Goza's concerns about cutting. The problem with the Block C and palmetto logo is that it's not particularly recognizable. Without the bird, the C by itself is somewhat bland. However, this simplicity also makes it easier to cut.

Goza, how about the Block C with the "Gates Palmetto" in the center? How would that look?

Or, to hybrid both ideas, just do the oval from Cola's idea, and then put the Palmetto and Gates, but no 1801 banner. Or just the gates palmetto. I think we're on to something here.

I'm the first to admit his design is--at least conceptually--the best. It's really beautiful and makes great use of the space. I seem to be the only one around here with a vinyl cutter though, so I'm just trying to point out the impossibility of this design at sizes comparable to the Clemson decals.

I actually did make one of these (mentioned above) but didn't post the pic. The problem was the tree's fronds. I can attempt a second unit sans 1801 banner and with the gates added back, but I fear those will be the next problem at this size.

So the Clemson decals are about 3" tall?

This makes a lot of sense. I was too caught up in trying to make something similar to Clemson's that I didn't really step back and think of it big picture like that.

Thoughts? Another 4" prototype:

Man all of these are great. I'll handle trying to get some of these to Pastides. Let's try to narrow it down to our overall two favorites.

As for the one above I think what makes Clemson's so great is it's classic simple look. Although that one is bad ass I think for a unifying alumni symbol it should be a more traditional and classic look.

The block C and the gates are great. They would need to be all white in my opinion.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the alumni decals that Clemson has...is nothing official or related to the actual university. They are just made and sold by a fan store (similar to G&B Traditions) called Tigertown Graphics. Right?

Don't think someone would need Pastides blessing if they wanted this to work.

Love this and the gates equally.
The block C is third but I still definitely like it.

Would purchase.

The gates are a registered trademark so you would have to get permission from somewhere.
