28 Year Old Women Set to Try Out with NFL Teams

Definitely not what I expected her to look like....

Former soccer player set to make history as first woman in the NFL

A 28-year-old woman from New York is set to become the first female to be given a try out for the NFL.

Lauren Silberman had never kicked anything more than a soccer ball in an organised game before she started practicing long-range field goals. Now she has been given a chance at an NFL regional scouting combine on Sunday at the New York Jets' training facility in Florham Park, New Jersey.

It follows the success of Wisconsin-born Nascar driver Danica Patrick, 30, who became the first woman to start the Daytona 500 on pole position. Patrick's achievement sparked predictions she could become the first woman to win the 'Great American Race' in Florida, but she eventually finished eighth.

Speaking about her chances of getting the NFL call, Silberman said: 'I am working hard to prepare but I am also realistic about my chances. 'I hope my willingness to put myself out there inspires others to seize opportunities and challenges. The support from around the world has been so heartening.'
Her goal for the weekend is to kick perfect 60-yard field goals.

However, the odds are against her - scouts are likely to want to see her connect on extra points and chip-shot field goals with some consistency before moving on to the heavy kicking.

While a female has never played in the NFL, if the gender breakthrough did happen, it most likely would be at kicker.
As a grad student at MIT, Silberman wrote her Master's thesis on how college and pro athletes can use video games to improve their athletic performance.

She would definitely choose the extra point

At she will have one thing in common with the rest of the kickers not a football player. I can't stand a kicker, the most unathletic position on the field can become the most valuable.

They will never sign a woman. Would be way to expensive having to build a women's locker room for 1 person.

That's what I'm thinking. Unless it was a female kicker who was The One, who could kick 60+ yard FG's with 100% accuracy, and who could could pinpoint 60+ yard punts with 100% accuracy.

I bet she's good at what she does and is a great athlete and person, but would she be SO much better than any male to make all the additional things worth it.

There are some on this board who feel homosexual players sharing a locker room with heterosexual players is perfectly ok. If so, then if a woman breaks through, then I guess she should use the same locker room, also.

We're talking about the Jets. They need all possible aid.

Homosexual players have been sharing the locker room with straight players since the NFL began.

Truth. I mean shit, the thing that got Cully in trouble started with a former Niners player being gay. They just don't come out while they're playing.. It would probably cost them their jobs and millions of dollars.

But the point is nobody knew.

If the player was out of the closet, the locker room would be incredibly uncomfortable. Just as it would be for a woman in the locker room full of guys.

And baseball players in the 1930's would have felt uncomfortable with a black player in the dugout, but that is not a justification for keeping them out.
