The Michael Roth Bullpen @ Carolina Stadium

I don't know if anyone else saw this, but I did a quick search and couldn't find a thread about it so delete if has been discussed.

Last night I saw on Twitter from Roth and from David Cloninger that the BOT voted to approve naming the Bullpen after Michael Roth.

Apparently a wealthy alumnus from Charlotte donated $100,000 to dedicate to the renaming of the bull pen for Roth. Thought it was a really cool honor.

Can't link any twitters because it is blocked at work but a quick search through Roth's twitter would bring it up.

(as a side note my first thought was that they should have showed some love for Matt Price since he is the one that came out of the pin

)

That's a pretty awesome gesture by that donor. Sure Roth appreciates it.

Nice. Michael is still showing love to Gamecock nation. His blog is witty.

They both spent time in the pin. Price 2.5 years. Roth 2 years.

Nice gesture...but I agree, should've been named after Price...name the dugout after Roth (guy had almost has much notariety for his dugout antics as his pitching).

I dont like naming the bullpen at all. Just put a cover over the pen and put the faces of our pitching greats on it. It can be like a pitching ring of honor.

Eventually, they should put a dang statue of the man outside the dang stadium, along with Price, Wingo, and Walker.

It was named for Roth not just because of what he did on the diamond, but also for what he did, and still does, off the diamond.

Roth's 29 will also be the next jersey we retire.

I know Roth is a great player person etc. and I'm not sure how often this actually happens, but it seems odd to me for a donor to give 100 000 with this contingency unless he had more connection with the player beyond being a fan and impressed with his results on the field.

A very valid point you make. It very well could be that Mr. Moore has more of a personal connection with Roth. He could be a close friend of the family, or the like.

Then that's odd to me with the university's hands pushed to do this to ensure the donation. I understand large buildings and recognition of the donors for this purpose but to essentially make the university name something for a player is bit much and actually cheapens the honor to me.

If I get 100 000 grand to donate, I want to name all the holding area at WB for disorderly conduct after Garcia.

shouldn't retire numbers. should have a ring of honor or we will end up with guy wearing 76 like the yankees. there are so many great players in our past and our future

I wish I had the money to start a USC baseball hall of fame at the stadium. have a building out on the plaza and induct the great players into the HOF for just baseball. This would leave the numbers available for use.

I can understand how it is somewhat putting some people off. I would say, however, that when the bag man comes in with 100k, it has got to be hard to say no. Now if the donor requested his name split with Darla Moore's or wanted "Chris Smelley field at WB" then that's particularly suspect. IMO the board probably let out a huge sigh when the donor wanted a bullpen named after a championship winning student-athlete.

That's my thoughts here. This situation worked out well because the request made sense and the player was deserving. However, it sets a precedent that with the right amount of cash the BOT is willing to listen. How much would it take to get the right to name the practice field?

The Michael Roth Memorial Bullpen at Ray Tanner Field at Carolina Stadium at Andrew Sorensen Athletic Complex at Spurrier Downs

Now at the Kyle Enders Memorial Concession Stand we're serving Arik Hempy-sized Burgers and Wingo Wings, at low, low Matt Price-s, it won't cost you a Marzillion dollars

Don't forget fans, the stadium is a No (Justin) Smoak-ing facility but you are more than welcome to light up in the Safe (Reese) Havens of Jackie Bradley Jr. Memorial Parking Deck, located adjacent to James Darnell Way across from the Neil Giesler Memorial Hot Dog Hut under the Bouknight Bleachers. And while you're on the way home have your picture taken next to the live rooster Gamecock Coop named for Blake Cooper, and snack on an ice-cold Pelzer Pop

Sigh. I always thought the best thing about our recent success is that we weren't going to spend any energy with frivolous bullshit statues and naming crap, we were just gonna collect titles. All that garbage is hype for fans to eat wholesale, I guess it has some meaning, somehow...

But I guess it could be worse, we could have some corporatized naming crap and we'd be playing at "Chick-Fil-A Chicken Field" (get it?)....

I'm happy if y'all are happy.

And I made it all the way through without a single Pankake joke.
