PC Gamer help

I need some help. Just built a computer and all seems to be great except for a few games. Crysis 3 being the main culprit, but a few others seem to have a little slow down and fps issues (Battlefield 3, Far Cry 3, etc.).

My rig is

3770-I7 cpu
Intel LGA1155 DDR3 1600 ATX MOBO
16 gig ram
2 geforce evga gtx 660 ti sli
Windows 8 (64 bit)

I know these games are pretty intense on any machine, but I'm literally getting 10,30 fps at the most on Crysis 3 on low. Something doesn't seem right. I know a little about computers but not enough apparently. Thanks for any tips or tricks.

Everything sounds just fine. Are your graphics drivers up to date? That's the most common problem I tend to see from people that tend to have the problem you described. Go here:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Also, you may want to download EVGA's tuning tool, Precision X.

http://www.evga.com/precision/

See what temps and clock speed you're getting from your two cards in SLI, and get back to me.

I have Precision X and Nvidia Experience downloaded. Ever since I went to SLI, Nvidia experience is basically useless, it says it can't optimize anything.

I have the latest gpu driver.

GPU temp is 43/27, Clock Speed 796/324 with Crysis 3 playing in background

Two things to consider: power and cooling.

What wattage is your power supply? Is it "just enough" or do you think you have power to spare? Many boards come with auxillary power inputs that you can run from the PSU to the board to give things like GPU's more juice.

If any gear is running hot, that could easily be leading to less than optimal performance as well (especially GPU & CPU).

Also - can you check RAM voltages, clock speeds and temp via the BIOS on your board?

What he said. Running anything less than 600W for your setup is going to be an instant bottleneck. Cooling seems alright. If your PSU is adequate, this is definitely an interesting case.

PSU is a thermaltake 850w. All bios are default settings. Did just bump the cpu up to 4.1 from 3.9 and a 1ghz bump on the gpu. Rosewill Thor case with some giant fans so cooling shouldn't be an issue either.

I dont know anything about computers but I just wanted to be included in the conversation with all the smart people, because the stuff ya'll are talking about is way over my head. Thanks for letting me chime in carry on.

The main culprits being ruled out, look at minor areas. What HD? What speed RAM? What monitor? My first guess is that this could be a WIN 8 problem. Can you dual boot or slip in a WIN 7 HD to check that?

HD is a Seagate 2tb, ram is 16(4x4) gb 1333 ghz PNY memory with heat sinks

Monitor def. needs a upgrade. Its a westinghouse I've had for about 5 years now. Fiance wants a touch screen but they are running 600 and aren't good for gaming. Gonna have to two screen it to serve all purposes.

The only copy of windows 7 I have is on my laptop so I can't slip a copy of windows 7 in there.

Re: PC Gamer help

In my professional opinion I would blame the driver first. More than likely due to the new OS. You may be stuck until a driver is released, if this proves to be the issue. You can try installing previous releases if they exist for your OS. The next possibility is the hard drive speed. With a single drive, I would recommend solid state for the newer high graphic intensive games. If you are set on mechnical drives I would recommend going to a RAID configuration if your motherboard supports it. The RAID configuration will provide twice the Read and Writes speeds to/from the disks as well as double the amount of buffering to disk.

Do you have any older, less demanding games that you could perhaps install and run as a test to compare against?

Something like Crysis 1 /2, Metro 2033, Rage, Elder Scrolls (or heck, even Quake 4 or Doom 3)?

When you start going down the road of drivers causing performance, yes, you can say it's the OS (I personally think Windows 8 runs fine) but drivers often get optimized over time for specific games, especially demanding ones like Crysis.

Are you controlling the graphical settings via the app / game itself, or from the nVidia Control Panel (which can be set to overwrite any in-game settings - i.e. you think you're trying to run "Low" in the game but nVidia Control Panel is hard set to something like 32x AA/AF).

The only thing I have set on Nvidia control panel is that it is in sli and I gave it a performance over quality slant while trying to figure out what was up in Crysis 3.

I will run fraps on Crysis 2 and tell you what I get.

Currently getting 15-25 on Rage, Highest Settings. Crysis 2 around 15, maybe 20 fps on extreme everything (DX11 pack and Hi Res Packs patched in as well).

What's the refresh rate on your Westinghouse? I've seen a lot of people miss the difference between 59 and 60hz and experience problems there. Also, have you tried running it with your CPU at stock? Something tells me your I7 isn't the bottleneck here, and overclocking can cause system instability if something isn't configured right.

Along with your FRAPS results, would you mind posting a DXDIAG log? Might help us get to the bottom of this easier.

Its 50-60 hz refresh rates. I'm gonna copy and paste the beginning of the dxdiag log. Let me know if you need more.

I had an texture issue as well as a fps issue with my video card, which isnt quite as good as yours, and an ATI to boot, but a friend of mine told me to go into the gpu control panel, which for ATI is the CCC (Not sure what it is for Nvidia off the top of my head), and reset everything to default. Worked like a charm, and hasnt screwed up since, even with me tweaking.

Hmmm. Have you tried running just one GTX and seeing how it works out? It could be the SLI. Your setup should be making Crysis cry the way it is.

I'm starting to think it has to be the driver. One GTX runs basically the same. I got the second gpu a day or two after I picked up Crysis 3. New drivers came out the night before Crysis 3 was released.

That was my first suspicion, but yours were up to date so I didn't think much of it. It's entirely possible the drivers are the problem.

Believe it or not, I'm actually running a 660Ti right now with those drivers, and I'm getting 60FPS in Metro and Skyrim with HD textures and a crap ton of particle effects. Your card is different than mine though, I'm assuming you're running 2 2GB cards in SLI? I've got just one 3GB. That's why these results are so confusing to me, because you should be running circles around my rig.

Try this update. Nvidia claims it's specially made for Crysis 3 and offers a 65% performance boost. Doesn't explain why your other ones are underperforming, but it's worth a shot.

Yeah, I'm running 2 660ti 2gb gpus. Anything is worth a shot but I'm pretty sure this is what I have set up already.
