Ryan Ripken

Was lookin at other threads about him but didnt see anything...but lookin like the kid isn't gonna be anything like his dad. It's a shame...I was so excited to get to meet his dad...he is a childhood hero of mine...always wore #8 like him.

He will get his shot. He just has too many people ahead of him right now.

He probably should have gone the Dantzler, Vergason, Saiko route and went to a CC/JC for a bit then transferred here.

Re: Ryan Ripken

I wouldn't go as far as saying he won't be like his dad. Granted his dad is iron man. The coaching staff will work with him and he'll get his shot. He'll be fine.

nothing wrong with a redshirt year
with some seasoning he may develop into a good player for us

Re: Ryan Ripken

Many of the players we sign don't make the team their first year. I think Ripken came in with unfair expectations because of his last name.

Not saying he won't...I hope ur right...I was just saying this far...it's lookin like he won't...I hope he is one of the best to ever play here and hope he is better than his dad...that would be awesome!

No shame in a RS. Our roster is not too easy to make.

Re: Ryan Ripken

I'm sure he'll be fine. I like his dad and all but that doesn't matter. We're the #1 program in the nation. We've either been in 1st or 2nd place the past 3 years and our recruiting has been on point for years before that even. Just making the roster is hard enough, let alone actually getting to play.

With a RS he'll get some more time to develop and that will be a win win for everyone.

Re: Ryan Ripken

Proof name and who you are doesn't get you on this team...it is what you can do.

Plus, I think a RS would help him gain weight, put on some strength...plus he has some quality guys ahead of him that can play first in Dantzler, Martin and Celek.

I know what you're saying GI&RI. I agree with hoping he is one of the best ever at SC and as for being better thsn his dad Cal...well I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Wow, maybe you should give the kid a few years to develop before passing judgement on his entire baseball career.

Red shirt years are really beneficial to most kids. He learns the system and can develop his abilities. This is a great baseball school. That is why he is here.

Red shirt is nothing to be ashamed of especially because of the talent this team has.

Re: Ryan Ripken

Since when does being a redshirt on a team with the ability to pick and choose talent year after year mean a bad thing?

Wow...maybe u should read a few posts up where I explained I am not passing judgement...I am simply saying "looking like" as of right now that he isn't gonna be as good as his dad...not saying he won't be. As I explained above...his dad is a childhood hero of mine but I would love nothing more than for his son to have a great career here then go on to be better than his dad

Re: Ryan Ripken

He came in with way too much on his shoulders. The problem is that the fan base saw his name and didnt bother to look at the player himself. He didnt sign with us, he was a walk-on. Most people in the know believe that it wont be until his RS junior year before he contributes, if he contriubtes at all. Again, all the hype came from his family line.

It is becoming a stigma because of what you just said. The best programs get the best players, players that will likely only be with the program for three years. Every year, more talent like that is brought in. Usually, people who needed RS were not ready for college ball, meaning they have some catching up to do. That is why you rarely see a RS baseball player doing something on the field, they are usually passed over and weeded out.
