FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
http://www.mrsec.com/2013/03/fsu-a-d...c/#more-267737
"Yesterday, FSU athletic director Randy Spetman talked rather openly about the future with ESPN’s “Nole Nation” website. Certainly he was more open than he or most other ADs have chosen to be in the past. “It’s not done,” Spetman said regarding realignment. “I watch it every day, reading something about it every day, trying to get a sense and calling my counterparts and seeing where they’re really at.” He also said that FSU brass have “had conversations at the senior level about what we should consider.” He added: “There will be more of those conversations — they’ll continue. It’s an evolution every day." He mentioned joining the SEC saying: “Unless you bring in a revenue for them so that they don’t reduce their conference distribution to themselves, they aren’t going to bring you in. That’s what I don’t think people evaluate as much. It would be great to be in the SEC with our radius of schools and the way our fans travel and their fans travel, but if they bring Florida State into the SEC, I’m trying to see, how do we sell that we bring them enough additional revenue that we pay for ourselves and they make more money off of us? They have Florida just two hours away that has the TV market here.” |

Melt down on TigerNet in 3...2...1...
1) FSU is leaving! We can rule the ACC! 2) We must leave the ACC. We have to be in the SEC to be taken seriously. 3) SC won't ever let us in the SEC. Wash, rinse, repeat. |
Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
I think it's interesting that FSU basically admitted it would like to be in the SEC.

I can't see any way that we let the taters join the SEC, why should we ever do anything for those back stabbers...

Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
I doubt they would since the SEC already have Florida, which is not too far from FSU.
Don't want to start a debate, but if they SEC expands again, I think they will go to a new market. |

Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
This comes up every time there is a Clemson, Georgia Tech, FSU...isn't there an agreement by SC, UGA, or UF to vote to keep their respective in-state rivals out of the SEC in the event that they attempt to enter?

Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
the perception of who the sec will accept may be a bit off. If the sec doesnt want teams that wont bring in additional money such as clemson, fsu, or ga tech, i wonder why fsu was extended an invite back in 91'?
it seems to be known that fsu and clemson are not ever getting in. i wouldnt be surprised if they were extended an invite. of course, i wouldnt be surprised if they werent. |
Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
If FSU doesn't think they have enough to bring to the SEC, do the taters really believe that they do. There aren't enough toothless tater bastards in the whole southeast to make the SEC any money. Tell them to head about 1,500 miles west.

Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
Maybe they could get a coalition of original farming schools like the taters, VPI, NcSt, and Fla St to join up.....everybody could get a degree in crop rotation.

Pretty sure FSU did get an invite and passed. |
Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
Well with all of the recent success in football and revenue, I'm glad that SC isn't in the ACC. In 2015 when all of the facility upgrades are complete, It will be one of the best looking campuses, if not the best looking, in the SEC.

quote] FSU was courted back in the late 80's because the SEC was expanding to put in a championship game. The idea of adding states to add to a TV contract had not taken root yet. The idea of adding a championship game resulted in heated phone calls from the NCAA to the SEC, but the rule was in there. TV contracts are now driving expansion, which wasn't considered as much back then. |
Re: FSU AD Talks Openly About Switching Conferences
Doesn't the SEC really want to break into the NC television market? Duke or UNC would bring some consistentancy to SEC basketball and help the conference rule everything.
(And, it would help me not to feel so dirty when I pull for an ACC team during basketball. I <3 Blue Devil basketball.) |
