Why a Two-Quarterback System Will Work at South Carolina

Why a Two-Quarterback System Will Work at South Carolina

As the old saying goes, "if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks."

Unless you're Steve Spurrier.

The Head Ball Coach made a habit of playing musical quarterbacks during an incredible 12-year run from 1990-2001 at Florida that saw his teams win six SEC championships and the 1996 National Championship.

Not bad.

I think it was Garcia that smelley shared snaps with though wasn't it?

Smelley and Garcia rotated every play for two games. We beat Bobby Petrino's Arkansas team at home and got annihilated against Tim Tebow in the Swamp the week after. Smelley then played the entire Clemson game in Death Valley and the Garcia played the entire Outback Bowl against Iowa. Spurrier thought about quitting after that game but then hired GA Mangus to coach QBs and its been better ever since.

i think it wont be a problem as long as using two quarterbacks doesnt make us more apt to completely ignore the run.

Not only that but the addition of the class of 2009 (Holloman,Gilmore,Jeffery,Swearinger, etc) had to help lol.

Man, that was painful to watch.

11:00 a.m.

Garcia was hung over from the night before (and it showed).

Shonn Greene plowed right through the defense all game.

ESPN kept showing Sir Big Spur pecking itself in a mirror.

Not that it matters, but Garcia actually was benched at halftime at the Outback Bowl and Smelley played the 2nd half.

Whew.. I had almost put the game out of my memory. That was just one terrible performance. I literally questioned whether he threw the game on purpose, but then calmed down.

hahah terrible day. I believe that was the year Spurrier said he questioned whether he should really still be coaching after the season. Loss to Vanderbilt in week 2. Lose a close one 14-7 to UGA the next week. We get by Wofford by 10 points. Beat UAB by 13 points. Beat Ole Miss and Kentucky by just a touchdown. Lose another close one by a touchdown at home to LSU.

Then convincing wins over Tennessee and Arkansas but Florida takes it to us 56-6 and Clemson beats us 31-14. What's crazy is in 2008 and 2009 I'm thinking "we're so close!" because we had a chance to win a few of those games against UGA (2008,2009), LSU (2008), Alabama (2009), Florida (2009) and we beat ourselves. Is it safe to say the chicken curse is officially over?? If you believe it ever existed that is.

An iconic event in Gamecock football history.
While SOS didn't quit, Chris Smelley did. I will always believe Chris would have done noticeably better with different coaching.
Would have loved to have seen what Blake or Chris looked like playing for G.A.
