"Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
I put "realistic" in quotation marks in the title because usually asking posters to be realistic would mean asking them to slightly temper their expectations. And this is kind of what I am asking, but the thing about Clowney is that it just isn't that out of the question for some to think he has no ceiling.
So with that said, what is your "realistic" expectation of how Clowney will be remembered after his junior season barring a serious injury? 1. He makes All-SEC and has a very good year by most people's standards, but doesn't do much to enshrine himself as a "legend." Maybe think of Melvin Ingram's senior season as a comparison. Great year that gets hims plenty of props, but not in serious Heisman Contention, etc. 2. He builds slightly on what we saw this year and he once again is 1st team All-American. Maybe finishes in top 3 for Heisman and wins several defensive player of the year awards. 1st or 2nd overall pick in the draft and people are talking about him. For this example, lets say similar to Ndamukong Suh at Nebraska. GREAT player, but pretty similar to the other GREAT players that go 1st or 2nd in the draft each year. 3. Clowney takes it to a whole new level and seriously re-defines EXCELLENCE on the defensive side of the ball. For this example, think Lebron James as a college football player. Clowney ends the season being talked about as the greatest player to ever play the college game. |

Somewhere between 2 and 3, closer to 3.

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
I would say scenario 2.
I don't think it's ever realistic to expect someone to be talked about as the greatest ever and redefining excellence. That's an enormous task that has to be earned during the year with hard work, not just expect it to happen. Now, I'm not saying Clowney can't achieve that - I hope he does - I just think it's unfair and unrealistic to place that on him. |

well they say that clowney is working harder than ever and he is really pushing himself

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
Clowney is going to get beat on worse than Shaq did his jumior year at LSU. Teams are going to scheme away from him, and double and triple team him. If he has the same great year he had this year it will be enough to earn him millions. But I really feel like he will step his game up to another level and be a dominant player.

there are 10 other players on the defense, you can only pay so much attention to 1 guy. |
Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
i think he will do scenario 2

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
Based on probabilities, he won't win the heisman. Will likely be in top three since already getting so much love. I have no idea about stats.
Realistically, I just hope his conditioning gets better and whatever switch he flips on during certain plays gets flipped a little more often. |

Week 2 will set the tone for the season.

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
I'm not sure I would use "realistic" and Clowney in the same sentence. Most of us have seen him do things that move us toward unreal thinking or disbelief. As hard as it is to predict - especially about the future, I can comfortably see 2 or 3 defensive touchdowns scored, maybe 5 -7 forced fumbles, 14+ sacks with another 4+ sack game, 20+ tackles for loss, and maybe 1 or 2 interceptions. An intercepted handoff seems feasible if you watched "the hit" play closely. I also wouldn't be surprised with a good amount of second half time on the bench in games that are comfortably in-hand.

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
1. Breaks sack record for season.
2. 1st team all American, all SEC 3. First pick in the NFL draft. Heisman would be great, but a little unrealistic. |
Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
He will kill somebody on the field.

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
Because of all the hype surrounding him he could win the heisman with the same stats as last year. If we give him the ball in a couple goal line situations, will win it handily.

Re: "Realistic" expectations for Clowney this season..
I agree with giving him the ball on the goal line.
Can anyone remember a player getting so much national love without ever scoring a touchdown? That's impressive. Once he does, the lids going to blow off this thing. |
