Getting Burned in the Deep Zone
I've noticed that when we stop bringing a pass rush and we're in a deep zone, the secondary doesn't understand their zone assignments.
With any deep zone/prevent D the QB often has plenty of time to sit and wait for a man to come open and deliver a strike. But, with our inexperience in the Secondary this is exaggerated.
It is not enough to bring 4 and drop 7 into coverage, the unit has not gelled enough to hold coverage long enough for the 4 pass rushers to get to the QB.
Against UCF both of their 2nd half long balls we against a deep zone/prevent D alignment. While UK didn't necessarily have the big plays, they certainly were able to move the ball more efficiently when we move to more conservative play calling on defense.
Our strength is DL. Enhance that by bringing extra guys in the pass rush and hoping the coverage can hold just long enough to disrupt the passer. With a weak secondary the only other way to limit the pass game is by getting after the QB on every down.
Just how I see it right now. Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. But moving to more conservative play calling on defense isn't working in the second half. Get on the gas and stay on it until the game is over.
