OMG- Beat Tennessee, and USC may have been in the Nat'l Championship

Want to get even sicker by the UT loss? Had USC beaten them, they probably would still be the highest rated 1 loss team. Maybe behind Bama or Auburn, but not Missouri (currently 5th). And, we'd be playing Auburn, who is 4th. Our BCS numbers, if we beat Auburn, would have wins over the 4th and 5th ranked team, a top 15 Clemson team, a top 15 UCF team. 4 wins over top 15 teams just MIGHT have been enough in the computers to jump Ohio State at #2.

A 1 loss South Carolina SEC champion with 4 wins over top 15 teams? Probably would. And many are saying that Michigan State WILL beat Ohio State, as MSU is the only top 15 OSU has faced....IN TWO YEARS!!

Makes me sick. That long ass pass that our DB had his hand on, on 3rd down, which led to the FG. THAT play may have cost us a shot at FSU for the Nat'l title.

That said...remember 1997? That was Peyton Manning's last year. UT's best QB ever. Everyone thought THAT was their year, but, he and UT dropped a game they shouldn't have.

In 1998, Manning's replacement won a NC at Tennessee.

This year, we lose our best QB ever. Next year? We return a TON of players, a great group of WR's, the best RB in the SEC, a very talented, huge offensive line. All our LB's are young and coming back, and they are playing well right now. DB's? We always seem to replace them, and they're young now too. DL? We are becoming "DL U" we've turned out so many good ones.

UGA will be down a bit. Florida too. Missouri loses a ton of key seniors. Bama and LSU lose a lot. Texas A&M loses Manziel.

Who knows. 2014 just might be our year to finally win the SEC...and maybe more.

I think it is SEC or bust next season.
With a new QB at UGA...no telling what is going on at UF...UT will replace its whole oline and most of its defense with questions at QB...Kentucky will still be bad...Vandy will be Vandy...Mizzou has a lot of seniors and draft eligible juniors.

Everything lines up for us again...just can't screw it up like we have the past three seasons.

^rooster-the only problem is that this year's schedule was about as easy as it gets. next years we draw some tough teams like a&m and auburn not to mention we must replace our best offensive and defensive player

People need to stop dwelling on "what could have been". Do you realize
how many teams ranked in the top 25 can sit around each year and
say "What if" ? ... It's football. It's part of the game. IT'S GOING TO
HAPPEN. You either do it when it's there to do, or you lose. When you lose,
you except it and move on. What iffing and continued bitching and
griping about losing to UT isn't going to change the outcome. Do like our
team has done .... Get Over It and move forward.

Folks, 10-2 with the youth we had is nothing to be upset about. Sure, we lost that game to Tennessee. But good grief. We had a darn good year.

Spurrier refused to take Connor out and let Dylan give it a try vs Tenn and Georgia. It cost him an SEC East title.

And it's not finished yet either.
All freshman linebackers, couple of first year starters in the secondary,
a poor showing in our special teams play all year (save Frye's performance),
A new starting RB, No go to WR to speak of and yet we went down to
the last day of the year with a chance to play for the SEC Title.

I could dwell on the UT game all year and be miserable too if I chose to
be, but do you people constantly bringing up the loss to UT realize we
also lost to UGA ? ... We could have sustained the blow at UT had we
beat a beatable Georgia team.

I don't look at it from a standpoint of What if we had beaten UT.
I chose to look at it from a standpoint of "I wonder how in the heck we
won 10 games at all. .... IMO, this team overachieved this year based on
our make up. IMO, Steve Spurrier and our staff may have just pulled off
the best coaching performance of their entire careers by winning 10 game
with the team.

Everything really doesn't line up though....we have a much tougher schedule next year with many key games on the road (Aub, Fla, Clem) with absolutely no experience at CB. Our secondary, which was a patchwork this year, retains nothing for next year. Our senior qb is gone, and while you may be quick to annoint DT, go back and take a look at that Mizzou game sans Shaw. It was a wreck.

And couple that with the losses on the defensive line, and it could be a tough year next year.

Good point. It's hard to think about it from anyone's point of view but your own, but a lot of fans wonder what could have been if the result of one game played out differently for them. It seems like every season Oregon is one game away from playing for the MNC. That feeling isn't unique to South Carolina. However it is a shared feeling of good programs. If you've just missed out on playing for a few championships recently then congratulations, you are a good program now.

My thing is you need to consistently be in a position to do big things. It's going to happen for you if you consistently put yourself in that position. Keep the 9, 10, and 11 win seasons coming and it's going to happen eventually.

You have to not only be good, you need luck or little "miracles" to be a champions. We are a good team, even by SEC standards. Good enough to be champions, we just did have enough of the luck or miracles the last three years to make it the SECCG.

Can't you offer a better rebuttal than that? Do you want an All Homer forum? Can you not take criticism? A good Gamecock fan is typically an intelligent, thoughtful observer capable of seeing both the good and the bad. It is this quality that has gotten USC to where it is. We didn't get to where we are now by liking 6-6-0 seasons as long as we received a bowl offer.

Re: OMG- Beat Tennessee, and USC may have been in the Nat'l Championship

Guys, you got me wrong. I'm saying "what if", yes. But not dwelling on it. I'm saying, look how close we were to getting it done this year. And we only lose 4 seniors, and a few draft guys. The DL is the biggest area hit aside from QB. But, we are the new DL-U. We churn them out rapid fire now. Cliff Matthews. Eric Norwood. Devin Taylor. Melvin Ingram. Clowney. Quarrels. There are more that I didn't mention who are in the NFL now too. We'll replace the DL just fine.

We bring back almost the whole team, except the DL and QB, and can replace the DL I think.

QB? We have some good ones on the roster. Replacing the best QB in USC history will be hard.

BUT...my point was....Tennessee lost Manning in 97, and won the SEC and NC in 98.

Bama won it's first NC in 15 years in 09, and everyone wondered how they'd replace Greg McElroy. And now look at them 2 more NC's later.

I'm saying...the FUTURE IS BRIGHT!!! Shaw is leaving such a legacy and standard for ALL future USC QB's. Mediocrity at the QB position is no longer accepted, thanks to Shaw.

USC has new, higher standards, and we return so much.

Good times ahead!! That's the point.

You do realize the secondary includes the safeties who we return everyone on the 2 deep as well as the 2 deep for Spur so our secondary retains Williams, Elder, Gurley, and Marcus as well as Golightly returning with McWilliams and Christian getting experience this year, the statement our secondary retains nothing is far from true. The DL brings back a ton of talent in the Dixon brothers, Surrat, English, Griffith, Dukes, Harris, Green, some stud recruits and RS FR Washington and Turner will give us plenty of talent and depth. We should have depth at all positions except CB that we will cross our fingers in anticipation of Green and Smith for signing day. Having experienced LB's and Safeties create a security blanket and field generals for the rest of the defense IMO that is hard to quantify and aids inexperienced Dlinemen and CB's early with the ability to blitz in a multitude of ways without killing ourselves for huge yardage plays IMO

If "if's and but's were candy and nuts" LOL. Tennessee took it to us and beat us. We didn't get the job done, they did, and that's all there is to it.

We were close, and it hurts, but no sense in dwelling on what could have been.

Don't we still have Ronnie Martin at CB next year? Hear he is star potential, just needed some game experience.
