USC Final SEC Stats for 2013

Didn't see this posted yet - pretty telling that D was again the strength of the team. No Offensive player or stat was in the Top 3 of the conf but we were in the top half in most. Rush D and Pass D were better than I thought. O still struggles some as compared to the rest of the conf. STs were the most glaring aside from the lone bright spot in Fry.
Top 3:
Scoring Defense 2nd
Rushing Defense 2nd
Total Defense 3rd
Turnover Margin 2nd (+11) WOW!
Opponents 1st Downs 3rd
Fourth Down Conversions 2nd

Individually: E Fry 2nd in FGs (15-18)
K Quarles 2nd in Sacks (10)
K Quarles 2nd in TFL (14)

Honorable Mention: P Cooper was 6th in conf in kick return avg. Not bad for a bad ST unit overall.

mike davis finished 2nd overall in yards from scrimmage and 2nd in yards from scrimmage per game. he would have led the latter easily, but those last 6 quarters killed his average.

The Clemson game DID give us a big boost in the final Turnover Margin
Stat, HOWEVER...you can not deny that the Gamecocks Defense got
Stronger from about mid point in the season on (started with the Arkansas
game). To prove how strong this entire team (especially the defense) got
later in the season

Final Four Games: 0 Turnovers by our offense and 15 takeaways by our
defense ...... WOW !

Great point. D looked like a weakness early on but resulted once again as the strength of this team. Very optimistic about P Cooper for next year though.

Not saying that our D was not good, but you have to remember that we:

1.) Did not play Auburn-See Missou stats before and after SECC
2.) Did not play Texas A&M
3.) Did not play ALA
4.) Did not play LSU
5.) We did play KY, ARK, FLA, Miss St, TEN, VAN, not great to terrible offenses

Our schedule had a lot to do with those numbers.

We played Georgia when they were healthy, we played Clemson, and Mizzou. All really good offenses.

We also had the easiest schedule in the SEC. You have to take the statistics with a grain of salt. However, it is encouraging, coming up on our bowl game, that our rushing defense was ranked so highly in the SEC. Hopefully, the D will demonstrate why against Wisconsin.

You take care of business of the people on your schedule.

Agreed. It is one of our two major flaws with the team.... The other being
poor Special teams as a whole (save the FG team). I attribute the poor run
defense mainly to our youth at the Linebacker position as well as the
inexperience (overall) in the secondary. We got better in the fundamentals
at Linebacker and our young / inexperienced DBs actually did well against
the pass and were solid in most of the fundamental play, but the youth lacked
a lot in tackling skills up front, and tackling and run support from the
secondary.

If the game with Wisconsin was this weekend, I'd say we were in trouble and
I'd be scared about the outcome...... HOWEVER, Whammy took over the DC
job (The job and not just the title) at the end of the 2011 season, and what
gives me a good feeling about the Bowl game this year is in seeing what we
did against Nebraska and for the most part against Michigan's ground game
the past two years when Whammy had almost a month to prep for the game.

We were not good against good running teams in 2011, and played AWFUL
against teams that year that ran some kind of option (Navy, Auburn and
Wofford), yet we played exceptionally well against Nebraska's option offense
with a good running QB in Martinez that year. ... Same kind of thing last
year with the Wildcat ground game that Mich brought, as well as their normal
ground game with (other QB who's name I forget) running the offense.

I think we'll spend a lot of the next month practicing against the run, and
working on improving fundamentals and I think we'll go into the game with a
solid defense and play well. ... Doesn't assure us of the win, but I'm confident
we'll defend well and play well overall. It has been our M.O. The past couple
of years in the post season.

Err, Spurt. We were second in the league in run defense. My quote was not serious as the stats clearly prove that we are not weak against the run. Or maybe the SEC was just REALLY weak against the run.

Wisconsin will be a whole 'nother level though.

But we played Clemson, UNC and UCF who had excellent offenses. Vandy and Miss State did move the ball on some folks.
